Is Stargate Bad? - Talking About Tapes

Tony and Ryan review the Roland Emmerich classic that launched a franchise, Stargate. Find out if the movie is as bad as people say or if its a underrated gem in this Podcast / Movie Review. We take a look at the story, the actors, and the production design.
Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) is brought to an underground military base where he decodes the symbols on Egyptian cover stones as constellations. That allows an alien device, known as the Stargate, to be opened and a team led by Air Force Colonel Jack' O' Neil (Kurt Russell) and Jackson to travel across the known universe to a distant planet. Arriving on the planet, they find a culture ruled by someone pretending to be the Egyptian sun god Ra (Jaye Davidson) Soon, Ra captures the team and takes control of a nuclear weapon brought to the planet in case of the discovery of hostile aliens. Jackson and O'Neil escape and must fight Ra and his army of warriors to save Earth from being destroyed by Ra.

I got into AVGN years ago and I love all involved! With that said though, it's run its course for me and I fricken LOVED Rental Reviews and Tony was my favorite part of it. Most importantly though, I like the discussion format instead of just one dude reviewing a movie. I'm glad you continue the format on Tony and I mean it when I say THANK YOU! I think you've forgotten that Jack is on a suicide mission to detonate the bomb from the other side of the gate should he detect any hostile threat. Also, while Daniel's drawing covers how the Stargate charts a course to travel from one point to another, the show's pilot episode simply adds that many other gates still exist beyond Abydos and they've found a way to dial to them.

I have to admit that I just watched this channel out of morbid curiosity at first, then quite literally found it itching my scratch to go back and watch some of these cult favorites I've missed. I'm not a huge horror guy but I'm fascinated with early 90s sci-fi, so I appreciate reviews like this and the Pacino as the devil Keanu flick 😂, rarely do I go back and watch the films from youtube review shows, but for whatever reason this channel gives me the motivation to do so. Love it

I'm sceptical of anything rebooted right now. They'll just ruin it. I enjoyed the SG1 a good bit. It was one of the only TV alien series that had the humans investigate and gradually adopt alien tech. Most shows just have them stay stagnant tech-wise. It was really cool to see humans become an advanced tech race by actively seeking out and studying alien tech. It was like a slower version of X-Com

I love this movie. In the extended lore of SG-1, they talk about how Ra's alien host is connected to the Asgards. Zilla is a good design. It's not Godzilla, but it's a good giant monster.

Having the people of earth redial the gate isn't a glaring hole. One of the soldiers even say that the gate must be dialed from the side you are traveling from. The hole, is of how did Daniel dial the gate from the abydos side without the computer setup. While series had the. DHD there wasn't one in the movie.

I saw Stargate a few years ago, I remember being really annoyed by the part where the soldiers are mad at Daniel because he can't figure out how to use the Stargate to return to Earth, even though I don't think he wanted to leave Earth in the first place, and at one point they even knocked his papers out of his hand. What if he lost some papers with vital information about Earth's coordinates, and they all became trapped on that planet forever?

When this movie came out it was filmed right outside of my city, all the Native American kids were excused from school for first two weeks during the filming of this Summer of 1993 Yuma Arizona/Winterhaven California.. my Eighth grade math teacher’s husband was lead builder on the sets…. Stargate is a great movie. It was a good cast, a great premise, and really gets you into believing everything in it. When it came to the show, I was really excited, got really into it because exploring other worlds to expand that concept was a perfect way to build a show. But by the time they had their own space ships, it just became generic star trek ripoff, and thats when I bailed on it. The show lost it's premise, and that made me appreciate the movie more. Love these talks tony, look forward as I binge them, but you need a chronological playlist.

I thought the movie was awesome many yrs ago when it came out. I did and DO enjoy it. However, when I was young, I didn't really didn't know that there was a narrative being perpetuated that African's weren't capable of creating the magnificence of the Pyramids and the artwork found throughout Egypt so it had to be aliens. I didn't learn about that stuff until my sophomore year in college back in 2002 and now here in 2021, I can see it. This movie definitely perpetuates that nonsense. I loved the costumes though. The movie is okay.

Meh, you guys are good but you didn't follow O'Neal's arc at all. He showed up ready to die after the loss of his child he had no reason to live, which is why he was always wanting to set the bomb. Finding those people and helping them win back their freedom gave him reason to live, brought the joy of life back to him. Its not a deep story and may have needed to be flushed out more but it was there. Its why Kurt played him and quite, rude at the start and by the end of the movie he was even smiling at times.

I still have the vhs. Gotta check for coupons. I loved the movie, the costumes, the premise. Because we want to believe. I am currently watching SG1 on Netflix. The first season is rehashing the same story over again and I wish the Egyptian theme was more prominent. It getting better now with second and third season. Although I’ll be nitpicky. . . in episode “1969” when they go back to year 1969, O’Neil tells the interrogator he’s Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise. Sorry, did the writers, the actors, the directors, anyone who was involved in the episode remember Star Trek was on from 1966-1969??

How on earth did nobody figure out they were constellations? Several of the glyphs are directly obvious, including Orion which is directly above the seventh symbol. - Why would Stargates in the Milky Way use constellations when constellations are completely different from anywhere else? - You don't need six points to determine a location in three-dimensional space. In fact, his own example showed you only need four. - They "didn't know" they needed seven symbols, yet the computer interface literally has an open spot for a seventh symbol? - So with the seventh symbol in mind... nobody ever thought to just try every single symbol on the ring until they found the last one? I'll be honest I never liked this movie. I saw it as a kid and thought it was dumb. I watched it twenty years later and still thought it was dumb. And I still think it's dumb today. I have no idea why this movie "grabbed" people the way it did. This fantastical science fiction device and all they did with it is visit a dirty ugly city full of humans that could have just been anywhere in Africa.

There's a 2nd payoff, I think to kurt Russell's kid having shot himself; The whole reason they send kurt on this mission in the first place is because they need someone willing to potentially stay behind, trigger the nuke and sacrifice himself. Who better to send on a suicide mission then a guy who's already suicidal?

Oh good God. Dont mention 'The Patriot (2000) As a Historian, that film triggered me so fucking much. That film is not only inaccurate but downright dishonest and offensive. Even Braveheart was more historically accurate. (And Braveheart wasn't historically accurate. Believe me.) Still love Jason Isaacs tho.. Lmao
