That is a good point, but his Mum doesn't look well. I though she looked really stressed. I wonder what her worst-case scenario looks like as she tries to fall asleep at night, perhaps that's why she looks ill. It isn't like children would lie to their parents to impress them, is it? He may have totally gaslighted both of them. He seems to be capable of detached thinking. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens, the enormous amount of money stolen should be an aggravating factor with punch when it comes to sentencing. They should throw the book at sam and for their help the others should only have to serve five years less than sam, as a thank you to his fellow thieves.

It appears as if his parents were much more involved in the business than was clear at the time of the collapse. I would bet that he was exploited by his parents to some extent and maybe a lot based on this new information. Certainly no excuse for anything he did but it's an absolute shame that his folks are looking likely to be every bit the scoundrel Sam is. It makes me feel sorry for him if he was brought up by soulless self-servers...

Entrepreneurial spirit is 1 thing, but being willfully negligent, or not giving a damn about financial responsibility to customers, lenders and investors, is another. It's up to a Court, a Judge and a Jury to decide wether SBF is a criminal or not. ATM all the evidence presented, together with his actions since Alameda and FTX were founded, points towards multiple guilty verdicts. I am interested in hearing how his Defence will present its arguments because it looks like they're up against it.

The defense has already tipped their hand. Sam setup the auto delete for internal communications so there is very little left of his communications. So he going to say Caroline did these things without his knowledge. They've made the analogy that FTX was like building a plane while it was flying.

BTW, I don't believe the defense, I'm just pointing it out. From a legal stand point having documents of the actual communications is stronger evidence than Caroline's word when they have a vested interest. Even though she has screen caps of their chats, it's only for the last couple of weeks before the collapse. The borrowing of client funds started happening years before. I honestly think he is a little off his rocker for not fleeing before he was ever arrested to a non-extradition country or even if he made the mistake of not doing that, which he did, working out a plea deal before it got this far. At least try to go for 5 to 7 years because when he loses this trial he's looking at 20 to life

I don't think he's a sociopath. I think he grew up in and environment that was a nexus of high level politics, legal "ethics," money, and image. It shaped his actions - funneling cash to politicians, using lawyers to justify anything he did, and playing up to an unquestioning and fawning media. I think, in his mind, he was doing all the right things that would protect and insulate him from any personal responsibility for his actions. He even had a marketing strategy - "effective altruism" - that was swallowed whole and praised by all. It was just the way things worked the rarified atmosphere his parents exposed him to and reinforced.

Defense said something about am having ADHD, and this is one of the symptoms - lowered empathy in certain situations. Not lack of empathy, but experiencing it differently depending on situation. Another thing is, that ADHD people have serious problem with foresight, planning and learning from mistakes. We live in NOW, we do what we are focused on in that second, we react to reality, we continue. Little is learned in terms of life wisdom, little is planned for the future. They might burn themselves with that ADHD angle, for sure I don't want to be compared to criminal. He is in my opinion a type of obsessive dork-nerd, who will do anything to continue his project and prove he is right. His life and finances don't matter when the thing is going, so why would other matter? In my opinion he created backdoor as a way to hack the system and make his project go more smoothly without thinking deeply about consequences. I think to understand this type of person you can imagine a kid who overclocks and destroys his pricy PC, or that Boy Scout who build homemade neutron source at the age of seventeen because he was very enthusiastic about nuclear reactors.

SBF is a sociopath. Defence would prefer to say he has ADHD than being a Sociopath for obvious reasons. I don't say that to be insulting to him, its just based on his own description of himself. From Going Infinite - "In a lot of ways I don’t really have a soul,” he wrote. “My feelings are fake, my facial reactions are fake. I don’t feel happiness". If you study psychology this his how a sociopath would describe themselves. He notoriously had trouble connecting with anybody. If you don't have any empathy for other people then there is a high probability of ripping people off when the opportunity arises. If you don't have empathy then you don't feel guilt. If you don't feel guilty then there is no downside to ripping people off.
@emceha

@@markharmon3020 That description also describes serious side effects of ADHD stimulant meds lik Ritalin, it turns you into a zombie robot. You can finally function, but you feel like all emotions are surpressed to zero. I had the same problem when I took SSRI together with street speed. Also, I know definitions are not that important, but sociopath and psychopath are kinda different, sociopath is more anti society rules, they are often violent, abuse people and law openly and don't care about anything. Psychopats understand rules and can control themselves, they just don't feel empathy towards oters. Smart psychopats are your ruthless CEO type.

@@markharmon3020 That quote from Going Infinite is damning. To him, backdoors and legal requirements would all just be abstractions with a probability associated with them. His judgement had paid off so well in the past that it's easy to see him just resting on that but then building something too complex to probabilistically evaluate. His risk indicator became divorced from reality (which even happens in the SEC) and now he has to pay the price for skirting legal requirements (probably felt that the ROI on following them at the time was too low). I don't think he was trying to fuck anyone over, but he stopped paying attention to his downside and probably didn't realize he was walking along a 100 year jail sentence abyss if his FTT value dropped. Honestly it feels like there's obvious startup mentality at work here and this is what happens when you take that mentality in its pure form to the financial sector.

It seems Sam deluded himself into thinking the law doesn't apply to him. He had a devil-may-care attitude toward his customers, equating them with "muppets" and calling them "dumb motherfvckers". One reason his mother has that perma-scowl could be that she's worried they're coming after her and Joe next, not to mention Sam's legal bills which must be astronomical by now. Sam is broke, so who's going to pay his lawyers? It may be that Barbara Fried is beginning to realize she raised a monster, now a convicted felon, as she scowls from behind her sunglasses. Our coddled boy genius from Stanford with the moppy hair and cargo shorts is looking at decades of confinement. He likely won't have 24/7 Internet access in the slammer and that will drive him mad. If you're going to throw around psychological diagnoses, you begin by considering the DSM reference to see the criteria for the particular issue you have in mind. Sociopaths cannot properly feel the suffering of others. SBF doesn't show the criteria for sociopathy because he can empathize with others at a personal level. He is, however, a Machiavellian character in that as things go wrong, he is willing to break the rules and the law to generate feelings of reward and resources for philanthropy and lifestyle. He was also in denial about his crimes and motivated by greed, albeit with a philanthropic intention, doing too much, too fast.
@TheJohnnyCalifornia
@TheJohnnyCalifornia Жыл бұрын
Perhaps, like Elizabeth Holmes, this is more a case of a person with some sociopathic tendencies committing crimes more than that they are a "criminal sociopath" in the sense that the crimes were not the intent of the activity - such as was the case with Bernie Madoff who probably was more an actual criminal sociopath. I think the differences between the various scams are interesting. Madoff knew he was committing a ponzi scheme and had no remorse or regret. Holmes knew she was lying but believed eventually the tech would work. SBF probably knew that his company was committing criminal activities and that even that they were potentially fraudulent, but thought eventually he would be able to pay everything off and balance the hidden losses. At heart, I think there is a problem in that there is a general utilitarian and libertarian philosophy involved in both traditional and emerging financial institutions, companies and new products. This leads to decisions that ignore legality and degrade regulatory oversight. If anything, these show that there is a problem with the systems that are intended to prevent people from committing these crimes and also make it very difficult to properly understand what crimes were committed even when they get caught.

I think SBK's parents are setting him up worst case to be the Fall Guy so they get more leniency with respect to their liability...Very Utilitarian. In the case of 3 Mountain Climbers holding onto a Rope that can only support the weight of 2 climbers, a Utilitarian would Cut the Rope on the Guy holding onto the end of the climbing rope so that the 2 climbers holding the rope above the Guy at the End of the rope can Survive. Save 2 Lives by Killing 1 Guy Rather than All 3 Climbers Perishing.

I'm tempted to think it possible that they deliberately 'used' him to commit fraud. You may recall that FTX/SBF hired "the lawyer" [I think his dad may have even recommended him] that was found to have cheated big-time in an online gambling circuit by having access to their (the bsns. he was a part of) customers cards And then his mom swindling all that money for political donations via SBF and at least one more employee of FTX or Alameda. His dad hovered over the company at all times. Ellisons's dad was indirectly connected to the SEC as well and all those circles are small - political - govt - etc.
