Is Olive Video Editor Good?
Today I wanted to take a deeper look at the new Olive 0.2 version which will introduce a new design and new features along with a node compositing element. During this Video Review of Olive, the question will be, how good is Olive 0.2 compared to its predecessor Olive 0.1? We will be comparing and contrasting both versions of Olive and you will decide if this video editing program is a viable choice.

Great Review, i think this Software will be a real competitor since it looks like a Premiere Pro Clone. One should mention that Premiere Pro (which is used by many professionals) is by no means stable. It is so refreshing to see new open source video editors!

I'm used to Davinci Resolve , tried Olive editor 0.2 and found it very intuitive and lightweight, i discovered this software because i was searching a way to automatically cut and remove silent parts in videos, too bad it cut but doesn't remove the silent parts, overall i'm impressed !

mhm istg those open source software are getting so good these days the game engine godot and LLMS music making software and krita digital painting software all of those are free and of high quality

i use olive 0.1 since about 8 months and i must say its pretty much the best software i have ever used. even on my potato pc it runs well and all my videos were made with olive. and also olive is the only software that i was able to use without having to watch any tutorials and stuff since its really easy to use. coming from someone who edited their videos on the ps4 back in 2018 this doesnt mean much but i can see the software being better than anything else in the future. in my 8 months i only experienced 3 crashes but they were fine since the software automatically stored backups and allowed me to continue editing ater crashing. overall, its a really good software and i can recommend it to anyone that wants to get into video editing but doesnt know much about it.

You might not want to use this background music. It is not royalty-free anymore, KZbin removed it from their free libraries and retroactively punished some of the people who used it, like Matt Lowne. he lost monetization on almost every video he ever published.

I used the version 0.1. I liked and tell you for sure don't use it yet. Stil have problems and need a lot of adjustments, resourcers and complements. The interface is very similar to Premiere Pro and that is cool. Shot Cut is, for now, the better choice.

Why are they working on a new version I wonder, when the first version from 2019 isn't really stable? I have the 2019 version on my Linux system, and it is too glitchy to trust for anything substantial.

I've been using Olive 0.1 for over a year now and have got pretty good at it (at least I can edit videos quickly that meet my requirements). I have to admit I am a bit lost with Olive 0.2. I download it from time to time and I just don't seem to be able to get it to do the things I am used to doing in 0.1. I agree the node editor is ambitious - but I wonder if its actually finished enough to use? I can't get it to do anything useful. I know its Alpha but should the node editor work now - or is it still not finished enough to use? Thanks 😀

Yea it depends on which video editing software your using, but you simply just add a text box or effect on the the timeline and place it wherever you want in the video. Then just remove the footage underneath. I might make a video on this since I have been seeing the question a lot.

@@EJTech. have you noticed on the videos that olive exports that the videos can have lines in them especially when they are shakey, i even put the quality super high and it helped a bit but some were still there.

That sounds like a "Scan Mode" issue. It usually occurs when using the "Interlaced" scan mode option. I would switch it to "Progressive" and that should remove the lines in the export settings.

I used it for a little bit, the first video I edited it worked perfectly, but after that, it lagged way too much. I couldn't go through one clip without it lagging. I looked it up and it said that there probably were too many videos in it. So I tried to do it with just one 2 minute clip but it kept lagging so now I'm looking for a new editor that is free.

@@alessandracastillo8922 I don't use it myself so I can't say for certain but on linux kdenlive has good reputation as it is far more mature than other options. If you need free as in free of cost video editor then DaVinci Resolve is also an option.

Lagging is probably down to the hardware not the software. We obviously don't know the spec of your machine but it's often the main culprit. Usually not enough RAM. If you have a low end machine they will all lag and Davinci won't work at all. It needs at least 8gb of RAM.

Messages like that usually appear when your installing apps that are not found in the Windows store. I ran it and even scanned it with the Windows Defender and its been fine
