It's a combination of the challenge it driving a realistic style of truck, community of people. And a big thing for me is that I build full-size adventure Vehicles for a living. But I don't always have time to plan a trip and go out in my personally fullsize trucks so having the mini trucks for an afternoon if getting out. Absolutely great video man, great perspective and way of thinking!

I think for most people they look at us adults as just playing with toys. But it truly is more than that. This is definitely a great way to get out, most people have never experienced Rc and once they do they get hooked,it's awesome! As far as crawlers I think it's more for the people that actually understand the scale aspect of these crawlers, they are amazing. If you've never went offroading in a actual full sized rig you just won't understand these Rc crawlers. I love Rc crawling and bashing, all extremely fun. For the people that have never tried and you get the chance, try it out and you'll see. At the same time yeah it's not for everyone. It's an expensive hobby for sure. I love this hobby!! It's definitely more fun with your buddies. The competition factor is always there, especially with the crawlers. If he makes a line that I can't make it's on lol challenge excepted 🤣 and if I can't make it or he can't make the line I made it's bragging rights lol its a hell of a time.

Hi there Craig - I agree with all your points here.....There is a tangible therapy of 'doing' - when you add in some company and vitamin D...it becomes a 'doing' that is actually good for us both physically/mentally. Let's face it....there are worse things one could be doing with their time :) Yes....when a collection of guys get together and do something as simple as crawling - it really can be the catalyst for open conversation...it actually helps me crawl better! I can see the pain of loss in your face during part of the video - you were perhaps reflecting on some great 'zen' times with a good friend. Nice dedication. Peace to you my friend :)

That's a deep one, Craig! I started RCing with a Kyosho Inferno (no less!) aged 8, back in '92ish and built my first Tamiya aged 9... But after '99 I grew away into other interests, as an energetic teenager that I was, especially once I was able to drive a full-sized vehicle. My whole life I've always been all about performance driving, and being competitive, but after the piece of paper or result is achieved, after a while, it becomes a bit empty. Then, I started appreciating the experiences, the moments, the feelings. I guess that is maturing in a way. I wonder sometimes why I came back to RCing (and so hard) at the beginning of this year. The pandemic confinement hit me much harder this year mentally than last, as in 2020 it was something new to adapt to, which I'm always looking forward as a challenge, but once it becomes a habit, to me it's a struggle to keep motivation. I'm a difficult person to keep attention on something because of this, sometimes. I've always wanted a house with a big garage in order to be able to work on my cars and bikes, in order to save money and have more of each. To me, in variety lies the pleasure of things, if that makes sense. In other words, "colors" add to the experiences. So, unfortunately, that big garage hasn't happened, yet. But with RCing, which I kept an eye on for years I was always saying, oh, some day I'm going to get this or that RC car, because I loved the body, because I loved the real counterpart, but not enough to commit to the full expensive and logistic complications of owning the real thing. And after this long rambling, I land into crawling. I was always fascinated by adventure (thanks to Indiana Jones, mostly), and regarding to vehicles, by events such as Paris Dakar, and the Camel Trophy. But I was not so keen on the more amateur side of 4wding. I always think that a mistake when pushing it, will roll a car or send you rolling down a mountain, sometimes without coming back. And I like to push it to the limits... I know, because I've done a bit of both in cars and, to a degree, with motorcycles too. So, anyway, back to crawling, it allows me to build something out of a few parts, to make something realistic and joyful to watch -as I've also always been into model kits (sense of accomplishment)-. It allows me to drive, and after driving so many things I have grown to appreciate the technique behind it, but from a 3rd person view. So for this, being able to drive an RC vehicle slowly rather than fast around circles, which is fun in a different kinda way, being up close to the action, as if watching or even making a movie, with a natural, beautiful surroundings, it really takes me away, sometimes slows me down, and allows me to appreciate the experiences. Even when I'm on my own, but much better when shared, of course. I don't think this comment or any of the others are straight for you, Craig. Probably they're all more necessary towards each of their authors. So thank you for channeling this out, and bringing these good vibes to all of us!

Gret video! I just attended my first SORCA crawling event a couple days ago. Accidentally found out it was happening in the state park near my house. Hesitated about entering, but wanted to talk to like minded individuals and check out all the trucks. The camaraderie was almost instant! you could approach anyone and start a conversation, cause everyone likes to talk about their trucks.I had a blast with 2 DNF's, but cleared 5 gates in each course. Plus, I got 41 scale points! I've got my to do list on the truck, from the competition, and know what to work on, so I can do a little better next time. All in all, a great way to spend a day or a week-end. Run a truck all day, and talk trucks to a lot of new people I never met, but am looking forward to seeing them at one of the future events! Keep up the great work on your videos!

And there's loads of fun in it, trying to pass obstacles in good / bad weather, seeing how upgrades affect performance, adding bits to make it look more realistic.. Hi, i am from europe and do rc for about 30 years now and i always do scale models. First ships, mostley warships and tugs, than i went to rc tanks, and the last few years trucks such as the Tamiya globe liner and hauler. And for just a few months i started with crawlers. The most fun i had so far is just go walking through the woods and beaches and the comments of people along the way. And yes, i really want to share it amd walk with friends but here there are no "believers in the rc". I probally have to search and start up my own rc group for people to join. It is realy super relaxing, even in the winter like now, just to be on your own doing fun stuff in the outdoors. And i hope that i can share the feeling with others, i have 2 crawlers, a tamiya cc01 defender and a mix rc4wd/axial jeep rubicon scaler. Everyone must walk their own path, but for what it's worth, many people I know don't 'get' crawling either. I embrace the fact I love it and that some of my best friendships have grown through mutual enjoyment of this hobby. You've got to decide what matters, ultimately. Life is short, etc. But if this brings you joy, what is there to hide? I'm not on Facebook but there are many active groups around the place that do social crawls. Might be worth seeing if there's something on. May help you feel legitimate while you work through this! Be well.

I enjoy the concentration of the hobby. While trying to figure out an obstacle, I am really thinking only about wheel placement and how the vehicle is going to behave, and watching the suspension articulate and the tires conform. I also enjoy the micro-wrenching aspect, improving the vehicle with new parts and then taking it out to see how they change dynamics. And of course, it's a lot cheaper and more accessible than 1:1 scale rock crawling, a matter of hundreds rather than thousands of dollars.

Oddly enough this is still on my mind. I get the feeling you might have some experience with men's groups / men's work, or at least be familiar with the concept. It's something I've considered getting involved in, but it never occurred to me to also combine it with crawling (until now). It seems like a great idea. I was wondering if you had any thoughts about how to build a men's group based on crawling, if you were starting from nothing. Thanks.

It's a great match, men's mental health and crawling, yes! In an unstructured way I've pursued the blending of these two things for the past few years in social events in particular, but not more than that yet. It is one of the goals of the RC-TNT project (channel and website) to also create a club and run competitive and social events with a focus on men's mental health. Liability insurance and creating a separate legal structure is next on the list but that's still a few months away at best. Beyond that, or aside from it, I think the main thing will be to just build it and they will come. That's been my experience so far. I want to foster a friendly environment for people to hang out and chat while doing stuff like crawling. It's good.

I like the crawler RC vehicles a lot, but I'm unable to participate in comps due to mobility issues. I have severe arthritis in my lower spine and knees, so maneuvering on the terrain where comps take place is problematic. For this reason I have 1/24 and 1/18 scale crawlers for the most part, since those comps are usually done on man-made courses on raised tables or platforms and I can walk around those. As far as scale, I prefer it, I have an FSM FJ40 that I really love to just drive around the neighborhood or on easy trails where the realism of the vehicle allows me my "play time", sparking the imagination that I had as a kid. The FJ40 is a fun WIP that I'm slowly altering and adding to in order make it more realistic, while I also try to keep the performance of it as high as possible. I appreciate the insight this video brings to this corner of the hobby, and I still wish I could participate in 1/10 scale comps

Thanks so much for sharing that. There are some locations where you can probably participate, even with mobility challenges. These are typically rock gardens. One of our club locations has walkways strewn throughout and with a spotter/helper to reposition your rig and call lines where needed, I'm sure you could still participate. My home rock garden also would allow this, even with a wheelchair, for example. Maybe you'll find something local where you can still wheel with the guys? I hope so. Glad you're enjoying your fms scale experience. My fj40 is still in the nifty foam box they ship in. I really need to unpack that thing and have a play with it! And I owe the 24th scale rigs some love again too. What a great hobby. All the best with getting out there as you're able. Hope you can find a group who are supportive and accommodating. Best wishes to you.

Hi Mate! The last weeks I was struggling what kind of new rc car I'll get. Should I buy something smaller than my Traxxas Hoss, for example the mini e-revo, to easily carry around in my backpack? Or should I try crawling and get my first crawler? So I searched on KZbin, if crawlers are boring and instantly found your video 😊 I love the feeling of pulling the remote trigger and the car just speed away. But on the other hand, it starts to get boring: speeding around, some jumps, maybe something will break... Then I saw your video. And you just mentioned one important thing for me: memories of my childhood! Back in the early 80s, when I was about 10, my father bought me a Nikko rc car. It was a red Jeep Wrangler with two shift gearing and a cable winch. The car wasn't fast, even in 2nd gear. But I had so much fun driving it in the backyard of my parents house 😃 and if it got stuck, I used the winch to rescue it 😁 So, basically THIS Nikko Jeep was my first crawler! And I got a lot of good memories playing with it almost every day. And now, I just ordered the Traxxas TRX-4m Defender in orange 😊 I'll take it with me on my hiking trips, like I took the Nikko with me, when we went hiking in the swiss alps with our parents back then. Thank you so much for your inspiring video! 👍🏻 Best regards Niels

And tomorrow I'll receive some cute accessories like a roof net, shovel etc. Can't wait to get him into the forest and mud 😊💪🏻 Best wishes to you and your family! Niels

It takes us back to the safe curious days of our childhood. We would see the vehicles that amazed and excited us. They rumbled and growled making us beware and get out of its way. Rc is the adult version of gettin down on your belly and imagining the world with you in control. If you like speed or watching the suspension suck up 2 and 4 foot obstacles with rubber squealing at 500r.p.m.s or slowly howling some low pressured rock tires up over a pile, it's returning to a childhood to daydream and imagine.

For sure. I used to wish rc was like it is today, growing up in the 80s. But now it just means an extension of childhood wonder and fun so I'm not complaining!

Crawling hobby has helped me in the process of reparenting and distracting myself off depression. Its been 2 years now since I've gotten into the hobby starting off with a cheap rgt, I am more addicted to crawling than I've ever been even after 2 years

I was thinking about my reply while buttering my toast and came up with a whole lot of responses, but I would be just repeating what you said. I think for me it comes down to the mechanical side, I love to make my “little toy car” do things it really shouldn’t, but then I will drive through deep water and come straight home and strip it down to service it because I enjoy that side of it too. I have made new friends, my wife and I are happy to be on our own, give us a big impersonal hotel over a B&B where it might get too “peopley” and we would have to talk to someone but crawling has made me get out there. And now my wife has her own it is even better. Anyway, you are welcome and thank YOU as well. One day…….

I rc crawl because it is relaxing even if I break or can't make the climb. I just enjoy being in nature. Plus it's a lot cheaper than full size wheeling.

Plenty of R&D in this space, for real! You just gave me a great idea for a video. Cheapest electronics vs pricey stuff in the same rig. Performance difference? And you know, I like how even with a cheap fit-out in a crawler, you can mix it up with the most expensive rigs and still have a great time. It doesn't have to be a hugely expensive hobby. Interesting!

It takes quite a bit of skill, and the challenge of doing it is partly why it’s so stimulating. You Have a Really Nice Course but if you do it up and make visually please your Views will skyrocket as a Nice good visual course is Very Highly Admired Especially if you can’t have one hey.

That's probably me, honestly. Slow is just fine. I don't judge you for going fast though, it just means we're not compatible for trail runs, so I'll save your number for when we're going bashing with the fast stuff :)

Very nice, totally get that. I find that element to be a big part of the stress relief from crawling and trailing - that suspension of disbelief, and of being caught up in the driving to the exclusion of life's worries. Add a friend or two and it's even better :)

Like what's the point of doing anything you might as well say lol, it's fun I remember as a kid playing with little stomper 4x4s put one AA battery and off it went even had lights. Now that I'm older I have a 4 year old boy to let drive my crawlers and it dont feel as akward doing it alone haha.

They say despite all technological advances meant to make life easier, the stress on males 18-65 is the highest its ever been. Not saying things arent bad for all but historically men are the ones who give up their interests to provide for the family. At the same time there is really nothing to acknowledge this or even provide the message that men should take time to relax and enjoy something from time to time or they could suffer problems down the road. If staring at fish calms you down or getting the rc juiced up for a rip, its really as healthy and relaxed as some guys can get.

I'm right there with you on all points. Things are better than they've ever been in history, but the nature of suffering has changed. I'm thinking over ideas to build things around this hobby with a focus on men's mental health. Got a few things on the cook but there's plenty of opportunity to give back to this hobby that's helped me so greatly. Thanks for weighing in. Your thoughts are valuable and useful here. Cheers
