Montero Hill. You know him better as Lil Nas X.
His track “Old Town Road” has spent the most weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 (19 Weeks). Cock-blocking Billie Eilish from reaching the top spot and destroying “Despacito”’s reign. It’s gone platinum in: Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Belgium, New Zealand, Germany, Poland, America, The UK and Australia 8 times!
It surpassed Drake’s weekly streaming record (143 million vs 116.2 million for “In My Feelings”) He won Song of The Year at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, performed at the BET Awards, Glastonbury and posed on the cover of TIME Magazine.
Lil Nas X has only been making music for just over a year. All of this is what a dedicated kid can do with an insanely catchy hook, a knack for making memes and a little luck. But there’s plenty an artist can learn from “Old Town Road”'s success.
This is how Lil Nas X created the most popular song ever.

A prime example of how to manipulate the system. Not even saying that as a diss. It’s just the truth. The big thing was the remixes and how he used them to keep is song a top the charts for an asinine amount of time. Lil Nas did everything right

Sometimes you need time and hard work to get to the top. Sometimes it needs to "click" at right time in the right place. And it's totally fine. Not saying he didn't work on this, he actively tried to bump this song until it clicked, but still more right time right place than anything else.

He also game'd the system like Lil Nas X did, Soulija boy uploaded it to MySpace for downloads under the name of different popular artists such as 50 Cent, Britney Spears, etc. People would download the song assuming that it was by those popular artists but would instead get his song.

You dont have to be a famous internet personality, musician or actor to be successful, become a doctor and save lives, become an engineer and build something revolutionary, become a teacher, the real unsung heros, and teach the next generation, or become an astronaut and explore the cosmos for the benefit of all mankind

Hi, can you do a video about Bjork? I only dove in her most obscure parts of her discography a few weeks ago and I just can't get over how much she somehow not only reinvented herself since the Sugarcubes and Debut era, but she reshaped the whole pop landscape by with her instantly recognizable crackly voice, her eclectic and meticulous music arrangements and her offputting visuals which somehow ended up being commercially successful in an era where big female voices and bass and drums were mostly prominent , she pushed the Trip Hop and Art pop and electronic music's boundaries so far in the music industry with Post and Homogenic (and maybe Vespertine) Thank you for your content.👍

I think it's nice that Nas did that. Technically, he didn't have to, but seeing as it was a large component of his success (and I know what it's like to have someone approach you to buy your music), I really appreciate that generosity. It seems fair in the sense of creative license, and the guy didn't have much to lose if the song flopped because he got paid upfront if Nas never made one cent. That's interesting, though; I didn't realise Nas didn't make the track himself.

A bit surprised that you didn't mention Lil Nas X sampling from a song in Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts I-IV album for this song. I guess, he deserves brownie points for creativity in turning a Nine Inch Nails piece into a happy and easy listen! Only Trent Reznor is actually good!

It's amazing how well Nas played and memed the system, intentional or not. On top of that, he proved that he wasn't just a one hit wonder because his new album Montero is brimming with bangers. He's gone on to use these strategies for every one of his songs, pushing things as far as he can and including insane videos; even for his smaller songs he gets slick 3D visualization video on youtube. Also that tweet from Billy Ray warms my heart.
