Having an ownership who listens to fans and build its roster around home grown players really shows alot about a team, which is why I really got into watching and attending FC Dallas matches. Wrexham shows the side of the sports most outsiders don't see, a loyal fan base. This is hard to find in the US with all the band wagon fans. Win or lose a team is only as strong as it's fan base. After watching the show I do hope it brings in more fans into the games, if the MLS team owners see how the leadership interacts with the fans at Wrexham, maybe they can learn from it a grow their team as well.

As a fan of 2 clubs, one in the city I have grown up with, Cliftonville in Belfast and Manchester United, I say yes. Few reasons, if you are a fan of a club similar to Wrexham or lower, you would embrace the opportunity to rise and lift your fortunes after decades of decline not only with the club, but with the town. Wrexham like so many working class towns in the UK and beyond has suffered, this has given it such a huge lift. As a Manchester United fan, I wish we had owners enthused, engaged, and positive about the club on and off the pitch as Reynolds and McElehenny. Instead they have lived in the shadows and taken the club to the brink. Of course, there is a balance, but if you are a Wrexham fan, you've been basically given the golden ticket. Would anyone refuse it?

Is the club improved? Are the supporters and the town energized? Is the level of play a lot more fun to watch? Does it get people turned into games they ordinariliy wouldn't care about? Then yes. It's that simple.

1st.. is Football !! 2nd ... Why would it be bad ?? That town has a history when it comes to Football so them getting involved there and actually caring about the community is CRAZY !!! I am from Italy and they won a fan, and not because of Ryan but because this is a small town with a small team that has a huge community behind it. Just watch the Disney show and you will see. 3rd. In Europe nothing is fair when it comes to football ... the big fish will always eat the small fish. It is all about the money and football is the biggest SPORT in the world by FAR so clearly you need people with money behind your team. Nothing moves more money and nothing moves more people than football ! No sport sparks more love and hatred at the same time ! If they can make Wrexham the new Leicester ...well... That would be mind blowing !!!

My very first thought was "have you nothing better to yammer on about?" I have never seen a Ryan Reynolds movie, nor have I watched "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia". Upon my 16yo son's recommendation we watched Welcome to Wrexham together and we are now stateside fans. Fans of the club but moreso fans of Wrexham proper. The town that bought their own club to rescue it and who, by divine grace, were then rescued by two well-meaning businessmen. The story they are telling is like Gonzaga's original Cinderella rise to the NCAA dance, Hoosier basketball . . . name any underdog story. This is Wrexham's Field of Dreams and in this broken world we all need something to cheer for. Lots of wealthy and famous people own sports teams. Ryan and Rob's combined talents and business acumen are putting Wrexham on a stage and I am here for it. Why else was my son's sophomore honors history class talking about the game? Why are we hoping to see Wrexham in Philly this summer? Why are Liam Roberts' real-time match recaps in the midst of my middle-aged, Hallmark movie heavy KZbin feed? Your click bait title "Is Ryan Reynolds involvement in Wrexham good for the sport of soccer?" is embarrassing for you. The question is "Is Wrexham good for the sport of soccer?" and the answer is a resounding yes!

Good for football here in the states. The "trendiness" of the Welcome to Wrexham show allowed a lot of Americans who don't unerstand football to get a glimpse of what it's all about. They got an education, along with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, about what the game is and the kind of passions it invokes in it's fans. The thrill of a game at the Racecourse with perhaps a few explanations of the offsides rule has converted more than a few Americans to the sport. They may end up wanting to go attend their local MLS game if they have one or if the opportunity arises, and that can't be a bad thing.

The only reason that Wrexham are in that nightmare division, is because they were deliberately ruined by two crooked businessmen who took over the club under false pretences & immediately set about destroying the club, both on and off the pitch, in order to put them out of business so they could then bulldoze the stadium and build on the land. They would've made a huge profit. Luckily they lost at the High Court in London. They stupidly appealed & lost again. They ultimately ended up out of pocket. But the club was all but destroyed. Players & staff were long gone & Wrexham plummeted down & out of the football league.

The Wrexham people are now excited and passionate about their team again, the local community had spent years funding the Wrexham team to keep it going. I thought America was meant to be the place of the free market? If MLS clubs were getting the TV numbers of the Wrexham show or games on ESPN, Networks would be giving that kind of coverage to MLS. The cold hard truth is Wrexham is something more than anything in American sports and that is their pull to American audiences. USA soccer has made the decision to mimic American franchise sport with no relegation and playoffs, which is maybe good for corporate Business but makes MLS no different any of the big leagues in America
@kwakerjak

It’s probably more accurate to say that that was the only way to convince American investors to spend the money needed to start MLS, which was one of the requirements FIFA set down to get the 1994 World Cup to come to the USA. There has never been *anything* like promotion and relegation in American sports dating all the way back to the mid-19th century, and the idea of a lower league being used for anything other than developing future players was probably considered to be too hard to sell to investors before FIFA’s deadline.

The problem with US/MLS soccer is how non-organic and artificial MLS investment and growth has been. To use Lalas' own words, the MLS has done nothing but try "to use this (MLS corporate franchises) as a vehicle to increase the value of this property they have". Lalas, as usual, is full of it.

@@Andre8686 There’s something very organic about the connection between Wrexham FC and the town/city of Wrexham. There’s a bond there that’s fascinating to people outside of Wrexham. A big point missed as to why Wrexham hits home for so many is that their supporters (similar to every EFL/English club) are working class. The show paints the picture very clear that their loyal supporters are working tough, rugged jobs and that Wrexham is their escape from it all. MLS is a middle to upper class league, based on its supporters paying $50+ for tickets, $20 for parking and $15 for nachos at the concession stands. I've been to Prem matches in person for half of what it cost for me to see my local MLS side play. It's not to say working class individuals don't watch/attend MLS matches but everything from the kits costing $100+ to the marketing suggest it's rather a rich mans, not poor mans sport

That being said, if Wrexham had not been an underdog story the Fandom would not have been as meteoric. The club and owners appeal to the common man I.e. Pittsburgh Steelers in the 70s. MLS defiantly does not do that. In my never have played or watched soccer opinion MLS markets to a specific group in America. My wife and I watch and understand (mostly) soccer now and love it. I have watched this clip three times now. I still don’t understand Alexi Lalas’ point. I’ll try and give it a shot in terms of what I think he should’ve said based on what I think he was saying. First, ESPN is in itself a business. And ultimately they are going to do what is best for ESPN. The Welcome to Wrexham docu-series, although shown on Hulu and FX in the US, is shown on the Disney+ streaming service in most of the rest of the world. ESPN is owned by Disney. Disney+ is owned by Disney. Now, given the popularity of Welcome to Wrexham, and the higher than expected ratings that the early round FA cup games involving Wrexham received, it should be no surprise to anyone that ESPN is not only showing Wrexham‘s subsequent FA cup games, but also promoting them as well. For both the Coventry match in the last round and the Sheffield United match a few days ago, Wrexham were going into each of those games as underdogs and we all know how much an American audience in particular loves an underdog story, a David meets Goliath and David beats Goliath story. Which is to say, that much of the hype around Wrexham has less to do with soccer/football and more to do with a compelling story that suits the American television audience perfectly. In my opinion, this can only be positive for MLS. ESPN are not stupid. They are going to look at ways to translate what is happening at Wrexham and the ratings that they are getting for Wrexham‘s FA cup games and look for ways to apply it to MLS. NBC Sports, ESPN and Fox, and to a lesser extent CBS, through its streaming asset, Paramount+, have done a very good job in terms of taking responsibility to grow the game in the US with their coverage of European Football, both the men’s and women’s national teams and in particular Fox’s coverage of the World Cup a few months ago. So, I would argue, that we should be more focused on consuming and celebrating all of this amazing soccer/football content on television and streaming on the Internet and less focused on criticizing what the soccer/football, gods have given us.

Yes they're good for soccer. What's NOT good for soccer is the insular atmosphere of a league like the MLS. The only jeopardy for the owners of MLS teams is whether they turn a profit, and how much of a profit they make. US Soccer and MLS need to enter into discussion ASAP with USL and other American leagues to develop a similar tiered system of promotion and relegation. The MLS clubs are now well established, it's time to allow other teams scraping by in the USL to take a bite of the pie, not just in the Hunt Cup, but the top league exposure, season long.

American football fans are going to get a taste of jeapoardy in the sport through Wrexham, and their journey through the English football pyramid. That is a good thing for American sports and its limited closed shop approach to "competition" without relegation and a meaningful league structure. Re Wrexham having financial clout - they'll be tied to EFL fair play spending rules when they get promoted. They don't have super rich owners for where they want to get to, so growing a fan base (and the commercial opportunities that brings) will be their way of competing. And actually it's incredibly unique for a relatively small club to have a large global fanbase at their level, and the fans will get to be part of that unique experience - which in itself will add to the attraction. In summary, there are no real negatives to the Wrexham story, and if a british non league football team is causing consternatuon in American "soccer" (with all its millions $$$), there is probably a very good reason for that... And ultimatley, wrexham's journey up the pyramid will be mirrored (and has been previously mirrored) by others. Look at Saltford, Swansea, Bournemouth, Luton etc. Or Oldham for the reverse. Pick a club and enjoy! If it brings more exposure to smaller clubs then that is great news also!

To buy a lower level team here in the USA is useless .. it's not organized, it's chaotic at best and no way to improve and grow it to give fans something to look forward to. Something else can come along and replace a league in a day now and make it useless.

Wait, so MLS is now complaining about the exact same things women players have been dealing with for years? And women players don't even flop like a bunch of crybabies. I love it.

Number 1 it's FOOTBALL not SOCCER. You know very little if anything about football, the wrong way to own a football club can be exemplified by the Glazers (Americans) ownership of Manchester United or FSG's ownership of Liverpool, these guys are giving a leg up to a non football league team, yes they will sell at some point, but what you don't realise is that they bought it for a peppercorn rate, so there are lots of $ to be made.

"The wrong way". Nevermind that Liverpool won a CL and the premiere league. So tell me, what's the "right way"? Is it like Ryan Reynolds trying to cash in on streaming deals and kickbacks?

ESPN is owned by Disney who also owns fox and fx....and thus promoting their own product is what Disney is doing with ESPN and wrexham.

its obvious this guy does not have a clue on how footbal is in europe lolz, 1000s of clubs had millions invested and came nowwhere. wrexham is the examption, especially with these 2 dedicated lads, they will change not only rexham, but the whole top of the footbal structure for many years to come. more clubs will be taken over by " rich people" BUT they will not be oil sjeiks anymore, more and more you will see people spending with a heart for footbal, not for the money.

Depends, so far they are doing it right. As for not doing it in America, i see why not. America doesn't have the history, culture and passion as we do. Yes they might love the game and say they are passionate but when you compare it's like night and day. Watching American fans at a game is like watching a cringeworthingly bad comedy, 10/10 for effort but please, there's no comparison. Definitely not good enough for a docu series that's for sure.

My word the guy was talking a load of rubbish he does not understand how a football club has invigorated and brought life to Wrexham thanks to Rob and Ryan .

What is Alexi talking about, Wrexham is not about promoting a league structure or criticising other leagues. Problem with Alexi is he has a inferiority complex in respect of US soccer and projects it even when not relevant or applicable. Very odd.

Yeah good for football as it has really struggled over the last 150 years. Its a circus and to be honest not that interesting, besides what they are trying to do is being done right now, Luton Town are one game away from promotion to the premier league, they were relegated from the old 1st division and went down the divisions untill they dropped out the professiobal leagues. They have now over the last 9 years got back in the professional league and are only one match away, what a story!! Alexis really has nothing interesting or insightful to say about soccer, not a thing!!!

I enjoy lower league soccer such as in The National League because the style of play is much faster and they don't have VAR that slows the game down. Btw, a lot of these guys are out there killing themselves making peanuts compared to higher leagues. They truly love the game. Just one more reason, I watch.
