Newbie question: Dividend portfolio investors, please help me understand the benefit of a buy-and-hold dividend portfolio compared to a buy-and-hold non-dividend portfolio during the years of building the portfolio, considering the taxes owed on dividends. In your opinion, why doesn't the taxation on dividends make this strategy inferior to building a portfolio consisting of securities that do not pay dividends and are not subject to the same taxation? Assume neither portfolio will be drawn from until they reach the target level for sustaining monthly payouts/withdrawals to live on - defined as "retirement" in this question. During the years you are building the portfolio you are taxed on the dividends received regardless if you take the cash or automatically reinvest the dividend. Compare this to a non-dividend portfolio that is not taxed unless you realize gains, which in this scenario would be after the building years during the "retirement" years. Thank you for your opinions.
@SpicyBoba74317 ай бұрын
When I retire I won’t have to really worry as much about the year or how the market is performing. I can pass it down. I could retire off my dividend income without ever selling a cent of my portfolio. Once the snowball gets going, the snowball gets going. Flexibility to maintain my portfolio if I want to use that to supplement my income for maybe a surprise move to a HCOL place like Cali, without having to sell.
@DylanIE_7 ай бұрын
I will provide you with an answer purely based from a mathematical standpoint. Zero. There is absolutely 0 benefit to having a dividend portfolio over a non dividend portfolio. In fact, if you have dividends in a taxable account, there is only extra liability to having a dividend portfolio. If you want to maximise the efficiency of your portfolio, you should only care about total return. If a company looks like a great deal but pays no dividend, you should still buy it. In the same way if a company looks overpriced but pays a good dividend, you shouldn't buy it, given that it is overpriced. In short, dividends should not be a factor in investing. The decision to invest in a company should be made regardless of its dividend payments. The only benefits to dividends is the mental factor of it. The mental stability and being able to better control yourself with selling/not selling etc. If you struggle with the mental attitude required to be succesful in investing, dividends can be a good choice. However, in a universe without emotion, dividends are either totally irrelevant, or a negative. They, mathematically, are never better.

I think you need to consider yield on cost as part of the benefits of a dividend growth portfolio. You can prefer a growth based portfolio which is valid, but by investing in dividend growth stocks over the long term, you can massively improve your yield on cost for a lot of your dividend shares. The dividends growing yearly are going to exponentially compound your returns in a bear or bullish market. Especially in a tax advantaged DRIP portfolio.

What about LGEN for dividends??
@markeh19716 ай бұрын
Hi LGEN is currently at 7.8% ish at the moment so for UK stocks this may be better if you are in the UK and buy through an ISA or SIPP. The current price offers a lot of potential up side being so low at the mo due to interest rates in the USA. For diversification this offers an attractive buy and definitely if you can hold out until interest rates drop and the share price goes up. Buy low and sell at a high if you can, if that is your thing. Take care M

@Dividendology7 ай бұрын
It’s a pretty common way for REITS to pursue growth. They have to pay out most of their earnings in the form of dividends, and right now it makes more sense to issue shares rather than take out high interest debt.

Should someone in their 20’s start buying in now? I decided to put the additional money into VOO for a couple decades then I’ll start up buying more again. Just think I need to capitalize on growth while I have plenty of time. Is this a wrong move while O is sitting at an attractive share price?

It really depends on your goals.
@andrewb35167 ай бұрын
As someone in their early 20’s, I originally was attracted to O after getting into dividend investing but after considering my (our) long time horizon I decided to focus more on growth/div growth stocks. I don’t think O has a lot of capital appreciation upside compared to many other stocks, and I’m not worried about the current income now (monthly div). But yeah definitely depends on your goals!

Newbie asking.... O is REIT, can we look at Mainstreet Capital (MAIN) as a BDC. Any correlation in BDC and REIT with interest rate inc/dec?
@kevinblanchet98117 ай бұрын
Long O in a custodial account ... (25 year growth)... will stop the Drip and enjoy a nice vacation
@mjsmcd6 ай бұрын
Higher rates can hurt reit cuz of div comparison BDCs must borrow money in order to lend to companies at higher rates. They accomplish this by using a variety of fixed-rate and floating-rate loans. Changes in interest rate policy can dramatically affect the margin between borrowing and lending costs and the amount the BDC is able to distribute.

@markeh19716 ай бұрын
@@glennshoemake4200Hi I see a lot about using this for a steady monthly paying share and holding for the long term. I currently have a small self managed pension in the UK and at these undervalued prices it looks attractive as a long term hold and offers diversification away from the UK market. Interest rates are currently making a lot of shares look undervalued with strong core businesses underlying it. Take care and remember it goes up and down but as long as the dividend keeps rolling in and the business is sound then just enjoy the ride. M.
