It’s often been said that music is a universal language. So why was “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X initially removed from the country Billboard charts? Hallease and Evelyn use this hit record to talk about the business of music and how it has historically affected Black artists’ ability to“crossover”, stay true to their musical tastes, or experiment with the art form. #SayItLoudPBS #LilNasX #BlancoBrown

Understatement of the year. Classic country evolved from Bluegrass, with a hint of Irish Fiddle. And Bluegrass has always been about the Banjo. And guess where the Banjo came from? Africa. The core root of country is literally a west African instrument!

In many ways, Old Town Road is more authentic to the traditional sound, concept, style and composition of Country Music across most decades of country's existence. It's the homogenization, commodification and dare I say, sterilization of country music across the last 20 years that has caused this divide in the concept. Of course, all of this puts aside the fact that American music is African American Music, there is not the first without the latter. I am a huge Metalhead. I listen to Metal almost exclusively. And without Jazz and Blues being fused, there is no Metal. compositionally, Jazz and blues fusion makes up an easily arguable %75 of what makes Metal, Metal. smatter in some occasional concepts from classical music and Opera, And you've got it.

I have nothing against Zune users who enjoy their devices, seriously don't mind me! My gripe with the Zune largely had to do with it being a part of Microsoft's ambition back when it was launched. It was a part of them forcefully jamming their toes in the mobile phones & pocket media player market, with the creation of Windows Phones (both the phones and the OS), the Zune and the marketplace (their app store). The Zune in particular was meant to be a direct competition of Apple iPod AND their entire ecosystem, and the way they were headed (in order to make money) was to introduce an extremely incapable devices (willfully exclude commonly used app available out of the box with most other phones, the forced tile layout was annoying, very limited ability to customize anything, overall this expensive device had very limited functions, if you don't fork out money to buy apps. And the app store was abysmal, not to mention the OS was tricky to work with, app developers hated it) to trap users in the eco system the same way Apple does, while paying app developers and artists dirt, like Apple was already and are still doing. So a lot of us phone nerds resented Microsoft and the Zune 😂 there was a lot more details to it, I don't want to bore you, if you weren't obsessed with mobile devices 10+ Years ago you can still catch up and go back to read all the articles & the blogs, they're still there. Recalling all this is giving me whiplash 😩 my dyslexic self also hated the metro UI, there was no text box, every icon is forced to be in a tile that only comes in one color throughout the interface, the keyboard was a visual nightmare & typing was so unintuitive etc etc. And now that I've exposed my nerdy roots, I'll see myself out...

That isn't true. There was a saying, "All hat and no cattle." It referred to "fake" country artists produced by the music industry. Instead of white people sounding black, it referred to people sounding like they were from the South when many of them came from major cities outside the South and even from other countries. These singers would sing about experiences they never had while sounding more like rock artists than Hank Williams and Kenny Rogers.

I am so glad I watched this video. I do rideshare driving and the whole summer and, now the fall I’ve had conversations about this song and how, in their words, “it is definitely a country song“. I always find those conversations so annoying because they are always with people who never listen to country music. (I don’t listen to metal. My opinion on whether a song would or would not be metal isn’t relevant because I’m not familiar with the genre, for example.) Normally these conversations about old town Road are people who clearly aren’t familiar with country music and when they are referencing what country music sounds like or what the songs are about, I find that they seem to still think country music sounds like Hank Williams or Patsy Cline which hasn’t really been what country music sounded like for at least a quarter of a century. I really like this video because it sidesteps that entire issue by pointing out that a lot of these genre divisions aren’t really that meaningful. Is there really much of a difference between say Mumford & Sons and old-school country? Not really. Is there much of a difference between country and hip-hop both singing songs about flexing and girls they think are cute? Not really. There’s not that much of a difference between these two genres in many important ways. They may sound different but there are a lot of similarities. I like this video.
@TulilaSalome
@TulilaSalome 4 жыл бұрын
As a metal head, the genre policing annoys me also - metal is a very wide genre, if you can play it with cellos, why should there be some sort of fencing? There are always a few borderline 'is it hard rock - is it prog rock? Is it just weirdness?' bands but why should that matter? Listen to them, don't listen to them, as you like. Only use of genre labels is that it gives some indication on what it sounds like, if you haven't heard it before, and making it easier to find in your streaming service of choice: though that exactly makes it problematic - the song might not get to the people that would enjoy it, if it is arbitrarily classed on non-musical basis.

I am so glad that you guys mentioned one of my favorite bands, The Black Keys. Little known fact, they got their early blues sound from training under a black blues artist named Junior Kimbrough. The Black Keys had mastered his sound so well that I thought they were black when I had first heard them!

Thank you! This is just another thing I love about music. I didnt want pop rock to be a thing but it is. Someone made it, it sounded like pop and rock and bam, it existed now. Whether anyone likes it or not, if Lil Naz says it's a country song, and it sounds country, it's a country song! Love it

Your video programs are great! Great topic. You know, I found out back I’m the late 80,s reading a biography interview inside the Hank Williams Sr box set, that as a teenager he learned how to play guitar and write music from an older Black blues musician he sought out cause he wanted to learn the craft. It was cool to learn that!I still love older country music from the 30’s - 70’s as it’s still so funky and bluesy.

Fantastic, yall did your research tuff! Once I got over my "I cant like country music" phase, it opened me up to appreciating folk and blues as well. And then you realize what's considered country or not gets really gray... Tracy Chapman, Odetta, Leadbelly, Bo Diddley, or Chuck Berry just to name a few.

Old Town Road can be whatever Lil Nas X says it is. Artists (and their labels I guess) get to decide the execution and intent of their work. His contribution is important to any genre he decides to work in. Also Georgiana, AL isn't even on maps, so I'm so happy y'all mentioned my hometown. It's a cute place for a family visit or passing through on my way to the gulf.

Country culture broke my heart when Beyoncé preformed with The Dixi Chicks. I grew up on country music & had no idea people felt so split about race & country. Until Old Town Road I hadn’t listened to any country since & I have 8 Garth Brooks 💿’s.

I just want to comment on the bit. There was a claim that the instruments listed fall into the category of all instruments. But what you listed was more sting and percussion instruments. I mean old-time road still has those instruments prominently throughout the song so it still could be considered a country song. I just wanted to comment on that part. Love you guys! XOXO

I always saw Old Town Road as country. This was very insightful. I always struggled with sharing the music that I liked because it wasn't what my peers were listening too. I have a very open look on music but use to see feel ashamed because I didn't know this rapper or that R&B song. Especially when people would talk about how they were a classic and something I SHOULD know because that's what the culture demanded of me. But I have gotten to the point of "I like what I like; I know what I know". It's not my fault for not knowing something. I'm happy to listen and learn, but people seem to talk as if I deliberately ignored the music. I have certain things that I relate to despite my race and you can't help what you connect to and like.

I remember an interview with various country artists who were asked if old town road was country and a lot said yes and I only remember one no, and the no was basically "great song, really fun, but country tells a story and this song doesn't" and I remember thinking that, for a personal philosophy, that was fine. Like, people define things differently. But be consistent with it and acknowledge that black people have an uphill battle being seen as valid in industries where they are a minority.
