Cam changed the game 💯. He made drafting a Justin Fields,Lamar, Mariota, Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson and Allen possible. I remember after his national championship game how coaches in high school and college started starting and recruiting running QBs and building a system around them. He carried the culture and influence the game on and off the field more than any other QB of that time.

You’ve gotta he out of your mind lmfao Russel Wilson is 5’11 at most he was drafted in 3rd round, if anything Michael Vick and Drew brees made it possible for him. Mike Vick made it possible for Lamar who Kyler was more because of Russel seeing he’s barely 5’10. Josh Allen is the ONLY one comparable and he gets the nod for cam/Big Ben… Vince Young was more of a Cam Newton comp then anybody BEFORE there was a cam Newton This is silly af tbh 😂😂😂 Patrick Mahomes is WAYYYY more influential tf do you think Trey lance and Zack Wilson got drafted so high? @@Juntao1989 I would agree with about Vick however between the time of Vick and Cam Newton there was no huge influx of running quarterback until Cam Newton won the national championship you can clearly see a correlation between quarterbacks drafted after 2011 and Cam entering the league. Vick and young were the equivalent of Clyde drexler and Dominique Wilkins. Cam was the A.I that change the culture and created the demand for a running QB.

I agree with the core message, but I would balk with some of the comparisons being made here. Kyler was an exceptional runner, but the comp they saw with him was Drew Brees, because the dude had EXCEPTIONAL throwing accuracy and feel for the game. In his case, he would have gotten drafted high regardless. Russell was a peer to Cam. Justin Fields was used and viewed as a drop back passer at Ohio State. He wasn't viewed as a potential high level dual threat until his 40 at the combine, and even then his ability as a dual threat at the NFL level was just completely different than how he was used in college. Nevertheless, I agree with Cam opening the door for raw dual threat QBs to be actively drafted high and to be actively featured as a 1st or 2nd choice runner in the offense. Michael Vick would have these incredible running games, but that was usually featured off him dropping back. Not literally being used like a fullback, which say Cam or Josh is used. Still don't think that is a "good" thing though?

Steph and it’s not even a debate. Steph quite literally changed how the NBA has played the game. Look at what he has turned the 3 into. Now every team prioritizes the 3. Look at what the rockets did after they couldn’t beat Curry and the warriors. The rockets literally created a 3 point machine with 3-4 great 3 point shooters just to try and beat the warriors.

Play style I would say Patrick still has the edge. Everybody now is looking for the "Patrick Mahomes" prototype. Oft-platform arm talent to spread the field and just enough dual threat ability to extend plays and convert downs. And they are willing to take on projects like a Zach Wilson or Jordan Love or guys who ran simpler offenses like Air Raid to mold and do this. Also, youth coaches now are complaining about the kids wanting to throw off-platform like Patrick, in the way kids want to show Steph Curry long 3s. When Lamar came out, the comparison made wasn't Cam, but Vick - because the big vision with Vick was still to take a run first QB and convert them into a pass-first guy, which happened with Andy Reid. When RG3, a peer of Cam, came out, he was being compared with Vick. You can even make the case for Russell Wilson as a dual threat model. The only QB who aligns with what Cam is doing is Josh Allen, and that is still a point of controversy due to its sustainability. I think if you include the culture, yes I would take Cam but just on the game, it's still Pat.

@andrewchiu6226 i disgree. Mahomes is still arm talent first. Teams have always looked for elite arm talent. Look at JaMarcus russel. Can mahome be mobile? sure. But showed how hard a dual threat qb is to prepare for. Cam is why teams will still take run first qbs like lamar to see if they can learn to be passing first qbs too. The only way before cam a running qb got a fair shot was if they were elite speed like vick or lamar. Lamar is the only one who is comparable to vick speed. The reason is so mnay mobile qbs flamed out is because they werent as physical as cma ir as fast as lamar. But the reaosn they even got looked at is because cam was the first real successful run first ir run only qb. Even if only for a year. Maybe going forward mahomes qill chnage the game more. But the qb viewing philosophy was changed because of how dominant cam was even for as short a time as it was. All that being said imagine how many qbs trying crazy stuff will hear, "youre not mahomes!" Lmao

Steph just didn't know he could do it in the NBA without the system Kerr created for him. We saw how the Raptors defended Curry in the Finals when Durant and Klay were injured. The year Klay missed the whole year the Warriors made the play-in and lost to the Lakers, but even in that year the Warriors were under .500 in the games Curry didn't play which allowed them to be in that position in the first place. There has never been a time in Warriors history when Klay or Draymond did anything without Curry present. Every significant Curry injury resulted in a lot of losing. Curry needs Klay and Dray but when they are out the Warriors can at least be .500. It is hard to be good when 1/2 of the salary cap is out so the comparison isn't fair to any of the 3. It’s about the passing game along side being able to run like yeah there were QBs like Randall Cunningham, Michael Vick, Steve Young, who were either really good at one or the other but Patrick Mahomes is one of the best in each has the accuracyas well as the IQ which is what people are looking for now is “the next Patrick Mahomes nobody’s looking for the next Steph Curry they’re looking for the next Jordan, the next LeBron James

I'm trying to figure out why they keep comparing Mahomes to basketball players? There are only two athletes he compares too, he ain't there yet, but the only two people are Russell and Gretzky! Jordan, LeBron, Curry ain't doing these things! I love Curry, but he didn't change the game, just like when Magic and Bird came in, they didn't change it. The league allowed all 3 to succeed! Curry by the rules and taking out the big man. Magic and Bird by tv contract and more importantly the calls for superstars... don't argue, go fact check!

Thats not a fair comparison because Patty is CURRENTLY changing how to play QB. He’s the only QB to play fundamentally unsound and makes it work. With the cross body throws, no look passes, running around the backfield extending plays. Thats not fundamentally sound QB play but he’s perfected it so much so that anyone who tries to replicate it doesn’t workout as well.

No doubt, winning championships does help the impact/influence of how to play the game, to win. However, in Steph Curry’s case, he displayed that when shooting volume 3s at a high make percentage… it could have a major impact on winning basketball games. (And exploiting gravity and space that comes with shooting well, when far from the basket) If Steph was drafted to the Knicks, and never won a championship, he would still have been capable of displaying the impact of 3s in game… when basketball analyzers see his percentages and them winning games, they’d crunch the tradeoff from 2s to 3s, as well as when young kids watch a “short” appearing basketball player look cool pulling up from 30 feet and draining it consistently. He may not solely have the same impact if he didn’t win championships, but it would still have been similar influence with time.

I don't think so, i think they stayed on track. Mahomes hasnt changed the way qb is played.. curry has not only changed the way pgs play.. but now we want our pfs to be able to shoot the 3, and our centers to space the floor. Also to their point except shady, there were players b4 mahomes that can be credited IF the qb position is played.. but the most dominant style is still in the pocket

It’s clearly Curry and I’m a Chiefs fan!! And this is not a knock on Mahomes, but quite the opposite! There will be more people who will come in shooting from deep range like Curry, probably not as consistently, but will have the same style of play and will do it at a high level! But Mahomes is a one-of-one! You can’t influence what can’t be imitated!!

I would say Vick gave people the idea of having the QB run more as a threat. Cam was the proof of concept that you can reach the Superbowl without an elite passing game. BUT in terms of changing the game? What did people say when Cam lost? "If he could throw better..." so no change. Steph? Changed the conversation from "we need big physical guys in the paint" to "where the shooters at?" That is a big change in philosophy.

Mahomes was throwing left handed passes for conversions, revitalized the no-look pass, and threw every off-platform throw that would get a normal QB benched and on top of all that he was that guy out the gate (first year starting won MVP). I love Curry and he absolutely changed the game of basketball (was also a unanimous MVP I believe) but Mahomes did it in the biggest sport in America while being clutch in every Championship win.

It's Steph, but it's closer than I think some people would say. He has fundamentally changed the way NBA teams play offense, but Mahomes has influenced both sides of the ball in subtler ways. The more obvious one is that NFL defenses have loaded up and adjusted their schemes to defend him-first by taking away the deep ball, then by blitzing more often, now by taking away the sidelines, and he's managed to adjust as well. The less obvious one is that the AFC has tried their hardest to bring up superstar franchise QBs in his mold, in hopes of finding someone who can go toe to toe with him: Mayfield, Allen, Jackson, Lawrence, Tagovailoa, Burrow, Herbert, Stroud, Richardson, on and on.
