In this video I look back at Soul Hackers 2, a JRPG from master video game developers Atlus, creators of Persona 5. I adored my time with this game back in 2022 and in my opinion it is a supremely underrated gem.
Revisiting this game has allowed me to look in depth into what makes this game worth revisiting and the parts that may not be quite as good as I remember.
Please note there will be minor spoilers throughout the video, but nothing that will affect your experience or spoil the story beyond minor events in the first few hours.

I love Soul Hackers 2, but that is, in part, due to the director. I adore Mitsuru Hirata's other works, including Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Radiant Historia. He also was involved on Strange Journey. Most of the games hes involved with almost always have really strong character interactiond as one of the main selling points, even if overall stories are kinda mixed.

You know, the complaints about the dungeons reminded me of the Chrysler Building in Parasite Eve 1. It is a question that interests me, because those long segments of grinding and the same tune over and over again certainly didn't raise red flags for most players back in 1998.

I remember it well (and still hope for a PE remake one day!). Something that interests/depresses me nowadays is how often I meet someone who wasn’t alive in 1998 😂

Good video, I definitely cant help but to the feel the dungeons and core combat system felt weak and lacking but the characters, atmosphere and story have made me keep playing.

I think one of the main things that turned alot of people off, myself included was them calling it soul hackers 2 and it really did not feel like a sequel at all with the change in art style and it being personified. and paying full price for a game with mixed reviews in the 70's was too steep of an asking price. Having recently played it when it was on a sale i can say i enjoyed my time with it and its not as bad as alot of people made it out to be. I had some gripes with the game but like with alot of jrpgs, if the story is good i can overlook the shortcomings and i appreciated the more adult take on the story both in overall narrative and character interactions vs teenage angst must save the world that was in p5 basically lol.

I agree, kind of. I'm playing the game right now, but I feel like you fail to address how badly designed the dungeons are, especially the Soul Matrix. Requiring 16 floors of that with no changes in music or background AT ALL feels like a waste of time. I actually like doing it, though, after work, when I'm in the mood for a lighter game.

Unfortunately I already know it isn’t. Ringo deserved a better game. They should just make her a dlc character for each Persona/SMT release now. Because i’m not trying to play Soul Hackers 2 at all.

At first i was excited to buy this game cause i'm a big fan of megaten series. But after watching gameplay video on youtube and review i decided to skip this one. Character design is good since it's Miwa shiro but the gameplay feel like a reskin of persona. Bit the biggest drawback is that there is no new or unique demon in this game. Not to mention some demon and satan is paid DLC (if it's SMT apocalypse satan i don't really mind but it was regular megaten satan).
