In legends he is referenced as a "mere boy". In the movie, right after Nezhas birth and they find out he is born evil and must not be kept alive. The guy holding the banner saying "congratulations on your new son" suddenly takes out a new banner that says "deepest condolences". He is a boy. I thought he was a girl at first. It might just be a trend to bunch hair like that on young kids. (because during ancient china, they never cut their hair.)
