One other safety precaution is to be mindful of icicles and snow falls from he roofs (so no walking too close to buildings and occasionally looking up). It might sound strange for foreigners but it is rather serious. Also for some reason not all foreign bloggers think a hat is a must in winter Russia but it absolutely is.

Moscow/SPB, yes. Rest of Russia, hell no. Russia has a higher murder rate than the US and is like 6x higher than the UK. Lots of gopniks, gangs and aggressive hooligan drunks everywhere in provincial Russia and some neighborhoods of Moscow/SPB.

In 2014 were an Olympic Games in Cochi. As today ten years ago in Russia was peaceful and safe too. And I say more, before untirussain maidan we used to visit Ukrain as friendly neighbors. Now a lot of Ukrainian try to lie to foreigners about Russia unfortunately like CNN 😂 in past Russian people travel a lot of Europe countries. I was in Spane and Italy. It was cheep for me without sanctions. But today I’ll better visit Russian cities, because our touristy areas have great investments. Pease and welcome to Russia 🇷🇺

Yes I moved to Ukraine in 2011,at that time there were direct flights between Russia and Ukraine, and there wasn't too much anti Russian sentiment apart from in Western Ukraine. It's a shame, I would like to go back to that time.

@@TallTravels My husband is from western Ukraine. His parents (my in-laws) live in Russia, but many close relatives remained in Ukraine. They’re boned in Soviet when both countries were one. Previously, my husband's family spent every summer in a village in western Ukraine. Until 2018. Then it became very difficult to go there. It's such a pity that politics divides relatives.

Aleksiy Uminsky a priest in Russia is facing expulsion from the church for not praying to God for the Russian war against Ukraine. Uminsky has been the most recent victim of the Kirill insistence upon aggressive religious attitude against a sovereign country.Uminskiy is renowned for hospice work for dying children and adults. He says that the language of war and the "special military operation" was in no way compatible with church liturgy. Pray more for peace than for victory are his beliefs. The prayer he was ordered to read has not been considered and approved by the highest body of the church. The Holy Synod. Orthodox believers have signed an open letter in support of Aleksiy after he was replaced by Andrei Tkachov, one of Kirills men. They say this is a great tragedy for many believers, for hospice patients, hundreds of prisoners and thousands of homeless people.
@gerteer383210 ай бұрын
You wrote only one part of the truth about the priest Uminsky-and forgot about the other!-- for example, in December 2010, he spoke in support of Mikhail Khodorkovsky - At the same time, in December 2010, Uminsky accused the Church of ... non-participation in politics. Moreover, it is in opposition politics, actually declaring that it must oppose itself to the government and "protect the people" from it. He repeatedly spoke in support of provocateurs from the "Pussy Riot" who rode in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. ---- Uminsky is a negative example of how a priest engages in politics!!

I suspect you were being sarcastic and hyperbolic in your claims of danger outside the center of the city or the cars cashing off the road. Really. You never seen it have you? The Yandex Go taxi are doggy cars? You made that up also. The homeless.....you never saw homeless, but there are a few drunks who hang out near metro stations but overall the drinking rates are lower than the per capita consumption of EU, 1/2 the rate and 1/3rd of a few EU countries. Beer and wine replaced spirits long about as the common drinks. What outlaying area is dangerous, you suggested the sleeping districts were. You never saw that did you? The city has has vey little snow this winter and so budgets for snow removal were lowered so the city warmed up and the little snow there was, melted, then a freezing spell of a few days resulted in icy sidewalks, With proper shoes even that is not a problem. The weather patterns have changed a lot, all before 2010, winters were long and cold but the city is set up for it and every building is warm. But suddenly every year since 2010, winters have been shorter and much less snow, such that ice fishing which used to be so popular was no longer safe, and most of the winters were mild as this recent fall has been. The pot case was she was carrying enough for her entire team and did not cooperate with airport security. It was not just one little personal container. I think you distorted the facts, maybe to be cute or sarcastic but those who have not been in Russia, will assume their media is right. There is NO place in London were it is safer than St Petersburg, maybe you are used to seeing filthy streets and crime there but you did not see it in St Petersburg. It is good to have insurance to get back home if falling and breaking legs but medical attention would be free. Any emergency is free. Sure things were less secure in the 1990s after the US forced sudden privatization of all state assets that created the criminal Oligarch class, most of whom were given instant citizenship in the US or UK if they brought their stolen money. That is when the economy collapsed, not when the USSR ended. Russia was still a relatively rich country and everyone was getting paid, all services are still active. The only warning that is needed for a visit is bring uncerculated 100 euro or US dollar notes and exchange them at the specialty exchange banks such as Avengard Bank that gives very good exchange rates, to convert to rubles and open a bank account at one of the banks that issues debt cards on the spot such as SperBank (СберБанк). That debt card, MIR card , is good for any sort of purchases, even the metro(subways) or buses. Then leaving drain the account and take the Rubles to Avangard Bank and exchange them for your home country notes. but keep enough Rubles for the subway and bus to the airport. Don't exchange currency at the airports, in any country, you will get a bad exchange rate. Any marks, even the slightest defect on a bill will not be exchanged for good rates and only some tourist exchange offices that give poor rates with take worn bills. So before the trip ask your bank to save pristine notes for you. The larger the bank the more common that request is honored, Without a doubt, St Petersburg and Moscow are safer and lower cost to visit than any country in Europe now and certainly the US and UK, it is easy to get around cheaply, cost of food and entrances to museums are good deals, and all the drama theaters and many opera, ballet and symphonic music venues are reasonable. The last time I was in New York, my GF mentioned seeing a sign for an opera we both like and the tickets were $1600 for two at the MET for a lower grade performance, sets, acoustics etc than a dozen more elegant historic halls in St Petersburg that, when we pay is $20-30. Tickets for live theater, 238 theaters within walking distance of my apartment, are usually $13-15 which in New York is $150-300 each. You can walk through any neighborhood, a lone, or in any of the 600 parks and be perfectly safe, at 3am. For most foreigners from the west, it takes a little while to stop being fearful and cautious like they have to be back home. Once that peace and security is accepted they relax and really feel the freedom of movement they do not have at home. Go into any club, cafe, pub, restaurant and you will make friends if you interact at all, people will be curious but they are frequent travelers have something in common to talk about. Males who are used to the hostility between the 67 genders limits interaction but here there are only two genders, and both like each other so if you are polite and have something interesting to say, you can meet anyone and have a positive response and friendly conversation. It is a very social city due to the lack of conflict between the sexes. One of the most common questions first time visitors have is "where is all the bad stuff we hear about from news" and 3-4 days into their visit the question is "How do I move here?"
@TallTravels10 ай бұрын
Saint Petersburg is very safe, but I would not want any daughter of mine walking around at 3am in some park in a poorer region of the city, anyone who walks around thinking it's completely safe is a fool. Don't believe me? Then check out some news articles in Telegram channels and other websites about rapes and robberies. I did not say they were 'dangerous' stop twisting what I said. Locals will tell you the same, watch out for the cheapest taxis in Russia as they are poorly maintained, and can have some very sketchy drivers. That's just plain common sense. If you want to save $1 and ride around in the Russian equivalent of chitty chitty bang bang with some nut case from the Chechnya then good for you. Again, you are talking nonsense about the weather, this winter has been one of the snowiest and coldest on record. Almost any fool knows not to exchange money at the airports. You sound like one of these foreigners who came here and put Russian life on a pedestal, and say that everything is crap back home in the West, and Russia is better in every regard. Try telling that to your $2 Yandex taxi driver, i'm sure he'll agree with you 100%. 'Lack of conflict between the sexes' 🤣🤣😂 That's the best one, go and take a look at the domestic violence statistics for Russia and get back to me. You have your head up your backside.
