@@atlladyleo1 love the idea. But I'm very reluctant to loan physical books since the day my aunt literally trashed the brand new book she borrowed. Had just bought it at the airport on my way back home. Hadn't read it yet. But she was so persistent Ilet her take it. A month later, went to her house only to be told that the book was being passed along in the neighborhood and she'll send someone to get it. When I got it back it looked like something I picked up in the trash. It was so dirty and the pages were falling apart. Since that day I stopped buying books in French and now only read ebooks. I'm not sure I can loan my ebooks.

I appreciate how thorough you were in reviewing the journal, not only showing the pages but also filling in several of the spreads as though you had been using it, which uncovered some issues or little irritations that might not have been obvious otherwise! Not having rough room to write a title or author name, especially with my big handwriting, would drive me crazy, for example. Thanks for going the extra step there and giving us that additional information.

I don't necessarily love the emphasis on pictures in a reading journal? This feels unfortunately very aesthetic as opposed to functional, for my own purposes. Also don't love the fact it's an A5 - feels too small
@ErinSmith2 ай бұрын
My guess is they're trying to give journal users a chance to add some of the "mixed media" element - stickers and washi tapes or drawings etc. I approached it from the book covers perspective because that's what I do in my own journal, and I guess lots of others might do the same, but I get what you're saying - it could be much more approachable without those implied book cover spaces!

I would probably use the book log as my series in progress tracking. I list all the books in the series, check off the ones read and date completed. I also mark which books I have or if the book has been released for series still being published. That way I always know where I left off and what I can proceed with.

I like the idea of this, and its great for people with little time or who need some help/set structure to follow through, but gods that's EXPENSIVE. I already feel bad spending 30 bucks on an A&O notebook, and they have equally lovely covers nowadays... I prob wouldnt get something like this myself even if it was cheaper, too many layouts that are too specific that I wouldn't use (all of) them, would make me feel bad for wasting perfectly good notebook & paper. Not everyone has the same needs, and I feel some of this locks you into it a bit. I wouldn't need a quick review AND a more indepth one. I think releasing something like this as a mini layout reference guidebook would be pretty neat and more usable for a lot more people who do have the time to make their own tbh.

Thank you, I was wondering about this one. Looks good for beginners or anyone procrastinating on creating a reading journal. The aesthetic isn’t for me personally- I’m jarred by the disconnected fonts and frames. Sometimes it’s minimalist and sometimes flouncy. This is a pretty neat concept! But….considering the price range (which reasonable since Notebook Therapy is a well known brand but, the market for it is……more expensive than Amazon products or even Etsy products that are premade journals) along with the way the reading journal leans towards one type of aesthetic instead of being versatile for all styles, it might be a hit and miss for some people. Hopefully they can see any feedback and make more aesthetic styles and well……a bit more price friendly!

some thoughts: - the "favourite" thing DOES bothers me. which is funny cuz i don't mind things like "colour", its just favorite is such a long word already - the sans serif font is a bit too... simple? i keep expecting something a little more ornate. maybe a nice serif font would have worked better. they already have some sprinkled around the headings, i dunno why they didn't use it in the table of contents and page numbers - there's not a lot of places to actually write? sorry but when thinking about a book (which is already a text-based medium) i want to go on a tangent about it, not draw/print a bunch of pictures.

The fact that they give dedicated space at the end of the journal to sum up "stand alone, duology and series" but don't give you that prompt in any of the individual review pages is idiotic. Fun fact: The U in a lot of words in British English came out later, favorite being used before favourite and a lot of the words that use a U in the name (like Parlour, Colour, Favourite), the schism happens because America after independence kept using what it was using before, without the extra u and the British started adding the U

I agreed with a lot of the points you brought up. Especially the order of the spreads. I would prefer the static layouts to be in the front. Nor was I crazy about having two different review layouts. I think they could sell two versions of the journal: one with the quick reviews; and one long reviews. At 50+ dollars I would expect more. For example, the frames should be stickers you can place over the printed book covers if you want. Oh well, at least now I know there are pre-printed journals. Hopefuly I can find one that's more gender neutral, with layouts in an order I more confortable with. Thanks so much for all the effort you put into your videos. I am really enjoying them!

I think the ratings page didn't need a place at all for the title and author since it was clearly displaying the covers. They could have skipped the lines all together and fit another row of books on each page. Same with the quick reviews. If displaying a cover image why waste time and space having it written out by hand, too? They could have used that space to make the thoughts section bigger. Oh yeah, and please never apologize to Americans when 1 of the thousands of products on the market isn't catering to them. 😉 I despise that it's almost impossible to find a calendar/planner with holidays noted that AREN'T American.

The san serif font isn't fancy, sure, but I think it's supposed to be a nod towards dyslexic people. I imagine there are those who are dyslexic who have been wanting to get into a reading journal, trying to flex their wings, or primarily listen on audiobook, and sans serif fonts are friendlier for them.
@ErinSmith2 ай бұрын
That is a great point! Would the patterned page backgrounds make using this journal harder for dyslexic people?
@solitaireclub2 ай бұрын
@@ErinSmith I honestly don't know, what I know about dyslexia accommodations is minimal. I just noticed that there is at least one of the same title that's in the sans serif font on the table of contents page, and the main portions of the review pages that most people are likely to use are all in that same font. Everything else is decorative or in a header that is repeated on the table of contents in the sans serif font. I could be wrong but that was just how I saw it, considering how random it seemed at first.

The aesthetic is gorgeous, but this journal definetely lacks practicality, at least for me. In any case, pre-printed stuff never works for me.

What I want in a reading journal is one that doesn't have spaces for reviews,because that's not what I want to use the journal for...

I’m intrigued! What would be in your ideal reading journal?

I was expecting this notebook to be like $25-30 and I thought ok, thats a bit expensive, but it’s still okay… then I open the site and it’s $53??? Oh hell nah, no thanks. A notebook that expensive gives me anxiety. I’d feel pressured to be ‘perfect’ because of how expensive it is! Imma stick to making my own journals.

Yeah the price is very high now the intro sale has ended - it works out to $77.80 Australian. I’m glad they sent me one to review, I wouldn’t be buying it at that price!

@@ErinSmith exactly! Honestly your videos are already so helpful and has really helped me start out my own reading journal. They are more than enough. Definitely dont need to be spending money on sth this expensive!

It's funny you mention your book bracket as I copied yours, and it doesn't work lol. My daughter had to point the error out to me back in Feb. So I have ignored it xx

I’m committed to it, cause it’s kind of funny 🤣 but I don’t think I’ll include one next year!

Pretty sure that's meant to be a moth, not a butterfly. It is under the moon, so it's a nighttime creature. ;)

If we Americans are bothered by the odd extra "U" in words, we really need to get over ourselves. :p For some reason, I've always spelled "honour" with a U, anyway, ever since I was a kid. Not sure where that came from.
