Had Smallville been a show that ended after 4 or 5 seasons, the whole 'no cape and no flight' rule the showrunners and Tom Welling agreed upon wouldn't have been a problem. However, since the show went on for so long and become more like the Superman we know (they basically even set up a Justice League), it made less and less sense not to put him in the suit. Welling and the writers should have given in and made it a full fledged Superman show during those last few seasons.

I feel Smallville can be split into 3 shows seasons 1-4 the high school "teen drama" with comic book elements seasons 5-7 out of high school, becoming more of the "comic book origin" show by introducing Superman characters and story arcs as well as finally putting the characters on their destined paths seasons 8-10 were probably the closest thing to a "Superman" type of show we got but without the suit. We got Doomsday, Zod, Darkseid etc. Clark also worked at the daily planet and had an alter-ego. Lex while not always shown still had a strong background presence as being involved with everything. My personal season ranking would be as follows: 3,2,9,5,10,7,8,6,4,1. 1 is last because the constant "freak of the week" episodes became redundant.

The creators of Smallville said because it was a prequel show Clark would never fly or wear the suit. I think the problem with that is with a show that lasts for a decade you want some big pay off. You spend all this time watching Clark grow and become Superman so you will want to see how he acts as Superman in that world. Ideally if the series finale was the season finale for season 9 and season 10 was all Superman then the show would have ended on such a high note. Imagine an entire season of Smallville where the John Williams theme is played every time Superman shows up.

I just finished Smallville last week. Even though I knew he wasn’t gonna wear the suit the show was amazing! It’s a really good show and all the characters were written to what the writers wanted us to feel towards those characters. In The Flash the characters are annoying and the writers try to make us care for Iris and the rest of “team flash” but they come off as boring and like I said ANNOYING!

I really really strongly disagree with this statement, Smallville season 10 are 1 of the best seasons in the whole series. Erica Durance & Tom Welling finally gets together with Lois Lane knowing his secret & they have an amazing romance. There chemistry are fantastic!! We gets darkseid & Lionel Luther comes back. Also Jonathan comes back. Many of the episodes are so cool & well made. Smallville was never never never never!! about him being in the superman costume, it's his life before being superman, when he was a teenager & then become the Blur. There are already a TV Serie about Superman, it's called Lois & Clark 1993-1997 staring Dean Cain as Superman. Watch that TV Serie if you want to see Clark Kent as Superman.

See, here's the thing: when I was watching the show as a teenager, I was of the same opinion; that the show started a sharp decline around Season 3 and it never recovered. But I actually re-watched the whole show a few months back, a much older man now, and my opinion has entirely flipped. The first seven seasons were a chore to sit through this time around (with the exception of certain episodes). The teen drama, angsty BS with the massive liberties with the mythos were really hard to sit through. Seasons 8-10, on the other hand, were a blast. Effectively, once Gough and Millar left, the show turned into a full-on Superman show, minus the name and the suit. The last three seasons went out of their way to undo every massive, sloppy liberty the previous showrunners had taken, which sucks if you liked Smallville before, but really, really doesn't suck if you hated what they had done. Clark was acting more like Superman, he was more confident, he had a healthy relationship with Lois (unlike that... other one) and Tess had a better arc than Lex and provided a nice contrast. Of course it should be noted that I was always watching Smallville *because* I'm a Superman fan, not the other way around. So my take on this will probably different than anyone who grew up on the show first and foremost.

I loved everything up until the finale and no physical darkseid or welling in the suit is the only problem I had with the show and welling made it worse by the only way he would return in the crisis crossover is if he was depowered which both did and didnt make sense since Clark spent the whole show whining about his powers and being normal until they got taken away then he had to get them back and him being depowered 10 years after the finale was a huge step backwards from Clark accepting who he was and ment to be! I thought it was funny how everyone was so excited to finally see welling in the suit for crisis and every video and article talking about I was saying the whole time since his announcement for crisis "these fuckers actually think welling is going to put on the suit... that's crazy!" Welling is from the time when people still got made fun of for liking comics, action figures or nerd culture in general, he's the type that if he played video games he only played sports games and that's it!

I was curious about this, since I bought every season on DVD, and when I finally saw the final season, I eventually ended up donating all ten seasons to Goodwill, knowing I'd never watch the show again. I always liked, but I don't know that I ever actually loved, the show. The first season was all episode-of-the-week, and then it felt like the creators were trying to create fluid storylines but there was still too much making it up as they went along. Yet it was engaging enough (mainly because of Tom and Kristin) to keep me watching for literally a decade. With that said, I do remember that the creators said long before the show even premiered that the underlying motto was "no flights, no tights". I never heard your theory about Tom wanting to avoid some superstition that was always more hype than reality. So although I didn't remember that he never wore the cape, it doesn't surprise me. However, I can't agree with you more on the betrayal of the world building. There was no reason whatsoever that they needed to reset or reboot the series to fit into continuity. Just call it an Elseworlds version or file it with the multiple conflicting movie versions that have been made. There was no need to destroy the main storyline of the entire series - the friendship/rivalry between Clark and Lex and Lex's knowledge of Clark's true origin.

It should've ended at season 8. Lex and Clark break up their friendship, go their separate ways of good and evil, then this story ends where the comics begin. But as usual executive greed outweighs good writing and common sense.

The Lana drama got annoying in seasons 6 and 7 but Still pretty good overall. Season 8 is my least favorite but I highly recommend season 9, It's one of the best.

Long story short, It's disappointing because we waited 10 years to see Superman put on a suit and finally learn how to fly himself, and how they hyped up Darkseid to be the ultimate Biggest Bad of the series, only to have him taken out in one shot, and us getting small CGI silhouette glimpses of Superman because Tom welling was too stubborn to wear the suit. But despite it's Game of Thrones esque payoff finale, Smallville did a really good job of telling the story of a more grounded Superman before flying and dawning the cape. Tom Welling's portrayal reminded us that despite his God like powers and strange adventures, Superman lived a simple life just as any regular human. He grew up in a small town, had girl problems, bully problems, he survived high school, went to college and got himself a full time job in the City. Superpowers were just a euphemism for puberty.

I liked Smallville but after season 7 the series completely changed. Seasons 8-10 might as well had been a different series. Smallville basically did everything of the Superman. And the fact Tom Welling never put on the suit felt wrong. The finale writing out Tess and Lionel like that didn’t sit well with me. As well as wiping Lex Memory. And it didn’t help years later Tom Welling returns as Clark on Batwoman only to say he gave up his powers. Which hurt Smallvilles legacy to me. I was marathoning the series when that the crossover happened and was finishing season 8 while starting season 9 and afterwards I slowed down cause of that cameo and found it harder to sit through those seasons knowing he basically gave up his powers and Tom never wore the suit. Like that felt like a slap in the face

man, I was ready to fight you on this one. Smallville was my favorite show when It was out, and I spend probably more time than was healthy on the CW message boards talking about it. But you acknowledged the drop in quality after season 4 (which coincidentally is when they started "leaning in" to the Clark/Lana nonsense), and then mentioned the last few years (which is code for after the abortion that was season 7 aka the Clark/Lana farewell season) had some good in them, which I 100% agree with. But how can a Superman fan who got into the show because it told an old story in a new way not be disappointed by Clark never once really suiting up? I can't...not really. And yes, the mad dash to get everyone into their canonical positions was in retrospect probably unnecessary. But it is REALLY hard to complain when they brought Lex back for the finale, but they dug their own grave when it came to Lois and Clark because they spent more than half of the series alluding to Lana being his true love as opposed to the barely-there GF she was in the comics so they HAD to go big with the finale or it would just feel like the ending was ambiguous and they wouldn't end up together. That is on their obsession with that particular relationship, the finale couldn't do anything about that.

I honestly felt the show went off a cliff after Michael Rosenbaum left. Shortly after that he was superman just not called it. I mean there were still good things about the show but it being "smallville" and not called like "metropolis" or even just superman at that point was just plain dumb. And yeah the ending was incredibly disappointing to say the least. The one shining spot about it was getting to see Rosenbaum play Lex again. Im actually confused as to why he hasnt got any huge roles since that show. The guy is a great actor

All 10 seasons were gold and paved the way for EVERY OTHER comic book show out there! I've watch the entire season over and over with friends with family and others. It is a perfect show and none others have even come close over the last 20 years. Talk s*** about another show because this one deserves so much better...

Things like "character development" ? if you critically analyse smallville...you will clearly see that season 7 is the spiritual final season. Clark is superman in season 7....and he lets lex win. He wont cross the line...season 7 is the climax. So much so that clark dies (again) in the season 8 premire..etc etc.

I do have to agree with your take man. The Smallville ending felt.... very lacking. Characters seemed to bounce up and down from location to location despite the world basically starting to end. Set-ups and character arcs just got dropped at the drop of a hat, plus not seeing Clark in the suit just... ah bad choice. But if I can offer a positive. Also spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn’t seen all of Smallville. While the show’s finale doesn’t hit the mark as a finale should, but where it does succeed is in the show’s “closing moment” (which is usually the finally scene or moment that we see of the show). When Clark opened the door to the Daily Planet’s roof and the slow-mo Superman undressing into his suit kicked in, with the classic Reeve’s Superman theme playing. It just felt right, that everything before this was leading to this brilliant moment. That no matter how imperfect the series finale was this moment made it all worth it.

One of the big things for the finale was that they had The actual Superman Returns costume for the reveal, but it ended up that Tom couldn't fit into it, so they had a body double fit in it for the back shots, and they whipped up a shirt for Tom. so that fucked it up a lot.

I've heard that he didn't want to wear the suit cause it takes a lot of effort to get into shape to wear the costume or something like that. Not sure if is true. I also read that initially he did not want to do the show. He wasn't a Superman fan. And he finally agreed to do the show on the condition that he was never going to wear the suit cause he hated it. Now Christopher Reeve wasn't a Superman fan either but he wasn't ashamed to wear to wear the suit. He took it seriously.
