Great video , I have had my 2017 GTI s 6 speed manual for about 11 months now and love it. I was worried about VW reliability ,since I have only owned Japanese cars before. But I have read they are getting better and better. I hope have good luck . Looking forward to more videos .

I’ve had a tough decision to make. GTI is my absolute dream car, always wanted one. But, since I do travel up to New Hampshire from Massachusetts for the Holidays, I was really worried about the terrible snowy conditions NH gets. This video helped a lot with deciding wether or not to get an GTI or not.

Hello from Canada! Great informative video that helped me arrive at the decision to pick up a GTI myself considering we have very similar winters to you. I have a set of Blizzaks too and was wondering are those 18" wheels in your winter setup?
@CarsandComments
@CarsandComments 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks David! Really glad to hear the video was helpful in your decision making process. We run 17 inch rims for our blizzaks which is the smallest rim Tire Rack offers for a winter setup. The extra sidewall really helps when the conditions get slick but the car should also perform excellent on the 18" rims. Enjoy your new GTI they are lots of fun and thanks again for there comment!

Oil changes not only increases longevity, but profitability of your local dealer. Stay with what VW recommends. I also run my MK VII autobahn on WS80, they're excellent on the snow, but suck on dry and wet braking. Considering performance Winter Tires. You should consider rally school such Team O'Neil or Rally Ready, they truly change my snow driving, you won't need to pull your hand brake for your slides, you can achieve the same with left foot braking, but a lot more controlled.

@@CarsandComments Do you still drive the GTI? One thing it annoys me, it's it will cut power completely if you LFB while on the gas. I learn to over come that keeping minimal pressure on the brake before the pressing the throttle and keep driving. it gets tricky but works. I'm considering APR tune that deletes that safety feature. Yeah, I also did Team O Neil 5 days and latetly, took a private lesson at Rally Ready, loved them both! completely different experiences, with slightly different techniques but complement each other.

I'm considering the new Jetta, drove it and it's so nice and smooth.. Thoughts? Have the ultimate appliance on wheels a Camry..Boring! lol.... But hey never breaks! I will wait for a certified used new Jetta, may hold off till 2020 model....So what do you think of it? thanks

Last Jetta I drove was a 2015 TDI, (which was really good) unfortunately haven’t been in the latest one. The GLI would be the most fun but generally even the base Volkswagens are pretty fun. They have good a chassis and especially compared to your camary will be lots of fun. I would definitely shoot for the GLI if you could though, its definitely worth it.

So im moving to alaska soon. Love the mk7 GTi(platform and new engine). But do i need the subbieWrx? Or you think the GTi FWD will do fine? Im a big fan of VW(VAG) or euro cars mostly. I really dont want to get wrx if the GTi can handle alaska winter just fine with snow/winter tires. I was also looking at old mk6 R. But mk7 is really lovely to have.

I bet with a good set of snow tires like Bridgestone blizzaks or Nokian hakkapelitas (which I have on my Fiesta ST and I slightly prefer over blizzaks) it should be a pretty good snow car. Unless you have to drive through through a foot of super heavy wet snow every day, front wheel drive with the correct rubber will get the job done. If you prefer the GTI, I’d get that and some good snow tires. I’ve been through some pretty gnarly snow storms in 2wd cars with snow tires and been really impressed with their capabilities. Thanks for watching and commenting and good luck with your move to Alaska!

I've been looking at MK7 GTI's. I'm gonna have to be commuting in and around Boston. Think I'll be fine with snow tires or should I be looking at Impreza's? Also....the 2015ish TDI's look awesome in white and 45 mpg on the highway...

With a good set of snows it will be a really good winter warrior. I’m in southern New Hampshire so I deal with very similar conditions. An Impreza will certainly be better with the same tires but I prefer the GTI overall and it’s still a very capable snow car. TDIs are really cool and lots of fun and definitely worth considering. Nice video! Could you tell me a little bit more about how the car is with traction control off? I have a 2014 Jetta 1.8T 5 speed and I put Michelin X ice snow tires on for Michigan winters. What really makes me mad about the Jetta is there is no traction disable feature which gets annoying when trying to pull out in traffic in winter or out of a snowy parking lot. My sisters MKV Jetta has a traction control button, however even when ESP is off it still limits the car- I.e. not a full defeat. Is the GTI traction control a full defeat? Or does it still limit wheel slip to some degree?
@CarsandComments
@CarsandComments 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Glad you enjoyed the video! If you press the traction control button once it will let the wheels spin but won’t allow the car to slide. If you press and hold for a few seconds it shuts off both traction and stability control...mostly. It’ll let you slide quite a bit but if you go full gymkanah it will cut In and try to pull the car back in line. Thanks for commenting and let me know if you have any more questions.

hey man, i have a golf 7, gtd though, i've bought these bridgestone blizzak tires thinking they do a good job. well, my car can't handle half the snow in your video. they are inflated to recommended psi 2.4. should i lower to 2? what's your tire pressure? right now i'm slipping in all turns when going uphill, even at low speed. i think the problem is the car has too much power and even if i'm slowly hitting the gas, ice and snow can't handle it

How do you get the back of the car to come out
@CarsandComments
@CarsandComments 5 жыл бұрын
E Brake mostly but a better and faster way is to lift off the gas, turn, then brake. That gets all the weight transferred on the front wheels and off the rear wheels causing oversteer. Attempt this in a snowy parking lot first to get a feel for it.

We seem to get pretty consistent mileage year round. Depending on how we drive it we get around 30mpg give or take. In the winter typically around 27, 28 mpg. In the summer pretty close to 30 exactly. Thanks for your comment!

Volkswagen dealer tells customers that 5k oil changes are better even though the Volkswagen manual says 10k, and oil manufacturers have improved oil to 10k. It's not the motors it's the oil that is better, castrol has a 20k oil now. That dealership is a pack of wolves

solen 1 We take our car to an independent VW shop who has been around for a long time and has a good reputation. We were also skeptical but supposedly they see much better longevity out cars they change oil every 5,000 miles. We’ll see how the car fairs in the long haul. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have been a vw mechanic for over 20 years. I have done many oil analysis on used oil. On my own GLI I am doing oil change at 3K now. Do an oil analysis and see the results at 10K. We see premature timing chain failure on almost all VW and audi when customer followed VW 10K oil changes. By the way no mechanic shop makes money on oil changes. It is waste of time when a mechanic can spend his time doing a timing belt or other bigger jobs rather than an oil change.
@solen1849
@solen1849 6 жыл бұрын
People who do 5k or even 3k il changes genuinely take care of their car better though. People who do oil change gea every 10 probably dont know or take care of it. Why would volkswagen recommend something that damages their engines? It does say change it earlier for stop and go and hard driving.
