It's definitely a balance between the 2. You should be putting out quality, just don't lose momentum by not putting out fresh stuff to keep your name in thier heads. It's hard to say what release timeline works for that balance. It depends on whether you're up and coming, or already established. One good album a year (possibly 2 if you're a new item and can make them quality drops), and a few singles in between should be plenty...more than that and they better be hot tracks that impress the fans or you run the risk of folks not being hyped and looking forward to new drops when you release them. But hey...who the f am I? 😅 what do i know anyways? Do you.

One thing I'm thankful for in this rap battle with K. Dot and Drake is , that rappers seem to want to rap again, and drop bars. For awhile there, I thought rap music quality was going to dip so low, that hip hop would go the way of rock and country. It would be scooped up by big business, and the history and culture would be forgotten.
@atarahsvoice5268
@atarahsvoice5268 Ай бұрын
It’s funny that you say that because I’ve always understood this about K. Dot, a long time ago. That’s exactly what all of this beef is about, if we as consumers & they as artists to get a hold & take back control of the music & art that they created to make it to 50 years, it will not be around to see another 50 years

Canibus was the MC who got me into rapping. Buckingham Palace is the hardest track I've ever heard to this day. Because Canibus made every bar count. This man was rapping about alien life in 98. Total stoner nerd shit that I've come to emulate today, with a mix of Death Grips and Danny Brown. It's safe to say Kendrick Lamar Made Lyrics Great Again.

Love this! The whole Kendrick vs Drake really put it the whole Rap industry into a reset and that whole bout got everyone waking up as well. Quantity is not everything,Quality is everything. Especially if you want to evolve your sound. Cardi B for example is having so much trouble to come out with new music cause she haven’t changed her sound nor doesn’t have a sound of her own. Meaning she hasn’t evolve whatsoever so whenever she comes out with new music it sounds the same Especially coming with 10 to 15 versions of one single song. Punch was right it’s hella over saturated. Now with ice spice is having trouble charting cause she’s coming out with the same sound with different songs too.

The problem with releasing every 3-4 for independent artists is that they've acquiesced their business to other platforms, so their algorithm and marketing dictates an artist's reach. Back when the platforms emphasized discovery, the heavy lifting was done for them, so email lists and customer communication weren't always necessary to stay "relevant". Now, you really have to make sure that you are in direct contact with your fanbase or you will NOT hear about their concert, an album drop or a merchandise drop. I've missed like 20 concerts and been like "Yo they were here? When did they even announce a tour?" Wouldn't have happened if they had text alerts or an email blast instead of depending on Spotify or Instagram.

The masses not being able to read or write in America is such a real thing... Like the "freestyle era" and "punch in" style of music... Because its not just hip-hop... This has been a very producer centric era... People have stopped expecting lyrics and gravitated to more catchy hooks and knocking beats... But as DIY'ers we have to take some of the blame pie too... I've seen so many independent artists one in particular being Russ... over the years tell aspiring artist to flood the market... And you can't do that effectively writing your music and crafting quality lyrics... So I for one am glad to see a shift back to putting the emphasis on quality music over quantity... I have slacked alot over the past few years just going through my struggles as a man... But this shift in the culture is a sign that the era in which is better tailored to my style of artistry will flourish... So I got so work to do family... Cheer for a watch out for too my fellow DIY'ers!

I look at hip hop the same way I look at movies, books, or music in every other genre. If you put out one project every four years and they're all good, I rate you high. I really couldn't care less about the "owning the summers" logic that is so common in hip hop. Sure, it's cool that some rappers have dominated the charts year after year in their prime, but honestly a lot of those artists aren't that complex lyrically so it's more than likely easier to pump out project after project if you aren't focused on challenging yourself and audiences with your pen or musical style. I value risk-taking, so when an artist takes their time and comes back with quality bodies of work, that's something I can point to and applaud.

Side note: Rap has always and always been in the streets. As soon as the current generation learns to write their own lyrics, learn to freestyle using a word or concept given to the emcee by someone else and rhyming based on that off the dome. Hosting local open mic sessions and battles instead of being behind social media screens Hip-Hop will never die, I’m a 90s kid from south africa we lived this lifestyle and hip hop is a huge part of me. What I noticed is the younger generation only gives a damn about parties someone to f**k, alcohol weed and shisha pipes at parties. No creation, no poetry no music it’s an unsettling change in culture between generations. Sad…

The studies of prolific creatives all say the same thing…it requires Quantity to get to Quality. The problem here is that most of those ideas aren’t that good and therefore don’t necessarily need a commercial push because they simply exist. So now, what you’re getting is not Quality in Quantity in art, it’s Quality marketing of subpar music.

I don't buy it. Jay Z dropped every year in the first leg of his career - a lot of great albums and classics came from that. Nas dropped 6 HARD albums in 3 years. If you can't drop every year you're just not that nice. And it's fine, but don't act like it's some quality vs quantity argument. YOU can't make a great quantity of quality work BECAUSE you're not that nice. That being said, not everyone is Jay Z or Nas.

Quality of lyrics or Quality of amount of doe? Just because some artist is making more doe doesn't mean they are a good lyricist. And someone who is a good lyricist might not make as much doe as someone who isn't. I'm a musician and never been into the popular club music mostly. Because most the time club music sacrifices lyrics for the beat instead.

Ppl forget the Rap Music is over a half a Century old. Art always evolves. There may be a newer form of musical expressionism on the horizon(?). Where is the value of music in these days whereas just abt anybody can do it, especially nowadays with AI(?). Music is literally cheaper than a Bag of Chips. Practically Valueless. It is surviving through the bloodlines of The Strip Clubs only. It's all in the hands of The Strippers that still dictates what kinda songs will make it to the top.
