The NCLEX for me was the first moment in nursing school where the material was straightforward. It was all about safety and commonsense. Mine ended after 75 questions even though I had no idea how I was doing. I just shot from the hip and didn't overthink and it worked. I honestly feel that you do not learn how to be a nurse until you start working.

@@johnpuleo3176 I’m not really saying the test is bogus…just believe the test cannot be used to determine if you are/will become a good nurse. I think it’s purpose is to test knowledge of content but you truly don’t start understanding nursing practice until you get on the halls.

@@lisawright113 You're correct. You truly don't understand nursing and critical thinking until you are on the halls and years of experience. That's why the new test is a fraud. It's testing new graduates as if they already had a lot of experience. The new test is specifically and precisely designed to fail the majority under the false guise of protecting the public because too many new nurses are making mistakes. It sickens me to see them lying to all the nursing students in USA and watching the nursing students fall for their lies.

I have been preaching this for twenty years. I so hope the NCLEX is eliminated and teaching does change because it would be for the best. Every point made in this video about the test in relation to whether or not it makes the best nurse or not has been proven daily. I sincerely sometimes wonder though if this test simply isn’t eradicated because the BRN truly believes it works when clearly it doesn’t or if it’s just because the BRN gets money from all the test takers, regardless of how many times they repeat the test even though many students have already graduated, and performed clinical with passing scores, throughout nursing school. The NCLEX really needs to go. Skill based testing is where it’s at as far as I’m concerned. Many can pass a test and not get the content. I’ve met MANY too ashamed to tell others they didn’t pass the first time because they believe it reflects their skill as a nurse entirely! Meanwhile, some I’ve known didn’t pass the NCLEX many times but I’ve encountered to be the most amazing nurses by skill alone who merely experienced test anxiety, or weren’t comfortable with computers, or as the host said just got used to one way of testing only to be introduced to another!. If they ever create a bill to do away with the current NCLEX testing let me know. I’d be the first to sign it! Too many nurses I worked with passed, the first time, under 75 questions, and still had no idea what they were doing in actual practice. Smh.

This revised exam was created to test critical thinking skills due to a major concern from hospitals around the globe who stated when asked by ncsbn, what their main concern was with new RN graduates. As stated in the new NGN book, the majority of new grad nurses failed to critically think, thus causing more errors and lack of appropriate patient care. I purchased the new NGN book as soon as it was available. My nursing program is now integrating the new exam type questions, readying us for the exam. I gotta tell ya, I’m actually liking the new format v the old standard. I do poorly with multiple choice questions. But with the NGN format you’re given the complete chart - all the info to choose the correct answer once you break everything down and critically think about the disease process and nursing intervention. I’m excited about this change and welcome it.

@@lisastratton5145 Sorry. I take it back. I just get upset when people play the game and go along when critical thinking comes after years and years of experience. So, they're just making the exam harder and using " Words of Art" in order to make it sound nice. They don't need all these nurses so they're gutting the industry under the guise of making the test better because of critical thinking.

So far I have failed the NGN 3 times. I just paid for the 4th test after a breather and reset. I'm so burned out of this! I agree with you wholeheartedly. My state has a disclaimer that just because someone is licensed it doesn't make them competent. Say what?! Why are they even licensed, then? Because they passed a test? Here I am working over half a year now to pass an exam and I look at what some nurses do it sickens me. How are they graduating like this?

I thank the Sweet Lord Jesus Himself that i took the NCLEX yesterday!!! I am one of the last students to take the OLD GEN and sincerely feel for the students taking NEXT GEN. I had to do some NEXT GEN example questions at the end if my NCLEX and they are case study based and i do not have the patience to test in that manner…JUST WOW!! I wish everyone luck that will be taking NEXT GEN. There does need to be some competency standards and testing done to make sure basic care and safety can be provided. BTW, ATI is absolutely horrible!!!!!

Jon, you earned my respect. You are a leader with compassion, an advocate for hundreds of patients across this country. I agree that a single test can never determine a competent nurse. The FBI recent raid of multiple Florida schools for taking money from people to enrol them with the NCSBN for NCLEX examination with zero nursing and clinical knowledge was a taboo. Yet, thirty percent of those who sat for the exam passed. If competency is the sole determinant for the NCSBN set NCLEX exam, none of these people should have passed. Numbers of graduate nurses have given up their dream of becoming registered nurses because of this barrier. The exam should be evaluated to match the hard work of those taking it. I am not saying people pasing the exam are not hard working nurses, but test taking will never determine competency.
