I got my mom into RS way back at the dawn of RS2. She found success and a level of Celebrity status in the game (W42 Fishing Guild). She was everyone's Mom and deeply cared about other players. When she became a P-Mod I had already "quit" RS and didn't come back until recently. My mom- Mercy Light- passed away in October and I started fresh in December with a new account (to max in her honour) and have turned her account into a memorial. I don't use it but I hope to see her name light up in my Friends. She was addicted to the game but it was because she was free in the RS world. She was amazing and my biggest regret is not playing with her more.

Learning self control with runescape has actually made my life overall better. Before i used to cram long sessions while neglecting my real life, going between quitting the game and coming back. As of a few years back i started to play more disciplined. During the weeks i barely play at all, i just do a 30 minute daily run at night - - - >sinkholes + caches +farming. Then during weekends i play a bit more unless im meeting with friends etc. I realised that in order to play the game I had to do well in life aswell and see the game as a fun hobby rather than my full time work. Some tips I have to give to players that want to be more self controlled: 1. Dont play the game during mornings or during days at weekdays, this can cause you to indirectly lose focus during your daily life as your mind is still thinking about the game. 2. Eat well, sleep well, excerzise etc, have a social life. Then runescape doesnt become your entire hobby for your freetime either. 3. Do a short daily run during weekdays, will get you good exp without you putting hours of work in every day and will pay off long term. 4. Have some days when you know you can play a bit more, might be Friday, Sunday. 5. Meditate, weird tip maybe but meditation can be good for focus and concentrating aswell as motivation and discipline. So you can stay hyperfocused at school, work etc without that 3 hour telos run from yesterday fill up your mind. Last tip. From time to time take a 1-2 week break from the game entirely, and do other stuff.

Before watching: I don’t think RuneScape is more addictive than any other game. It’s easier to play while doing other things thus making it easy to rack up a lot of hours fairly quickly. For instance, me and my wife will both afk if we’re just casually watching some tv together. Clicking once every few doesn’t take away from our time together. Especially with mobile being out on androids, it’s nothing to play for more than a couple hours a day because, depending on what you’re doing, you don’t actually have to interact with the game that much. I do think the long term goals like comp/trim/insane final boss, etc. make it easier for players to grind day in and day out as it seems that, no matter what you do, you’re constantly working towards a goal. I for one love the feeling of accomplishing something, both irl and in games. I think that’s the addicting part of RuneScape. If I didn’t have the achievements to look forward to, I wouldn’t still be killing QBD after 1000 kills.

It really wasn't until I had my son that I realized the hold it had on me. I quit for about 5 years. I play again now, but nothing like I used to, it's all very casual now. Though, when DXP comes around I'll grind like I used, or at least try, getting older starts to take a toll on my stamina lol.

Runescape is a way of nostalgia. You want to come back to the game because you had a lot of fun playing it when you were young. Now you are a bit more intelligent and there are so many things to discover so you put time and effort in it because you love your childhood game. Not realising that the amount of time and effort you put into a game can be used for other things to more benefit your wellbeing and mental health. Also want to touch on the fact that its not nessacerily runescape that is addictive but just the fact on doing something on a screen. It can be your phone, laptop, tv or other device. You will use it and lose the sence of reality for a little while. That is because your brain knows this ain't true and you can't really do it in the real world. You like the exitement and rush it gives you and therefore you will keep doing it. Same for watching video's, playing games or just using social media like Whatsapp or Facebook. The world is changing but idk how we will get used to being addicted and wanting to have something " to do ". Because we most of the time tell ourselves that we play games or watch something cuz we are bored... well there is enough to learn and explore in the real world. But hee not to be a hypocrite haha cuz I'm also a grinder and I wonder away behind a screen.

If its a real addiction they need professional help or they should just make a family member take there account away for some time
@pieismylove58755 жыл бұрын
No no no hahaha not for me. :) I was wondering if you would consider giving advice to other gamers out there who are maybe struggling with a runescape addiction and potentially give them the appropriate lead them to correct their chronic behaviours which they may resent. A lot of youtubers are criticising Jagex for their insensitivity towards addicts in relation to treasure hunter and their incapacity to at least impose limits on player spending. However, not many, if anyone really, seem to be offering advice to help such addicts in their pursuit towards behaviour change, addicts. Addicts which could very much be your own viewers. I know content creators may not withhold the expertise to do so, but you seem to have some knowledge on the process, based upon the comment you made to me. At the end of the day though, the discretion is yours and after all, this is a runescape channel. However, such a video will ultimately increase awareness on the topic of addiction, and also work to diminish the stigma around addiction in the runescape community, potentially leading to less gamblers who spend a lot of money in the game harshly being called ‘whales’ and other pejoratives for a habit which they may struggle with, and thus prevent behaviour change. Thank you. :) I also have a couple of questions to ask in relation to content creation, as I am interesting in starting to do so myself. Is there anyway I may contact you other than through KZbin?

I asked myself a question this morning........ What are my goals in runescape? And why I do want them? Currently I am doing birdhouse runs as often as possible. And crafting glass AFK. I want to be able to get the maximum amount of nests from birdhouse runs (That being my current goal). Why do I love doing birdhouse runs? Because I love the surprise I get from the seeds contained within the nests! What happens when I get the highest level birdhouse and the maximum amount of nests? I will do this every day to get more money and better items. What will I achieve after I do this continuously day after day? I will have to build my life around runescape and ultimately the goal means nothing. It is just a cycle of addiction. I get a dopamine hit every-time I search a birds nest and get a seed. I am addicted to birdhouse runs When I am an old man, will I look back on all these long stressful hours I played on runescape and say to myself, what great times? No I definitely would not. And runescape is definitely stressful. We are stressed when we don't have the items we want, quests we don't have done ect. The funny thing is, I am about to go and do another birdhouse run! But I know one thing. I am not paying for another runescape membership. Once that has run out. I am done. God bless, live life, make friends in real life and use your body the way it's meant to be used!

I take a lot of breaks from the game. Breaks ranging from two weeks to half a year. It's important to go play other things when you stop enjoying RuneScape. Addiction would be playing the game even though you don't really enjoy it, and that isn't good for a person. I've had to tell a lot of friends to take a break from the game when the fun stops. Edit: While you did stress that someone 'might' have an addiction if they answered yes to any of the questions, I think some of them are just bad tests. Prioritising RuneScape over other games can just mean that someone wants to play RS. There might not be any other games out there that they have an interest in. And feeling the need to log in being a sign of addiction when RS3 has daily keys to spend makes no sense. It's only natural to feel the need to spend 30 seconds to get some free items, items that could help someone the next time they decide to properly spend time playing. And some people have made great friends through RS and might want to log in every day to at least have a chat, which is a positive. Also using any type of media to distract yourself from whatever troubles you have is something everyone does. And while I'm not really a part of the efficiency crowd, trying to use your limited time in a subscription-based game wisely is sensible (though it can mean a lot of people avoid fun in-game activities they might enjoy more than mindless grinding).

I think the main reason Runescape is so addictive is because it's the only real game that you can afk, multi-task, and still make great progress without putting 100% of your attention into. I never play Runescape without multitasking. I also have a movie or shoe running, or listening to an audio book, cooking dinner, or cleaning the house. I could quit whenever I want, now that I'm maxed and close to comp, but I feel weird if I watch a movie and not have my account afking mining (165m xp in it), etc. I can't replicate that sense of freedom with other games. I literally play other games like fortnite while I afk train on my phone, while in bed (switch ftw). I've played since 2007, and have close to 7k hours in my main, and it's awesome. I don't think I'm addicted, because when I started working, it never felt different. I play when I want to, how I want to, and it's this sense of freedom that makes me play the damn game.

I believe when investing tons of hours into any MMORPG, you found your personal goals to be never ending. Whether it be getting that one cosmetic item that will complete your look, or getting your comp cape your "end game" is just a temporary goal that once achieved, will lose value to you over time, in which you just set sails onto the next goal, and from personally experience, I find that to be the fact with Runescape. So in short, yes it's addicting imo.

I'm not convinced the game itself is addictive. It just requires tons of time to achieve certain tasks, and with people being so driven and goal oriented, it all plays together. However whenever I play I definitely feel dependent on playing at least a little if not way too much. But that also could be an addictive personality

It is designed to be addictive bro. Their business model is getting as much people as possible hooked onto the game so they keep buying membership for years and years on end. The best way to accomplish this is to design it in such a way that you keep on wanting more and more and making sure your will come back to the game.

The only game I ever played was RuneScape and never got a console or anything. I stopped playing RuneScape because it became way more difficult. I’m looking to sell my account. It’s maxed and got lots of items and stuff. I answered no for most of these questions and I botted a lot on my account to reach my levels. I loved pking with dragon claws and tried to get back into it but I’m not feeling anymore. I haven’t bought memberships since like 2012. I used bonds I’ve played since 2009 off and on. Whenever I got on I would bot and go to school come back and play a bit. The new updates just make it seem like the communist Chinese mining company that owns Jagex is just milking it for as much profit before it ultimately dies. The economy is going to shit all over the world, playing a video game will soon be a privilege for some. I wouldn’t be surprised if the quality of updates and bugs lead the game to ultimate fail. For now I play clash of clans, you attack a bit and play the next day. Less work and you have fun and stuff. It’s free and no membership or anything unless you want to progress fast. Anyways I’m looking to sell my rs3 account. Pm or reply for more details.

Runescape is boring like no other, yet i still keep playing. I've falling asleep skilling a few times but keep playing. Ima say it is. Ive also been playing for over a decade too.

I think we shouldn't blame just RuneScape. Video games in general are addictive. The only reason people come back to RuneScape over and over is because it's an mmo and the continuous updates

hmmm, first time i play rs before 12 years and i play it for about 3 years then i got busy with my college , before two months my friend come and ask me do u remember rs and ur account i said yes , he told me open it lets see what u have , and this is was my big mistake , i come back playing rs everyday and i start calculating the exp and the money needed to get a certain lvl while i am eating , in yhe bathroom , or while driving and when i am sleeping. so i think the answer , i adore rs but i hate only some few things

I don't think the game itself is so much addictive, but people with addictive personalities gravitate towards games like runescape. And since runescape touches a nostalgic spot as well, it's easy for people to get enveloped in it.

do we even have to ask that question really? I mean it's not just addictive it is consciously made to be addictive. Every time you reach a goal your brain rewards you with dopamine. Why is cocaine addictive? because every time you do it you get a massive dopamine rush. Why is runescape addictive? well achieving goals and getting rewards is literally what the game is. Runescape is just an easier and faster version of real life. set a goal, work towards that goal, achieve goal, get rewarded and repeat.

It is not even fun anymore. I'm just constantly grinding my stats to get that dopamine rush, only to have it die off when I need to level up the next stat.

well not true addction is when something you hurt you and you keep doing it you can't watch a movie cos it's an escape you can't eat cos it relive you sometimes people need space if i'm on a quest and the member is about to stop and i don't play runescape i fell sad but if i have a membership i don't care if i play or not
@CookingWithJackDaniels5 жыл бұрын
Runescape in my opinion is no more addictive than any other good video game. Any game, especially open world, and especially role playing, is going to require a large time investment. I would say that RuneScape is consistently captivating and interesting rather than straight up addictive.

You physically need to sleep in order to live. The logic isn’t fully developed on this one, but the attempt is valiant.
