Are the borders between different cultures disappearing due to the rise of the internet and social media? Or do cultures just become more detached from each other? Tim Richardson talked about differences between cultures.
Tim has spent most of his career in the U.S. diplomatic corps in such far-flung and diverse postings as Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Malaysia and the Republic of Georgia. Throughout his diplomatic career, he has worked with people at all levels of society, from senior government officials to activists to refugees, often discussing the differences that separate us and what brings us together. Now living in Brussels, Tim is the Counselor for Political and Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy to the Kingdom of Belgium.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

From my own experience, I am in complete agreement with you Tim. I'm not a diplomat by profession, but I have lived abroad and I have made friends on Facebook with people from many countries. On Facebook we don't get into much depth, but we establish wonderful friendly connections that can blossom when we get a chance to visit in person.

Excellent contribution! Great clarification about the function and critical shortcomings of internet and social media. Unfortunately, today we have experienced the full destructive power of internet and social media. After the docu-film "Social Dilemma" we also learned that profit maximizing algorithms, hyperaddiction enabled a brain-hacking and cognitive-empoverishment, are heavily inhibiting the diversity of ideas and promoting cultural standardization. Downward.
