My mk5 GTI with blizzaks just destroyed 6in of unplowed snow. I actually couldn't loose control. Even pulling the e brake for a donut at 25 mph was difficult to loose traction. Its all about the tires and the GTI uses them well.

Can confirm that driving in Massachusetts with a rear wheel drive car is tricky. I have an e46 330ci with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 all seasons on right now and it's so tail happy when taking turns. Thankfully I'm working on getting snow tires soon. And hello from Worcester County, Eli!
@marcusdavila54377 жыл бұрын
I think all cars drive well in the snow as long as you have the proper tires.
@William9alex8 жыл бұрын
I live in Canada but the same could be said about the northern US: there's no such thing as "all-season" tires as you clearly found out the hard way. It's nothing but a money grabber for tire companies. It's impossible to make a tire for weather from +30C (~ 85F) to -30C (~ -20F). Don't waste your time with them. A good winter tire goes a long way. I have no trouble with my GTI in the snow, as a matter of fact I trailblaze the way on our street when the plow hadn't gone by.

New owner of 2010 GTI. This car is awesome! There was a small “hill” that a bunch of cars couldn’t make it up. I have nothing but all season tires and factory traction control. There were people outside warning drivers that cars weren’t making it up. In fact, there was a guy with a truck and tow strap. I wonder if he was charging drivers…hell, I would.

What's up dude, thanks for telling me where manual was. I've been reading it inside & out and I came across a bit of information about driving in snow... in the Booklet 3.2 Tips & Advice on page 8 (Smart Technology) it says " You should generally leave the ESP on at all times. In certain circumstances where you need less traction you can switch off the ESP... for example when driving 'with snow chains, when driving in deep snow' or on the loose surfaces, when rocking the vehicle when you are stuck" not sure if you knew this
@IgnitionTube8 жыл бұрын

What size wheels are you running? What size tires? VW is recommending taking the 18" Bathhurst wheels off of son's 2014 GLI (same driveline as GTI) and using a 16x6.5 steel rim with a 205/55r tire (to replicate circumference). What are you running? You didn't mention that in your otherwise great clip. Thanks!

Great video! was planning on just leaving my tires, which are all seasons, but now i think ill have to bite the bullet and buy some winter tires. And here in south dakota in the frozen tundra i think ill need them lol
@finnishfatman3 жыл бұрын
Short answer: Yes. Longer: Yes, but only if you have good set of proper winter tires :P Anything's good in snow with those (except certain RWD things, like mercedes... they just suck compared). FWD is always better in snow than RWD. Sure, some teenagers think RWD is more fun, because they can "drift" and whatever... man, just get enough powerful car and you can do that during summer too :P Anyhow, it's a FWD so it's good, but like you said in the video, proper winter tires are a must for snow. All season (or in trucks all terrain) just suck so badly when you put them against real winter tires. Now, I own mk5 GTI and do I drive it when it's knee deep snow? Nah, I'll hop into my Jeep Grand Cherokee WK and roar that 5.7 hemi through all that snow without even spinning a tire :D

My state is due for some snow soon. Does it make a difference if I put something heavy in the trunk? I don't want my rear to break loose when I make a turn. I drive a '16 GTI BTW!
@asianguitarmasta7 жыл бұрын
I liked in Anchorage, AK for 3 years and made it through Snowpocalypse. I drive a MKIV GTI that's a little lowered. I had A/S tires my first winter and I got stuck and couldn't get traction. I bought Bridgeston Blizzaks for the next year and my car was like a little German tank. I had zero issues with traction or getting stuck. Tires make all the difference in the world. Don't buy studs. Winter tires are where it's at.
