Nobody asked for it but my take on expired film is about the same as film, digital, lenses or any other medium related consideration - if the most interesting thing about your picture is what it was made with, that's something to be concerned about. The portraits in the trailer park are excellent portraits regardless of the medium - the medium doesn't matter because the pictures are great in their composition, lighting, model and her interaction with the photographer, all the stuff that really matters so we're not distracted by what film it was shot on and whether it was expired or not. Good pictures are good pictures regardless of the medium.

i think it’s very cool to see what people can do with different equipment and films and such but if you get to involved into all of the little things and not so much the thought and passion in the photo then the photo loses its shine

Love the overall vibe of this video. I’m personally just getting into shooting film and figuring things out. I've not shot expired film but I've seen a lot of good results from the more skilled photographers. Best line ever when he saw the refection in the poodle “am I actually a photographer bro?” lol! btw Detroit always reminds me of a photography book I came across. I highly recommend “Detroit Disassembled” by Andrew Moore. The Photographs in that book are amazing.

The price for expired film is way too hyped rn. Thats the only justification on why you shouldn't "waste" money on expired film. We used to be able to buy discontinued and expired film by bulk on the cheap. Now bunch of hipster kids and youtuber just hype up the price and we cant get them for fair price anymore. If not because of that, expired film is almost a must when shooting film stock thats no longer in production.
@housemusic3253 жыл бұрын
For me it's easy to understand why expired films are overrated : - expired film cost more than equivalent fresh film - expired film can have been stored like trash and give bad result - expired film don't give any money to the manufacturer who struggle to survive since digital era. - expired film is not a reliable way to test older discontinued film stock because they are unpredictable. - expired film is harder to develop, my lab don't develop it at all... Why expired film is cool : - expired film is more challenging to shoot - expired film can give weird result that look good - expired film can be sometimes cheaper - expired film give you the ability to test older film stock if stored in a fridge or freezer Personally I don't do expired film so much, I've tried some of them and for me, it's bad to feel that the film in your camera cannot shoot anything serious because of the unpredictable behavior of the emulsion...

I recently shot 2 120 rolls of Ilford HP 5 Plus 400. Those rolls expired in July 1996 but they had been in my fridge all that time. I just got a medium format camera so what better way to test the camera and the film. One roll came out with half of the roll blank but the rest was good. The 2nd roll all the shots came out. I rated the 400 speed film at 100 to make up for the age. 27 years is a long time for film to sit in a fridge. I would never use expired film for anything important.

Dope video as always. Sending love from Romania. Expired film is expired film. Personally, I truly believe that there are three factors that can affect the result: ISO value (the lower the better for expired film), how it was stored (if it was stored improperly it's gonna be a bummer) and how old the film is. I like how you just measured and took chances with the expired film. This is what film photography is all about. In addition like someone said in the comments "composition, lighting, model..." ... the rest is just can-can. Keep up. Love the video again !

Oh no that reflection would have been sooooo good! I can't judge though since as a film photographer, I haven't shot any basketball hoop reflections and I haven't even shot any laundry mats! I have shot a few derelict gas stations though...(but not on Cinestill). Anyways! I'm with you on expired film. Well actually I'm both. I miss the color palette of some of the old stocks (like Portra NC/VC) and got pretty ok results with I used them. But I'd prefer that we simply had Portra NC or VC still available to buy fresh. And likewise, the love of expired stocks can be a real bummer when you need to find cheap film to do test exposures. Especially in large format... So yeah I like them. I don't love them. I wouldn't pay much for expired stock. But for the ones I've been gifted, they have been a real treat!

for me when I buy cameras from people getting rid of their film cameras. I always get a couple rolls of expired film that they never used. That gets me stuck with expired film. by any means I don't mind expired film but I prefer to buy fresh film so I know what I'm getting out of the rolls.

there's no such thing as expired film as much as there's mishandled film. I've gotten results from Kodak gold that was sitting in a camera bag in an attic for 20 years. I would't use it for paying gigs that's for sure but for experimenting and all around shooting, why not!

I think a lot of things film related are highly fetishized, to the point of people thinking certain gear is imbued with magic. Disregarding the fact that commercial film photography existed for the bulk of a century, advancing with every decade. Given how things evolve, the expensive 1970's lens is probably no better than the late 1990's entry level lens. Same with camera bodies and the likes.
