This is actually real, that's what I see from most people: Sonic 1 - Meh Sonic 2 - Great Sonic 3 & Knuckles - Great This actually bothers me, as I consider Sonic 1 Good, not Great as the others surpassed it, but people seem to hate the first game, as it does not have a Spindash and Super Sonic or Tails & Knuckles (all added in the remasters)

I don't think the lack of 'super forms' is a huge reason why people don't like the game as much. The levels are very inconsistent in quality, and they hadn't really figured out which elements worked and which didn't.

I definitely still think Sonic The Hedgehog is amazing! I will never forget being blown away by that game on Xmas morning of 1991. I was a Nintendo fan until that very day. Hell, I even have an 11 year-old dog named "Sega".

I've never heard anyone criticise sonic the hedgehog. Well unless you mean the modern games in general, but that's fair critisicm because they weren't a patch on the mega drive titles. I've never heard anyone criticise the og mega drive games, in fact nothing but universal praise. Which they deserve because they're timeless. Personally I think they're far more impressive for their time than the Mario games, sonic had speed Mario was just a super well made platform game didn't do anything special, wasn't revolutionary in any way. Great all the same. I remember when sonic first came out, coming back to school after Christmas holidays... It was the only thing people were talking about, this new sonic thing I'd never heard of. That was in the uk though mega drive was alot more successful there

This was the first game I played on my Megadrive (PAL region, Europe) and I still have nightmares about the nervewrecking music when Sonic runs out of air 😅

I agree 100%. I went back and played through this game last December and finally beat it with all the emeralds. Very satisfying. As an adult, you quickly realize where you cannot rush through or you will be punished. Now it was a lot easier to get the emeralds and get through the game. On that last stage, with the flipping platforms (6-1?), I try to jump so that when I land, the platforms will have JUST stopped flipping and I can walk on them and jump again when they will flip again. Although, doing so while getting the timing of the flame is NOT easy, it works for me.

I have to agree. I had been seeing a lot of hate going around on the web but when I seriously played the games all I noticed was: People who did not bother learning the subtleties of the controls. Sonic may have bad sections in the game for the most part is still a great game. Even SMB3 had issues, and for the most part I just learned to get around them and reach the end.

I don't think it has to do with a bandwagon mentality. It has to do with an abundance of terrible games. Ever since its awkward transition to 3D, the Sonic franchise has always struggled to really find its identity. There have been a variety of titles with hugely differing atmospheres, stories, and mechanics. And of these, only a very small handful have been successful while the others have ranged from below-average to absolute garbage.

secretagentman I agree, Sonic Lost World isn't even a bad game but it's received as terrible for whatever reason. The only truly garbage Sonic games are Sonic 06 (which IMO isn't even that terrible because I'm a sucker for the adventure style gameplay but I understand why it is hated so much), Shadow the Hedgehog, Secret Rings (mostly because it's clunky controls but it's story was pretty interesting and I like Darkspine Sonic), and maybe Sonic Forces (I haven't completed forces yet however). I heard Black Night was terrible to some too but I've never played it and have seen little gameplay of it

Great review with a lot of fair points on the game though I will say that Labyrinth Zone can suck it until the end of days. I find the first game to be too slow for what was promised, where Green Hill is fast and free most of the levels after that feel slow and focus more about the platforming and you don't get that same sense of freedom again. I also did a review on this game as one of my first videos. It's a little rough but I stand by what I say in it, check it out if you have the time. I too think that the secret ending is pretty crummy for all the work you had to put into the game though but even having 2 different endings to a platformer was pretty uncommon for the time so I'm just glad they did it.

22:50 The inconsistency with spikes was fixed in future revisions of the game (e.g. the JP version). It also included a few additional background parallax scrolling FX (e.g. the clouds in Green Hill Zone). Also, do I need I say that your reviews are fantastic? ;)

Great video. I enjoyed the UK home micro gaming scene in the 80's and hadn't touched a console experience since the Atari VCS, when I picked up a Sega Game Gear to play during work lunchtimes etc. I picked up 3 games when I bought the handheld, World Class Leaderboard (Golf), GG Shinobi & Sonic The Hedgehog ... they were amazing, and still represent 3 of my favourite gaming experiences. I subsequently picked up a Master System and MegaDrive (Genesis) but the Sonic experiences on the big screen just didn't feel the same as those great handheld sessions. To this day, I still much prefer the slightly slower, more platformy feel of 8bit Sonic to the 16bit games.

Hi. Just started watching you recently and I enjoy your in depth analysis of these games. I will say I disagree with you on the whole unlimited continue thing. While a lot of games that are more trial and error should include them, this is a game that does continues perfectly. Receiving damage is not as permanent as in most games, and you can use the rings to gain both extra lives and continues. The game with its large levels with hidden goodies emphasizes repeat gameplay. First time players will have to restart a few times before beating the game, but still have incentive to keep playing to get the 2nd ending. Some games do limited continues very well. Also, the spike damage is a glitch. For the first rerelease (Sonic Jam on Saturn) as well as most rereleases after they have an option to fix this.

The game gameplay (I mean speed) is surpassed by the later games, but what I find in this game, and never dies: its identity, as I would call it. There is a very pleasant feeling about the levels, and I particulary say the OST is quite unique, a total J-pop squee, which later games do not precisely have. It has its own charm. so yeah, it's not a game I would replay because of a genuine "oo this was so fun!! I want to try it again!!", but is a game I greatly praise. kind of. Again: its own charms

I hear people complain often that the original game isn't good because you can't go fast much. But they're missing the point. Sonic the Hedgehog is an incredibly fun and accessible platformer, and an important game that shook up the platforming genre upon release. You wanna teach anybody who hasn't gotten into the series yet what Sonic is all about, this is still the game to show them. Speedrunning, platforming, physics, water levels, spectacle and speed, good level design (mostly) and a good difficulty progression testing player skill, all get taught to the player in each zone. Sonic the Hedgehog is indeed still a good game, whether your favourite game is Sonic 3 or Sonic Adventure, the deserved respect this game got in 1991 still stands today

Is Sonic 1 still good? I personally think so, but after playing entries like Advance 1, Advance 3, 3&Knuckles, and the Rush games, I wouldn't rank Sonic 1 anything above "good" as I hated Labyrinth Zone and wasn't the biggest fan of Scrap Brain Zone (with the latter having arguably an Act 4 to Labyrinth Zone). The problem with your comment is that you are ranking Sonic games higher than the first title. As the beginning of the series Sonic 1 still stands up. Yeah Sonic 2 was Sonic 1 but much better because it incorporated the Spin Dash and Sonic 3 went even further with the insta-shield along with Sonic's abilities with the elemental shields, Sonic 1 still stands up to this day. It's a game where it all began and overtime it still doesn't suck. I also don't get the hate for Labyrinth Zone. Yeah it's not a speed level by any means but there are much worse water levels out there and actually if Sonic had the Spin Dash in Sonic 1, Labyrinth would have been a non-issue. In fact Hydrocity is objectively a harder water level with far more traps and enemies. Imagine using Sonic 1 "Sonic" in Hydrocity, people wouldn't call it one of their favorite levels.

Labyrinth is not a "non-issue" with the spindash, as seen in several romhacks and the mobile remaster of the game, which has the spindash. Unlike Hydrocity, the stage is not based around speedy exploration and platforming. Labyrinth is based entirely on waiting. Waiting for bubbles, waiting for spike balls to move, waiting for spikes to go back into the ground. Adding the spindash may make the small breathers take less time but it doesn't fix the main problem which is the entire stage being based on standing still and waiting for things to move. Hydrocity, however is based around Sonic's speed. If you are skilled enough in avoiding enemies and traversing the obstacles such as spikes and air currents(?) that push you upwards, you will never have to wait for an air bubble. The water shield is not needed to make air bubbles obsolete. There are several secrets you can find, and while Labyrinth has the occasional secret, Hydrocity encourages you to make use of the level design and physics to find Special Rings, invincibility boxes, and alternate pathways. You do not need the spindash, insta-shield, or elemental shields to go through Hydrocity with ease. Admittedly, Hydrocity is a bit slower without use of the spindash as you will have to build up some speed to go around the loops, but speed is not hard to get. You can easily get through Hydrocity with just basic movement and rolling. However, neither is the perfect water level. Aquatic Ruins is the best in my opinion, as if you are familiar enough with the level design and skilled enough, you can keep out of the water entirely. I've never personally done it, but I've stayed out of the water for a large portion of the stage.

When I reviewed this game of my secondary channel back in 2015 I may have used some nostalgia goggles to be honest. I did try to be fair with my review but I think you knocked out the park with this one. The one thing I just don't like from this game is the fourth boss. It might as well just be part of the level. It shouldn't be a boss at all. You're not fighting him at all. I also think that issue with the invincibility frames and the spikes was not meant to be in this game and they messed up on there. In later releases of soft the hedgehog such as the one that I commonly played since the 2000s which was on Sonic mayor collection for GameCube they fixed that issue with the spike so clearly that wasn't meant to be in the game.

I'm curious as to what you think about cheat codes? I used to spend hours playing with the debug cheats in this game and its sequel. In fact, as much as possible back then, I'd look up whether a game had cool cheats before I'd buy it.

I sometimes use level select cheat codes to practice levels, especially in Lion King... but that is all I ever use them for. If they help people enjoy a game more, then all the power to them :) I'm certain the Game Genie enhanced many kid's lives when it came to the NES!

In Starlight you can actually defeat the green urchin enemies but you have to jump at them at an angle so you go in between their rotating spikes. It's very hard to do and more likely then not you are going to get hit. So with those guys it's actually easier to just get hit on purpose and abuse the invincibility frames to attack them.

U should try the sonic games on the Nintendo Gamecube (yes..i know), but "sonic mega collection" is in my opinion the best experience of sonic possible. Highest quality graphics and sounds/music and....widescreen! I play it with the original rgb cable and its perfect! There are also gamecube HDMI adapters on the market these days, but i didn't had the chance to try it yet. And guess what, ALL the megadrive/genesis sonic games are on this disc. A true gem!

I hate how some tend to say the game hasn't aged well and maybe it's not completely polished, but there's still a lot to appreciated in this game even to this day. After a recent playthrough, I can easily say it's a solid 8.5/10 for me and the only things that really hold it back for me is some of the weird level design choices, especially found in the first two Scrap Brain acts, also I'm not the biggest fan of Labyrinth Zone lol.

In Sonic Mega Collection on Gamecube, if you play in 60hz mode then spikes dont kill you during invincibility. But on 50hz (aka PAL mode) they do. I always thought it was a PAL exclusive glitch.

The only thing I dislike about this game is the lack of continues... I don't mind trial and error to an extent, but having to replay the entire game after dying in the last stage just seems unnecessary and creates a feeling of tedious, repetitive gameplay rather than a feeling of real, but fair, challenge. I'm honestly glad that limited continues are largely a thing of the past and honestly, it's my only reason for not completing a lot of these old sonic games. I enjoy, them, but don't have the patience to replay certain levels in their entirety several times just to complete the game once. While some levels are fun to master, overall it gets boring and frustrating, which are two things I never want a game to be. Tight gameplay is certainly present in these old games and it's astounding how well it has held up, but the lack of continues is just something I can't seem to see past.

Everybody hates Labyrinth but the only bad part is the boss which is way too much of a difficultly spike. Marble Zone is the real culprit. It stinks.

I feel like most of this is fair. And I'm not going to deny the cheapness of some things throughout the game. That's common in a lot of games as it's nearly impossible to be perfect. I just sorta disagree with some of what's being considered "cheap" simply because it's challenging, such as the Special Stage. It makes perfect sense to me to have an exit you must avoid at least in each area or else what's the point?

The exit makes perfect sense. It the lack of control while spinning around that is the problem. Gunstar Heroes probably best exemplifies how to create an awesome challenge without resorting to questionable level design, sloppy enemy placement, or buggered controls to test the player's skill.

Sonic 1 is probably my least favorite of the original trilogy with Sonic 2 being my 2nd favorite and Sonic 3&K being my definite favorite (it's definitely in my top 5 sonic games). That being said, Sonic 1 is still a solid game and is by no means bad.

My advice to newcomers to the Sonic series is to just skip Sonic 1 and play either 2 or 3. Both games improve on the original in every way possible.

The first Sonic on the Mega Drive wasn't that good. It always felt more of a "look at our Blast Processing" Tech Demo to me. Bland level design, horrible bonus stages. I always prefered Sonic 1 on the Master System, which felt more like an actual game. Sonic 2, 3 and Knuckles on the MD are awesome though.

Really? The Genesis / Mega Drive games are generally regarded as excellent, along with Sonic CD on the Sega CD. The Sonic Advance games on the Gameboy Advance are also well regarded, as is Sonic Rush on the 3DS. Basically, the 2D Sonic games are good, and most (but not all) of the 3D Sonic games are poor.

More likely some sad PC Engine, Amiga and SNES fanboys because the Genesis was directly competiting with these systems and kicked all kind of asses while none of these systems were competiting each others. A tough spot for Sega's console and it handled it perfectly. Now if only the Saturn did as good as the Genesis... (it still did much better than the Amiga CD32 or NEC PC-FX).
