The reason you can’t find much information is the deal is not complete yet. When its done, you’ll get more information. That being said, most of the information is out there. There is an interview with Jarred Land about this. Is it good or bad? Its likely very good for both.

Your channel so far is the only one that’s gotten it correct so far. Enjoyed the conversation with Jarred and Phil, lots of pertinent information in that interview from both including your prologue, good job dude.

Fabulous news for Nikon. Nikon QC is much better than Canon. I shot Nikon for a couple decades and now I'm on Canon to match the Cinema Cameras I have.. I do miss the Nikon quality & dependability but I'm willing to overlook a few annoyances for now.. The Nikon's Look is also a bit closer to RED's honestly compared to Canon. They are also currently developing the Camera that will be taken to the moon. I like Canon and Nikon for different reasons. I think it's a big win for everyone honestly and Nikon's glass library is unmatched for the quality and price point. I'm excited to see what comes of this new relationship.

1:57 - this is inaccurate. Blackmagic had a global shutter camera, and Sony had their widely popular CineAlta F55 global shutter camera. RED was not the first to implement this; all they did was resurface the sensor technology and make it somewhat popular again.

Nah, the reason RED settled the suit is because Nikon could prove the patent was invalid. There is copious proof that RED sold the camera before the patent was filed. That invalidates the patent. Anyone else could do the same next.
@livejames93744 ай бұрын
I don’t believe that to be true. If internet warriors could easily find that information then why couldn’t Apple’s etc lawyers
@BrandonTalbot4 ай бұрын
IF they could they wouldn't have dropped it, and the patent would be invalid - and therefore they wouldn't have had to pay for it.

Nikon also holds a lot of patents. If the buyout out wasn't originally part of their settlement, It's probably likely that Nikon had a list of random patents they could sue red for. Even if red would have won the patent lawsuits, the legal fees would have been astronomical. Basically nikon could have threatened mutually assured destruction.

Nikon have some phenomenal lenses, and a much bigger user base, RED can gain a lot from this also, I think it's a win-win.

It makes no sense for RED to be purchased by Canon or Sony as those companies already have cinema lines. There was some rumors floating from insiders that Nikon was planning to buy a cine company and RED was in contention.
@FredCho-rq1wj4 ай бұрын
It would have made sense for Canon to buy RED as buyers may consider going towards Canon more if they thought they could upgrade to RED in the future and be on the same mount. Also to protect Canon's market position in video. Now Canon has just let Nikon get a serious entry into the video market.

@@FredCho-rq1wj I don't think that Canon had a say in it. RED wasn't in any way simply free to buy. Maybe Nikon was just the best partner to go with. As with Nikon RED maybe can stay RED whereas with Canon or Sony they would have been dissolved.

Interesting discussion. But yes it would benefit any and all companies to have one less competitor in the market and having the whole catalogue of resources, tech and engineers from patents to client bases is always a win. Consumers win when there is more competitors in the market but who knows what Nikon will do. We will all see realistically in 3 years how it pans out with new products and how they support the existing items for sale on RED 🕸 website 📷 🎥 🎞

It's an LLC. You can't just go in and buy it. RED would have to agree to the terms. @@FredCho-rq1wj

I think it is a great development. A more viable Nikon means more competition. More competition means more innovation from everyone. I'm still staying with Canon though.😀

RED-RAW has become ancient by tech calendar. RED has been pushed down to prosumer market level lately by ARRI. And the prosumer market is content with all those modern and updated capture formats.

Very curious about the future of the whole market. I loved my F3 and later my D810 but I not owned a Nikon camera since i moved on to Fuji GFX then later to Hasselblad with the X2D bith being 100mp for stills on the larger sensors. As a Komodo owner, I am not bothered about the mount as I use conversion to EF, M or PL and shoot r3d only. I am very curious to see what the new mix will bring. Will they Cannibalize and kill off RED and all Collaborations like Panavisiand ARRI. I wonder what this means for system updates and current systems software and hardware timely releases etc.... who knows.

Dude, you know that I am a fan. Lots of authoritative statements in this video are what I would call hollow as in have no facts behind them. I want to make a point. I own a privately held company with 73ish people on staff. As the owner of a privately held company I am not interested in sharing any of the company's financial information to the point where the forture 500 people wanted to feature us but asked for financials to publish and we promptly declined the invite. All that to say that no matter what people, as in anyone, decided to try to guess at our financial situation, 10 out of 10 times anyone trying to guess would be wrong 100% of the time. A second point, I don't agree with saying that Sony can produce a camera that can offer what the RED V-RAPTOR [X] can at a fraction of the price. Let's be clear, can any camera in the universe today shoot at 8K Vista Vision 60p with a Global Shutter in R3D with Extended Highlights On allowing for 20-21 Stops of Dynamic Range? If there is, it would be breaking news. Again, I'm a Fan but I have to keep it real.

Here is... (1) why Nikon had a real shot with their lawsuit against RED in contrary to Apple, Sony and others: (2) why Nikon won't licence internal compressed RAW in the near future to competitors: (3) why it's a good thing: (1) Nikon had an entirely different lawsuit approach as shown in the video below. And they surely have tangible evidence for it, which other competitors don't have. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZC7Y2h8p5d-la8 (2) BUT if Nikon had won the lawsuit instead of the joint dismissal and agreement with RED in 2023, RED would have lost their patent. Which wouldn't have been just a big loss for RED but a loss for Nikon too. Because not just Nikon would have benefitted from a "free" patent, even more so Nikon's competitors, who already have a good grasp in the video/cinema industry. So with their joint dismissal of the lawsuit and their agreement the important patent still stays intact. And now RED and Nikon can benefit from each other without other competitors benefitting from the patent. (3) In a strong competition with big companies like Canon and Sony having a strong ally behind your back is a good thing for development and production resources AND in the end for the consumer.

I hope this forces Canon to up their game. I'm loyal for a few reasons. But I never feel like they have my best interest at heart. Sony and Nikon seem to want push the envelope. Cano seems content and it's frustrating. Granted, the 24-105mm 2.8z is a wonder and should be getting more buzz.

Film production is not the wild, wild west as in a few years past. There is a camera + accessories for every price point and ecosystem. There is saturation and maturation on both the production and client side. There is no bad modern camera on the market now. The global shutter offerings(low-to-high) is tremendous in it own right. Not the first obviously [Blackmagic, AJA, Sony] but RED makes a compelling decision for production outfits needing to get turnkey real world and virtual production work done right now. And no one yet fully understands the scope of A.I. penetration into traditional and emerging markets. For the RED user base, there may be some concern NIkon could homogenize the RED tech into something unrecognizable or undesirable. After all, Nikon is a public company with it's own set of ethos and financial expectations. In the early 2000's RED read the tea leaves correctly, jumped in the emerging digital camera market early with a unique product proposition, took a respectable pole position, remained competitive, branded well, stayed true to it's original vision. The Nikon/RED acquisition? Golden parachute, market pressures, business synergies? Who can really know?

This is good for 2 people. I've been eyeing a Komodo for a couple of years. I'm soooo glad I didn't buy one. Doesn't Canon make the sensors for the Komodo? I wonder where the Canon mount in RED cameras will be in 5 years and where RAW video will be in 5 years. I'm not so sure this one is as good as people think. Manufacturing will move offshore. Nikon was asleep at the wheel with video for so long. Did they suddenly get smart? I'm not so sure.
