Honestly Russell and Sean just having different strengths, weaknesses, and personalities may have been why Sean just realized he would never have a contender with Wilson. Also, even not accounting for differences in the style of offense each wants to run, Sean seems like a guy who really holds guys accountable, and sometimes expects them to yell back at him to make them both better (something Nix seems to do perfectly). Russ seems like a guy who would just not really take Sean's coaching to personally (but would never dish anything back at Payton), and as a result neither would really grow from it. Tomlin is calm and collected like the current Russ is (even in scenarios where you see 90% of coaches yelling on the sidelines, Tomlin rarely losses his composure for example), and I think that makes those two such a perfect fit for each other, but Nix and Payton as well are such a perfect fit, and it has definitely made both teams stronger.

The difference between Russ in Denver and in Pittsburgh is that in Denver he had 1 coach that was terrible and another who wanted him to fail. In Pittsburgh he's got a coach that is not only a really good coach, but is using Russ in ways that Russ can succeed.

You can’t keep using the “he has a coach that wanted him to fail” excuse. No coach wants their QB to fail. For every good thing that Russ did last year, he made another mistake to lose a game and missed too many wide open receivers to count. Those mistakes are entirely on the QB, not the coach. It looks to me like Russ finally has his head on his shoulders. Sitting the first 6 weeks was probably the best thing for him.

@@viralbull8085 He's not actually washed, he's the same QB minus the mobility. Russ was always a systematic QB, run the ball, short passes to the flat, run the ball again and once in a while go for play action deep bombs. Having a great defense is needed so you don't have to change your approach on offense. The Steelers are basically running the Seahawks offense from the Pete Carroll days. What whet wrong in Denver was Russ wanted to be a Drew Brees when that not who he was.

Steelers struck gold. Not only do they have Russ who seems to be hitting a 2nd stride in his career, they also have Fields who showed he's more than capable of winning games if something happens to Russ. As a seahawks fan, let me clarify the last few years of Russell's tenure. Carroll stuck to his guns on the run game and defense. Unfortunately, the LOB were old, expensive and broken at this point. The oline was atrocious (like now) and had no run protection. Most of the series, the plays were run in the middle, no yardage, then it'd be 3rd and long. Where Wilson would have 1.5 seconds to throw. Led to him scrambling for his life and kicked off the 'Let Russ Cook' movement. Carroll and Wilson are now gone and Geno is always pressured or clobbered and throw picks. This is really on Schneider, who has failed for 10 years to get a proper oline. When I was watching the Steelers, it reminded me of the Seahawks of old.

Sean Payton was only interested in coaching a passing-dominated offense. Payton was just fine with Russ falling, and then drafting a QB that was exactly the kind Peyton wanted to coach.

Dude had 3 consecutive losing seasons in a row with Brees in his prime from 2014 to 2016 but somehow he's the savior for Broncos? He's on pace to have another 8-9 season this year with the Broncos schedule. Wheras, Russ will probably finish with the Steelers at 11-6 at minimum the way they playing.

This is something Ive been noticing a lot in sports recently (mostly a hockey fan but somewhat into most other sports as well) like rampant claims that somebody who was once great has fallen off and when they get traded away they have a crazy unexpected comeback. In a lot of these cases the player taking the blame usually hasnt fallen off as hard as their fans like to believe because the reality is that the team around them has done most of the hard work towards building a future where they are less competitive. When an elite guy has had an elite team around them for the longest time and eventually the bottom falls out thats gonna take a toll on them no matter how good they actually are. Then they get sent to a team where expectations arent as high and when they prove theyre still good at the game theyve been elite at their entire lives everyone acts so surprised. Im not anymore. Give the right players the right tools theyll make something out of it every time no matter what the expectations were.

Sean Payton doesn't get the criticism he deserves regarding the Russ situation. Coaches are supposed to put their players in a position to succeed. Not take a QB who built a HOF career on scrambling and improvising, and try to stuff him into a precise timing, pocket passing system. Then scapegoat him when it doesn't work.

Russell's first year in Denver, he had incompetent coaching over a bad team. No protection, always running for his life, and nobody to throw to that is open. Russell's second year in Denver, he had a terrible defense and a coach who hated his guts and got within a fumbled punt of dragging that awful team to the playoffs. His QB numbers were basically identical to Patrick Mahomes' numbers that year. Everyone in Seattle knew the same thing that Tomlin did. Which is not to say that the analysis presented about Russ was inaccurate or that he did not need to grow. But the talent was always there. On the plus side for Denver, I think Bo Nix will be about the same sort of player as John Elway, which is to say really good. He can run like the wind, like Elway. He can make good throws, like Elway. And he seems pretty smart, like Elway. He may not win two superbowls. But Denver has found an NFL quarterback that Payton likes and who is going to be pretty good.

They didn't even win both of their last 2 games when Russ was benched so I never understood why he gets the blame. Also, I hear people blame him for the 70 point game when he doesn't play defense. These people clearly don't understand team sports if you truly believe Russ was the only problem for Denver last year. His first year was bad and I never defend that one. But, people talk like he's coming off his first year with Denver instead of his second when he left.

Actually, the defense had a couple bad games, but they were actually pretty good for most of the year. Most people think it was Denver’s defense that gave them more than half the wins last year.
@RheemQ
@RheemQ 3 күн бұрын
@mikegarcia7452 Well, why didn't they do that after he was benched? I just find it funny how y'all keep trying to find ways to put everything wrong with Denver on Russ. They weren't doing anything before he got there but losing. I mean, let's be real. If Russell Wilson never went Denver. Would you even talk about them? They'd just be a middle of the roam team like the Cardinals that no one talks about. They get a couple of wins but aren't serious threats to any team. That's what they were. They only got coverage because Russ went like right now with Pittsburgh. Nobody was talking about Pittsburgh before he got there and they tried to start this little so called beef between him and Fields.

@@RheemQ nobody put the blame of the broncos all on Russ! He came to a bad situation and most of us fans wanted to see Wilson kick a$$. It was rough for Broncos because we couldn’t get the right coaching staff or a decent qb. Something that happens to all football teams at some point. Denver lost the last two games after Russ, because they were going for a qb in the draft and wouldn’t have gotten one if they won them games. Pretty easy to figure that out if you know a team needs a qb.

Russell Wilson and Arthur Smith are a match made in heaven. It's like Smith's offense was specifically designed for him. Payton prefers more of a Checkdown Charlie safe and efficient kind of guy and Hackett, well, it's right there in his name. Russ wasn't a scheme fit in Denver. Pittsburgh had already been building a team centered around pounding the rock, setting up play action, and leaning on the defense long before bringing Wilson in. Now we ride. Or smelt I guess. Whatever.

I watched him live against the Giants. Minus a late sack and a freak fumble, the Steelers offense actually look like 3rd and long isn’t an automatic out. He has touch on his long passes, something Pickett didn’t have the accuracy for and Fields has too much juice (which I believe can be taught). The way you describe Pete Carroll can go double for Mike Tomlin: leans on defense and the run. I think Tomlin (a Cowher clone really) is more comfortable controlling the game, not shooting teams out. Ben Roethlisberger lit up stats in the latter half of his career, but the games were erratic and he had to win. The Steelers won Super Bowls when there was balance. You didn’t have to have the ball last, but were prepared at QB if you did. The Steelers have a guy in Wilson you can trust…SB 51 not withstanding but better than a flawed Fields in terms of his arm.

I think one of the new stereotypes that should be along the lines of: Develop your young QB behind a vet for a few years, don’t bench your franchise QB unless you want to unload him from the roster, draft premium positions in early rounds, get your QB an O-line The new one should be to bring in a new head coach before you bring in a new QB and have to fire your coach after one year. I think you’re only one QB away if you have a coach that can create a winning culture in all phases of football that can carry the team before your QB has to and have a head coach who isn’t on the way out. Detroit did it with Goff and Campbell, LA did it Stafford and McVay, Mahomes and Reid, McDermott and Allen, Big Ben and Cowher, seemingly Quinn and Daniels, Stroud and Ryans, and finally Russ and Carroll. You can’t blame your QB failing if you follow the formula. Get your coach, culture, and team together before you get your QB. Idk what it is, but what I do know is a QB is going to fail in the league if his HC was fired within his first 2 seasons more often than not with mostly QB’s on rookie contract to Vet on new teams. (Sorry Jags, both NY teams, Miami, and soon to be bears… browns ur just bad). We rarely see established QB’s actually get better after acquiring a new HC, we mostly see them just leave elsewhere to get their production back up. Russ was innocent in Denver!!!

The highlight reels definitely like the old Russ magic from Seattle, and a big part of the reason why (the part Russ never understood) was how his highlights were so interspersed with great rushes. Both parts of the game need each other so much in a Russell Wilson offense, and both parts make the other part better.

@JBob08 I mean, Pittsburgh is in a better position having a veteran QB like Russ who could show a future franchise QB line Justin how to throw downfield and a great defense that just needed an equal offense to contend. But, I just don't see Denver being better off because they're still almost in the same situation but in another season or so i could see them having the pieces they need to be bigger contenders in the league. Nix isn't great but he isn't terrible either so they could have something with him. I personally they get rid of Payton and hire Bill for Denver but that's just me.
@JBob08
@JBob08 3 күн бұрын
@@RheemQ the attitude and culture of the Denver team this year is what I'm basing it off. Last year it never seemed like they thought they should be winning. It felt more like a race to bench Russ. Their record this season doesn't match just how much enthusiasm there is on that team right now and that can be a difference maker. It was clear Payton and Russ weren't going to gel, so the decision was ultimately the best choice for everyone and it seems like both teams are better for it.
