Is she ready for the River? | Anderton Boat Lift | River Weaver [Ep 151]

This week I get my Narrowboat river ready to leave the safety of the Trent and Mersey Canal and go down on the Anderton Boat Lift to the River Weaver for an appointment for my sea worthy certificate to enable future passage onto the Manchester Ship Canal. I have a friend onboard to join me on the amazing Boat lift as he had never been on it before and then I single hand the rest of the river journey and head through Saltersford and Dutton Locks.

I cannot believe you didn't make a joke about cleaning your fifthly ring, anyway, as a kid we did a big trip on the canals visiting the Manchester bit in the 70's. 20+ kids in bunks on two barges, it was fun. As my yacht has a Spanish flag I have to get it MOT'd every 5 years, so this is a year with lots of small jobs to get it ready, then maybe sail over to the UK for a mini trip if the weather is OK. Since you returned, Barcelona is 10 C at night and 20 C in the day time, with mostly a clear sky and calm seas. Which of course made me smile when you mentioned the waves lapping on your hull, my yacht is aluminium, it can be really noisy! 😂

Where you're boating on calm waters, a section of anchor chain between the anchor rope (aka anchor rode) and anchor is not essential. The role of the chain is to lay flat on the bottom between the anchor and the rope to act as a shock absorber or damper as the boat rises and falls over waves. The first bit of the chain gets picked up and dropped back with each wave going under the boat but the rest of the chain lays flat cushioning the pull so the boat doesn't jerk the anchor up with each wave. If you are in waves big enough to bob a narrowboat, you probably have bigger issues to worry about than a chain on your anchor. With your Danforth anchor, since you've got a good long rope for fairly shallow water, you can let out lots of rope (rode) to flatten the angle of the rope to the anchor, laying the anchor flat on the bottom. Since the shank pivots, it can rise and fall a bit if the boat moves but the flukes can stay angled down to dig in to hold the boat. The Rum Wench has a fair turn of speed when you give her a kick, that's a lot of boat to push along through the water!

You really do need a decent length of chain on the anchor. You can use a mix of rope (called an anchor warp) and chain, to reduce the overall weight and ease storage, but it's extremely important to have chain to ensure the anchor gets a good bite. The weight of the chain holds the shaft of the anchor horizontal, letting the anchor dig in properly, and additionally provides some friction against the ground. Without chain, there is a tendency for the anchor shaft to be pulled upwards as the load comes on, which vastly reduces the effectiveness of the anchor. Rope alone will generally not work well for a heavy boat and/or a strong flow of water/wind. If you absolutely must use only a rope, it needs to be very long, so that the anchor shaft is kept as flat as possible once the boat is pulling on it.

😂😂 that anchor was so heavy 😂 I was trying to find the best way to put it without it falling over when I hit the bank …. My boat flies on the river with her big propellor 😃 not sure on speed but about 5-6 mph 🏴‍☠️
