The best description that I heard of OutRun is "It's not a racing game, it's a driving game". Once you think of things that way, everything kind of starts to make sense.

Played Out Run on the Game Gear, was a real fun game to play. Also lots of replay value since each crossway path brings you to a different area.

Pretty old video at this point, but I think Horizon Chase deserves a shout-out as a spiritual successor of Outrun. Certainly more of a competitive racing game, but it's got that look, feel, and sound, and it's super fun, too :)

I've owned both Hyperstone Heist and Turtles in Times for many, many years. My opinion on Hyperstone Heist was always that it would have been just as good as Turtles in Time if only it had a few more levels. It's pretty flawless otherwise, and they did a phenomenal job with the Genesis' limited color.

I’m bad at SHO but I love its whole vibe so much I will pick it up occasionally and play it anyway. I also spent quite a bit of time at the Outrun arcade cabinet in Yakuza :P

I'm am huge OutRun Fan Boy that I really enjoyed playing Arcade, Master System, Genesis, PC Engine, 3DS, Nintendo Switch and Game Boy Advance even the best remake was Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast on PS2 and PSP.

It's true, the super-scaler technology that was used previously in Hang On & Space Harrier really shines here. SEGA would release Afterburner the year after- It was hit after hit for them

Used to play it in the arcade tbh, it really is timeless and infinitely replayable. So many games tried to capture its spirit after, but failed.

After watching this review it reminds me of how I would love to just go on a long distance road trip from my home state of California all the way to Maine the opposite corner of the country from here, but that would be incredibly expensive as I'd be buying gas constantly and have to make sure my car is in the most perfect condition because anything could go wrong and some states just don't have many people and many cities so I could get stuck out in the middle of nowhere possibly without any cell service just waiting for one car to come and stop and help me out all for whoever to arrive to just keep driving by.

This was a good port of OutRun. At the time, it was relatively close to the Arcade version.

The computer version of the game, the ones in cassette format, came with an extra cassete with the full soundtrack that you use in a regular cassette player while playing the game or just listen to it.

If you like this game, you should check out mobile's Final FWY 2R. It was inspired by this game and it's really cool. It's 2000's pixel art and it looks amazing!

I believe the "muted" engine was a limitation of the Genesis sound chip. Almost every Genesis car game I've played had either engine noises or music but not both. Some games even had a setting in the options menu where you can choose to have either music or car noises.

The Genesis has 2 soundchips. The YM2612 has 6 FM channels (one can be used as PCM instead). The SN76489 has 3 square + 1 noise channel. The Outrun music on the Megadrive uses all 6 FM channels and the noise channel. Engine/tyre sound from one of those square channels does not sound great, but it's ok (Super Hang On does it that way). Also it would probably be possible to use the square channels for some elements of the music without losing much, freeing some FM channels for engine/tyre sounds.

Compadre is exclusive for "your male dude". Then, "Comadre" would be the female equivalent, but it has a gossipy connotation in some regions of sudamerica. The term originally refered to a godfather(or mother)-like-figure which is at the same time the best friend of the kid's father... Sudamerican things, lol. Anyway, it is was funny to hear my mother language in one of my favorite games of all time.

Play Outrun 2. It plays better, looks gorgeous, plus, you can unlock the original. It's also cheap to buy (unlike Coast2Coast) and the Sega Ages port.
