My daughter is 20 months and has never had separation anxiety until recently...now all of a sudden she's starting to wake multiple times in the night (not every night). She naps every day for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Her speech is finally starting to develop as well on top of us just moving..so there's A LOT going on. I'm so glad to find videos like this to reassure me that what she's going through is totally normal so I'm not a basket case trying to figure out what's going on. Stay strong parents! We got this!

My 2 year old used to go to sleep just fine and slept through the night. These days he screams endlessly as soon as we put him to bed. Is this regression? How long will this last? It’s been about a week now.

Hello Marshall, This definitely sounds like the 2 year regression. Regressions can often last up to 2 weeks. The best thing you can do is be super consistent with your routines and timings because the regression WILL pass. Hang in there! Check out this guide for more helpful tips! Wooo this was so comforting to know that it is a phase, my son is a good sleeper but lately only bed time he doesn't want to sleep in bed, he screams you would think he has hurt himself. Once he is on my bed he is fine. So it will stop right? Thank you so much.

My 2 year old is screaming and jumping out of her cot at bedtimes. Can’t do anything to settle her. She wants me close by. Tried for 3 hours to get her back to sleep at 1am and it caused more screaming and jumping from the cot. She ended up in our bed. Do you have any advice please? We can’t leave her to cry it out as she jumps from the cot.
@Babysleepmadesimple

If she is climbing out of the cot it is probably time to transition to a toddler bed as it is no longer safe in the cot. Or you can try a method of sleep training her where you are present, like the chair method. Clare, BSMS Support Team

What if your little one was always the model sleeper. Right into her sack, a few songs and lights out. Now suddenly she started screaming at the top of her lungs, extremely distressed for bed time and waking up in the middle of the night and finally waking up at 5:30am. The only way to get her down is to either cuddle her for 30 mins in her chair or bring her to my bed. Sleep regression?
@Babysleepmadesimple

Hi, Sorry to hear! Yes, it could be the 2 year regression if your little one recently turned two. If it's been several weeks, though, it could be time for a sleep training "tune up"! This can be common as our babies turn into toddlers. My big kid sleep course includes advice for separating at bedtime, keeping your little one in their bed all night, stopping bedtime battles, get them waking later in the morning, effective calming strategies and lots more. You can find out more about it here: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/big-kid-sleep-training

Help! lol My daughter is 32 months BUT with her sleeping patters she always seemed a bit delayed. She recently just started having I'm guessing separation anxiety. We took away her pacifier 2 months ago and since then she'd ask for her paci or tell us it was missing and that was the end of it. Now as of 2 weeks she's been waking up in the middle of the night and cries to the top of her lungs and tries to hop over her crib not wanting me or my husband to let her go. Because she was attempting to hop over we changed her the crib to the convertible bed. And she didn't seem to mind the bed but same behavior. We'd do our routine and say night night and as soon as we closed the door the crying and walking to the door to bang on it and try to open begins. I admit I ended up staying next to her bed 1st night till she doze off luckily it was for a few mins since she skipped her nap but woke up again at 2am and I ended up sleeping on the floor next to her bed. Now Day 2 she immediately said mama night night she wants me to stay in her room sleeping with her. I did do that second night cause I am just so exhausted but still noticed she would wake up middle of the night crying. I did the shhh mom's here and she knocked out. On top of this the night light is introduced since she's never had one. I followed all your advice on sleeping training since she was 4 months and it's all worked. Just a new phase where I feel completely clueless since now she can move around if she's on a bed or try to hop over if she's on the crib. Don't know what to do. On another day we just left her bedroom door open and got the house dark hubby and I went to do our work since we work from home. She didn't nap she just sat on her crib occasionally calling out for me. She finally dozed off and I went in to lay her down and I said mama needs to go to work I'll be back and she was so tired she fell asleep door still left open but now it's been over an hour and 3pm and she's napping. Which will push her bedtime further out. Feel hopeless :(

My little girl is 20 months old and she’s transitioning to a big girl bed first few days were fine (btw she’s sleep trained and has been sleeping on her crib the whole night with no problem waking up at 8:00 o’clock) but now she’s waking up at 7:30 and waking up at night should I go back to the crib ? As I’m writing this is 2:08 o’clock and she fell asleep finally ..... is it a sleep regression or it’s just something else going on ! If so what should I do ?

Hello Jenn, Was your daughter trying to climb out of the crib? If she was, then for safety reasons we recommend moving into a toddler bed. But if she wasn't trying to climb out and was sleeping great, I would really recommend keeping her in the crib. Toddlers younger than 2.5 years old will sleep better with physical boundaries. Ideally, it's great to try and get our little ones to sleep in the crib until closer to 3. I am attaching our toddler bed article below! www.babysleepmadesimple.com/how-to-transition-toddler-from-crib-to-bed Let me know if you have any questions! Alyssa, BSMS Support Team

Hi D'yana, Separation anxiety can be SO challenging. The best thing you can do is try and spend lots of quality 1-1 time in the evening with your son and use lots of eye contact during the bedtime routine so he feels extra connection. He also is close to the 2 year sleep regression and this can disrupt sleep for 1-2 weeks. If he was previously falling asleep independently, but has just gotten sidetracked, definitely look into booking a private consultation with me. I would love to comb over his schedule and make some changes to help improve sleep. programs.babysleepmadesimple.com/30-minutes-private-consultation-checkout/ If he still needs to learn how to fall asleep independently, then definitely look into our sleep program! www.babysleepmadesimple.com/baby-sleep-consultant 2 YR SLEEP GUIDE: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/2-year-old-sleep-problems-solutions We hope we get the opportunity to help your family! I don't know what to believe about my 2.5yo son. He used to have a 30 mins nap at lunch and then 11 hours night sleep without waking up. But lately he talks more and takes a bit longer to go to bed, he asks for things like water, popo, car...and then he wakes up during the night, sometimes once, sometimes twice and very early in the morning, like 4.40 or 5 o'clock. It's exhausting for everyone. He wakes up screaming for me or for daddy, although im sleeping in the same room with him. Is it a 2 year old regression or a 3 year old one? Is it gonna get better cos it's lasting for a few month now. Thanks

Oh man not what you need when you have a newborn as well. Congratulations by the way. I assume your eldest is in a toddler bed if he is able to come into your bed. I have a 23 month old daughter who is definitely going through regression \seperation anxiety right now. It has been going on for a week or so and I just dont know what to do. I had her sleep trained and she napped and slept through the night like a champ until now. Every day, after I do our routine of readig a book and rockig her ursing her for 10 minutes and then laying her down in her crib, all she does is scream. I usually just ignore her (i know. Its terrible!) But she refuses to go to sleep. So most days since this started, she just doesnt nap. The only way she will is if I hold her the entire time or put her in my bed and lay beside her. But i know those are both bad habits and I dont want to continue that every day and conpletely ruin my hard work of sleep training her. What do i do?? Please help!!

So i told her im not going anywhere and then i tried laying in the floor next to the crib but she still just screams until i pick her up. 😭

@@marybrewer3824 I would talk to her during the day when she's awake and happy. EXPLAIN your expectations ("You'll go into your crib & cuddle your teddy & fall asleep there.") And also remind her that you're always nearby watching over her ("And mommy will sit next to your crib while you fall asleep.") Let her know what you expect of her, while also providing loving reassurance. You can hold her hand or stroke her hand through the crib bars while she learns to fall asleep in the crib again. Each few days you can move your chair a few feet away from the crib, toward the bedroom door. Toddlers need to know what's going on, communication is essential. And, of course, we parents have to stick to what we say. This method WILL work if you stay consistent. Good luck.

@@Babysleepmadesimple I have a very similar problem to this. My son is two next week and does not yet have alot of words. I'm confused by what you are saying here and buy your articles. I can talk to him about it during the day, and not take him out at night at all, but I have no idea how to calm him with out letting him out of the crib or room. He just cries. This morning I let him cry from 5am to 7am in his crib. I went in and told him to lay down, offered water, tried to hold his hand, rubbed his back...everything but take him out. But he just cried. He used to sleep 9-7:15 with out waking. Now its 10-5 if we are lucky. It's been over 2 weeks now, and it is really showing in his daytime mood. (And ours) Do I just keep doing these things until he sleeps until 7...even if he is crying the whole time?
