A lot of people doesn’t know about there are bouts of democracy in China under communist days under Mao and Deng.In Mao’s early days, he advocated , “Let Hundred Of Flowers blossom ,” campaign when cadres and anyone can express their thoughts and speech freely so as to pinpoint the errors which the govt could correct. But only found out that, this movement backfire as the leaders could not contain the massive complaints , many were aimed at Mao himself. The rest was history. Another attempt of opening up through democracy, happens during Deng’s period. The same thing happened. Deng knew that China could not become chaotic again after repeated disastrous setbacks for hundred of years. Therefore democracy of any sorts must be curtailed and economic development must be No 1 priority. The collapse of the Russia ‘s economy and ctry due to the sudden switch to democratic practices, provided a bitter lesson to China too. To them, democracy will proceed but at their own pace, not by the forceful accusations of the West that China must do this or that.

I agree. China has a democratic system at local level and she kept saying “China has no democracy” reflected how poor her understanding of democracy in China was. At the same time, CCP does limited to the access to media contents unfavorable to them, so it’s not like their democracy flourish as she described.

There is always good and bad. It is just whether the end results is beneficial or harmful. It depends on a lot of good judgment to ensure no one abuses social media for their own ulterior motive.

Major flaw in the debate is the implicit, almost default presumption that Social Media = Facebook. There are other social media channels, like (hey, right here!) KZbin that expose people to lengthy (dare I say) deliberative content. Look at how many people view lengthy, often thick (a.k.a., "boring") Jordan Peterson videos, or this very debate! There is a hunger for meaty content, and it is getting satisfied by social media in ways traditional media has abandoned and is financially unable to support. The major challenge is that people are seeking "meaty content" that satisfies their preconceptions rather than inform them in a more holistic way. That needs to be addressed.

The fact that you view Peterson as "meaty content" just shows that you haven't thought deliberately enough about Peterson.

This video is one of the best things I've watched on KZbin in weeks. Some interesting points on each side and plenty to think about. I do however think that the definition of "social media" needs to be revised, as my view is that *all* media is now social (comments sections, sharable links, presence on FB, Twitter, KZbin, etc). In addition, what people are calling "traditional" or "mainstream" news media are not necessarily competing against these digital platforms but are actively being amplified by them. Dark Social platforms like WhatsApp or private WeChat messages are also part of this debate when we discuss social media. However, what distinguishes WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger from tools like email or Skype which also facilitate group private engagement where ideas and content can be distributed? So that's why I suggest that the term social media is inadequate and can be used as a lazy shorthand to talk about a handful of platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Here in the UK, WhatsApp Groups are commonly used by political committees both to facilitate policy making but also to encourage the spread of gossip and machievellian manoeuvres. I agree with points on both sides of this debate and need to research this topic some more.

I feel like the team supporting the proposition is speaking about “social media” as if it means access to Internet forums, whereas the team against the proposition is speaking about “social media” as platforms like Facebook that generate revenue by employing engagement algorithms, i.e. recommending content similar to what you’ve already viewed.

These debates always are weighted on the left side of the scale. Both sides are always pandering to the overwhelming left-leaning audience. BLM and Me2 used all around as evidence of positive social media...

jake rover exactly because the left-leaning audience thinks it’s not in a bubble and thinks its hearing two different sides and considers itself open-minded. Something like half this country is conservative and believes BLM and metoo are nonsense, we deserve a real debate.

Exactly. I myself support the BLM and MeToo movements but I agree they should use evidence that is non-debatably positive

@@elj1454 if you have both sides in agreement that BLM and Metoo are positives, when I would bet somewhere between 35-65% of our citizens disagree, then you are not listening to a good debate and you are walking away less capable of understanding the opposing views. It’s like listening to a debate on best desserts and everyone agrees that pumpkin pie is delicious and keeps using it as a baseline then never hearing from a side that says pumpkin pie is not healthy, has poor texture, and is often covered with ice cream or whipped cream. Regardless of how we all feel towards pumpkin pie, we came here for a debate... we should hear one!

I kinda hate these types of debates, because social media is not a fixed concept. Social media made with the goal of promoting democracy, knowledge, local organising, community etc etc it would look totally different than what we have now. Social media is here for profit, wich makes its goal engagement and to do that they abuse the power of humans shortcommings. The algorythms aren't here to help the people it is their to help advitisers and make sure that as much time is spend. I Could go on. I am kinda annoyed that this way of thinking is not often done in our public debates. It is pro or against. This is just chains we give our selfs, it is not gathering all the information and knowledge there is and with all i mean from neuroscience and evolutionairy knowledge to idk astronomy and math. Not just data but look if we are missing something, if there is another way or if we need to zoom out and see that there isnt a solution because the cause is a more structural problem that is hindering our ability to really optimize the solution.

For side did address the issues in brain hacking and the supercomputers analyzing keystroke data and other meta data. It's unfortunate that for side thinks human beings stand a chance against algorithms and super computers. Facebook picks your feed...infinite scroll, notification sounds and frequency. It's alot more terrifying than the for side appreciates

"GDPR means publishers are cutting off Europe." From what I've seen they're mostly just applying GDPR rules to US citizens as it's easier to not bifurcate their market. A few notable exceptions does not prove that rule, sorry.
