Another thing is that I’ve noticed that many people who decorate their lives on social media and show all the major “highlights” of their “perfect” lives are usually living a nightmare! Many of them are having interpersonal problems, relationships/marriages are falling apart, and the happiness they speak of is merely a facade…and let’s not even mention the narcissistic ones who post a selfie or story of a selfie every five seconds 🙄. Yeah, I’m over it.

I watch a variety of KZbin channels. Several of the people I follow are candid that their lives look nothing like their videos. One, who is a mother, showed her house in real-life disarray, and although it's not the content focus for her channel, showed herself decluttering her home. All of them also admit that they produce their videos to be pleasing or no one would watch them, but it is painful every time they point out issues with noise in the background. All have had burnout and stepped away from their channels multiple times.

The worst thing about social media is seeing the ones who've abused, betrayed, traumatized or have done you wrong in some way, living better lives than you could. Because you were dealing with the depressions, addictions, shame, trauma, dissociation, debts, homelessness etc. Social media makes them the targets and you the psycho who is checking them out. Once I started using social media like that, it facilitated some really dark homicidal ideations in me. That's why I can never, ever return to social media.

I’m a mental health Therapist.. and at this point in my life, I only have LinkedIn and KZbin 😂😂. The negative impact of social media on individual mental Health and couples (yes it comes up in marriage counseling quite often) is daunting. I miss life before social media. My friends know that I’m the one they’ll have to call or text to stay connected 😂😂😂 So KZbin is here for mostly music and informational channels and of course I hit up linked when job hunting I feel so much more peace without it and wish more people understood the negative impacts. Especially with our youth. I have a preteen and she has no desire to join social media. I’m sure because she has observed my relationship with it.. and I’m thankful

Jaroslav Dušek actor and altruist said: "Social media produce 100 000 pieces of information per minute, you can not read all of it in one lifetime. Next minute is produced another 100 000 pieces of information." It dseems best info you get when going to nature, meet with people in real life, in events. You remember better the real life events. Did you notice that your brain tries to remove 90 percent of noise you saw when scrolling social media? It´s because the brain tries to delete during the sleep, information that you dont use often and maintain only those that you think of often, so rather you should follow positive content on social media or some artisic things as music art, nature, sports etc.

I don't activate notifications from any platform. That amount of interruptions would drive me crazy. My problem, as you mention, is seeing those happy posts of people I know surrounded by caring friends and loving family and engaging in activities I can no longer afford. My introspection (why am I not living such an enriching life?) sometimes turns to self criticism and despondency. So, yes, social media is on a diet.

This has helped with me enjoying all the good of social media.

Vrlo rado zaborave sve sto ste dobro ucinili. Moj savjet je - SKLONITE SE OD SoMe. Ne vjerujte da drugi imaju dobar život. Vjerujte sebi i slušajte svoju intuiciju. Ja ne koristim antidepresive iako mi nedostaje moja familija, iako me se odrasla kćerka odrekla, ja ne živim da bih prezivjela - ja živim jer želim da nadigrat ovu depresiju. It's interesting how I started out this morning feeling negative thoughts from my 7 year old son being back at his mother's house and addictive patterns with, depression & anxiety letting options slip and being nagged by his mother about his birthday coming soon, had me avoid texting because countless self loathing suggested it was best. So I've been watching Dr Tracy for 12 hours and had a mixed bag of emotions, yet ultimately the self awareness and confirmation has exhausted my bad thoughts and ceased today's lone binge drinking. Yet it's ironic the platform aiding me is an already known source of mental health issues and explained transparently by Dr Tracy 😊. What I'd like to achieve is stopping my 2 steps forward one step back and compulsive self destructive patterns 👍.

One more thing that I think is worth pointing out is the "first thing in the morning" factor. I can't rightly remember where I picked that up, but it was also a mental health education channel, so it's not just my speculation here. The point that person made was that, about an hour or the first forty minutes after waking up, your brain is still finishing processing the information it engaged with during your sleep. If you immediately begin loading it up with more fresh information (and, in our wonderful times, it's usually negative one on top of that...), it interferes with that process of filing things away for the day, and can contribute to the feeling of being overwhelmed and lacking control over your life. A good habit would be to postpone using your devices until after you're done with refreshing yourself, doing morning calisthenics, eating breakfast, etc. Anyway, thanks for another great video, Dr. Marks! I've been on the receiving end of a few of the positives you've brought up, so I'm glad it wasn't all doom and gloom cautionary look at the topic.

@@Godhasaplanforyou10 I do a few things: I turn most of the notifications off, if I reach for my phone after my 20 minutes I stop myself from actually picking it up, sometimes I leave my phone in another room with the door closed. Also, I view the phone as a TOOL for communication, not an intrinsic part of life, which helps a lot. It's easier to put down a "hammer" when you don't need a hammer, if that makes sense. Also, on the rare days when I spend too much time on my phone (or other electronics), I take a step back, admit I wasted my time, then forgive myself.

@@TheLillianYoung just remember that you felt that way as a result of the interplay of your genetics and every prior experience in your life. Try to acknowledge and validate your feelings. A few thousand years ago, social isolation was likely to lead to death. As a species, we _evolved_ to feel awful at the thought of being alone, excluded, rejected, etc. It's completely normal and rational to feel down when you're left out like that at any age. I think the best thing we can do in situations like that is try to give the people in our lives the benefit of the doubt. Even if there's not really a great reason for being left out, it could be something as simple as each person assumed somebody had already reached out and it was a collective ball drop rather than a deliberate exclusion.

I have clinical depression and anxiety. A number of family members have this diagnosis going back to at least my maternal grandfather, perhaps further back. Several years ago I had to drastically reduce my social media engagement as it was absolutely making my symptoms worse. On Facebook alone I had over 1000 "friends". Today I have 98. And almost all of them I know in real life in some way and have at least shared real conversations with. Family and some friends I've known for 30 years. Most days I don't even check Facebook or Twitter. And I might as well not have Instagram. Lol I use KZbin everyday. I guess that counts as social media. I mostly watch video game content. And a few channels on subjects important to me. Like mental/physical health (obviously 😊), disabilty (I'm physically disabled from birth), some retro music, tv and movies stuff. I'm very cautious about commenting on KZbin videos because there's so much hate online, especially if your comment doesn't sit well with some random stranger. It used to bother me terribly. However, I've been trying to stretch myself and comment more. So far, so good.

I miss the Quality of Social Life before computers and cell phones... people nowadays stare at their phones with frown faces....I do not look at social media.

I’ve started deleting the Facebook app. I haven’t deactivated my account. I just delete the app so that I have to download and reinstall it to use it. This way, I don’t fill every spare moment wasting time on there. I have to really have a legitimate reason to go through all that. I’ve been getting more done, my thinking feels better organized, and I feel it has significantly reduced my depression and anxiety. Great video.

Dear Doctor Marks! My name is Oxana, I am from Almaty, Kazakhstan. I would like to express my sincere and heartfelt gratitude for all helpful and up-to-the-point relevant information you provide in ALL your videos!!!❤ I am a fybromialgia, discirculatory encephalopathy, and bipolar disorder (type II -- recurrent depressions) survivor. I've been watching ALL your videos for several years and ALWAYS find it helpful for either the problems and challenges I face on a daily (in fact, 24/7) basis or the issues and challenges that some of my friends have. (which means -- I always send links to your videos to my friends). Thank you so much!!!🌹 Looking forward to more news videos ahead!

Dr Marks.... Thanks so much for your videos! However, I have not seen any content (this includes other KZbinrs) concerning: how one should respond to the growing anxiety and 'craziness' within our society. As a highly sensitive INFJ type, I'm bombarded daily in my interactions with the general public where I can FEEL their anxiety, anger... etc etc. For me it is almost suffocating; both aggressive and passive aggressive reactions to daily life. I've worked hard over the years to discover myself and improve...but now, the public has become toxic for several reasons and has become a serious threat to our collective mental health. I would greatly appreciate a video that unpacks this situation and what can I do to make it better while protecting myself abuse. Thoughts? Thanks!

So I watch mental health channels on KZbin that target a specific diagnosis. I won't name the channel, or the creator but it is a person living with whom I have followed since my diagnosis. They work with an organization and research educational information presented. Recently, they posted a video about symptoms that get worse with age, and what gets better. Most/all symptoms that get worse are 1) age-related, and 2) biologically based. The things that get better, e.g., having a support team, insight, are more behavioral or psychosocial in nature. Please note: there was no information on how to manage and cope with these age-relared symptoms. It was a short, awareness focused video, speaking to a younger audience. As an older adult, about to turn 65, I was distraught. Initially, the video left me with a sense of hopelessness. I cried off and on the entire day. And, I have been depressed since. Intellectually, I know I am catastrophizing, everyone's experience is different. I already talked to my doctor about symptoms. I got testing. Ok so far. But emotionally. . . I wanted to email the creator to remove (or revise?) the video, but I would have to join the channel/community, and I didn't want to. After the change to a shorter video format (thanks Tik Tok) in the past year, I haven't found the content helpful anymore and unsubscribed. I watch another channel where the creator, living with, shares their own experience, but also interviews other people living with, as well as medical professionals. But this person is also young (30s?). Dr. Marks always presents solution-focused videos, so this is where I'll go moving forward.

This comes at the right time. I recently installed Instagram again and started to post few pics. What I'm longing for is connection and I've been a huge amount of my life isolated; out of fear. But the sun is starting to shine and I'm not afraid anymore to express myself. Yet, it is a slippery slope to not get lost in the noise and distraction and focus on the good things and people. Sometimes the algorithm seems so telling as if I would look into a tarot reading. But as with a Tarot reading, to use it as a metaphor, some cards just aren't yours even if it seems like it. And I've noticed that the Algorithm tends to perpetuate a negative state of mind and by that reinforces it. I love your video, thank u for your work!❤

I've always been honest online, and never hid my autism or schizophrenia diagnosis (or other ones). I build communities, almost entirely composed of other people who later reveal their disabilities to me privately. I don't hide how bad my life is, or my few wins. In fact, me letting people know what was going on with me is what got me out of an incredibly abusive (my father did die, I got away) household because someone was willing to help and I was willing to accept that help. Human interaction is hard, and black and white is extremely rare, no matter how much my own brain screams at me that it's common. Anyway Dr. Marks, did you ever get the chance into using tabletop roleplaying as mutual storytelling that teaches mindfulness and better social interaction skills? You might not remember us conversing about this since it was awhile ago.

I know what I see is fake mostly. I personally know people going through relationship troubles, but you'd never know it via social media. It's none of our business of course, but I wish people wouldn't act like all is peachy when it isn't. We compare and get jealous of people's travel pics. I don't care, since we don't know if these folks are in debt, if someone else is paying for their trips and/or helping out with expenses. I will go to Greece soon, so for now will enjoy my friend's photos without feeling down about myself.

I don’t comment often. I have F20 Schizophrenia. Every now and then I see Pareidolia. This is a topic that’s rare and hard to find a solution and information. And all that the internet says is that there is no specific medicine or medication for it. Doctor I would like you to make a video or an update video on this topic. It will really help me. Love your videos. Thank you. ❤

People are so slow and sad. Social media is inspiration. people just need to love god and themselves and you will always find happiness inna everything. Social media is not sadness, it sounds crazy as hell. People cause themselves to be weak and dum minded. Who would be mad at other people posts, but why even initiate that type of thinking. Just have fun and be happy, social media is just fun...nothing more....

Dr. Alex Korg, the author of *The Upward Spiral* says social media contributes to depression because while the curated content and likes produce more dopamine (at first), oxytocin (the love/bonding hormone) levels drop at the same time. We think we are connecting to others online, but we aren't. It's just addiction.
