We just spent 6 months in Nottingham and it was amazing, so much history and green spaces, including the Aboretum, Colwick Park and lakes and Wollaton Park with its Deers! Fantastic walks along the canals too and great pubs! Also great place for exploring the UK as right in the middle! 2 pound to go anywhere on the bus and trams that crisscross the city, looking forward to going back!! I would say very underrated!! Well worth a visit!!

We nearly didn’t go because google made it look like just a play park but glad we did. If you pay a visit there is a cafe and art gallery in the grounds too as well as crazy golf! Parking was a little on the sparse side though but the trams do stop nearby.

I was there a few weeks ago and enjoyed the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem. Prices were normal and they had a great selection of beer. I enjoyed my pint outside under the impressive English oaks. Food smelled good too. They also have a pretty cool canal museum and the downtown itself is nice to walk around. Definitely a small town though. Possibly a good base from which to explore the region. They do need to exploit the Robin Hood angle more.

@JJExtra

A bit of both really. We research places and things to do in the city and have a rough itinerary of the most important things we want to see or do but we are always flexible if we come across something unexpected and we like to walk wherever possible because that’s when we tend to stumble across hidden gems.

I love Nottingham, I've been going there since the 90's when they had a terrific rock / indie club night at Nottingham Rock City every Saturday! That club night is long gone but I still get to Rock City for a gig as often as I can (best live venue in the country imho!) and it's always a pleasure to revisit the city itself, certainly an under-rated place.

You kept walking right past places. You should've gone into Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem pub, because most of the rooms are caves under the castle. There's a very cool industrial museum in Wollaton Hall stables building. Can't believe you missed it. There's also the City of Caves tour (unsurprisingly in the City Centre), the Galleries of Justice, a number of cool pubs along the canal, Green's Mill - a working windmill and science centre not that far out of the centre, and a Hooters restaurant.
@mazjones1130

Nottingham born and bred here, you NEED to come back. There's so so so so so much more to see. The galleries of justice, the pitcher and piano. The official cave tour under the city. The old salutation inn, Snenton Market. All of this is within the city boundary. Also there's a tunnel that was built too small for coaches, a medieval stairway currently being restored, and if you are interested a ghost tour of the city where you explore more caves. Realistically you need more than a day here to truly experience this wonderful city

How good is Nottingham for a visitor ? After many years without any holidays, my wife and I (both in our 60s) had a short break to London in Nov 2022. We travelled by train from Newcastle and loved it, so much so, we have had several breaks since, to Edinburgh (twice) Glasgow, London again, Leeds, Manchester, York and Liverpool and we still have London and Glasgow again this year. I am thinking of somewhere new to visit, for late in the year, or even early 2025, hence the question. My wife likes the shops, while we both also enjoy seeing new places of interest, such as museums, cathedrals etc. Birmingham, Chester, Cardiff, Sheffield, Aberdeen, Inverness are other possibilities.

Nottingham lad myself been here 37 years its had good times however like most major cities in the UK today, it's got it bad side. Not to scare off tourist or potential people moving here, If visiting stay away from certain estates at night knife crime is a big problem here. On the upside first week in October there's The Goose Fair and All year round you have Wollaton Park Deer and all the outdoor goodness and Newstead Abbey plenty of other great places too.

wollerton hall? do you mean wollerton hall, pronounced wullerton? always fun to hear someone pronouncing the name of something they have no example to draw on :D nottingham is definitely completely underrated, but there was more to it a few years ago before everything started closing down. The castle isnt what you'd expect as the original castle was burned down in a tax revolt in the 1700s and rebuilt again in a more modern (for the time) form.

Nottinghamshire is pretty much in the middle. Hence, it's part of the East Midlands. There's a lot to see. Sizewise, from driving into the most southern part of the city to the Northern part of the County would be about an hour and a half so it's not massive but lots to see.

Just here to point out that Nottingham castle is not a castle, it's a 17th century ducal manor built by the then Duke of Newastle and his family on the site of old Nottingham castle that came down during the English civil war after standing proud for 500 or so years.
