there are so many options out there alhamdulilah. you can do an apprenticeship to get a degree, or an apprenticeship with other qualifications, you can start off with a basic office job and work your way up, you can do training in soooo many different fields. let’s not kid ourselves and think that university is our only option to have a good career.

The UK government student loans are quite different. You don’t have pay back anything until you earn above a certain amount and then you pay 9% of your annual income above the threshold and the debt is written off after 30 years or if you die. It doesn’t affect your credit score and and you only pay when you work regardless of how much money you have. Very few people will ever have to pay the full amount let alone the interest. To compare this loan to a regular bank loan doesn’t make sense. It is more like a tax contribution scheme than a loan. I appreciate in America the situation is different. Allah knows best.

ur not taking into account that it is still money that you borrowed that you must pay back according to Islam, except youd have to pay interest which makes it haraam. Islamically we are expected to pay back our debts/ loans.

Asalamualaikum, I spoke to an Alim in the UK about interest as I’m applying for medicine, and he said that UK student loans are halal. Because they aren’t loans, rather they are investments, the word loan is used to psychologically make a person pay it back. The “interest” taken from it is given to a pool of money which is later “loaned” to other students. Also, I have no knowledge of this topic, and there was a conference in London by many Ullamah, where it was decided that UK SLC “loans” aren’t haram. I was still unsure, but he said that if an Alim misguides someone, the responsibility will be beared by him in the day of Qiyyamah, not the layman. So please speak to someone who has researched and has knowledge in Quran and Shariah. JZK brothers, may Allah grant us Hidayah and Jannatal Firdous ❤

If muslim students in USA don’t take loans 99% will NOT be ABLE to pursue education above high school. So basically don’t even try education, stay in poverty, and use government assistance for rest of your life. It does not make sense to me since knowledge and education is highly encouraged by Quran.

Here in Ontario, Canada, you can take a student loan with a government organization called OSAP, where there is no interest whatsoever until 6 months after you graduate from your community college/university program at least. Meaning if I for example started my studies in September 2014 and finished my degree in April 2018, there is no interest in that 4 year-ish time at all. Nothing. OSAP gives you six months after you graduate to pay off the entire loan without interest and then you're fine. They also make it easier that if you get a job with a specific salary range or something (I'm not sure what the conditions are) then you can defer the interest 6 months at a time. Some people can go a few years after graduation, still paying their student loan, with zero interest because of that deferrement that they can do. I alhamdulillah am in community college, where the tuition is very cheap and that I would only have to pay around 5000 Canadian Dollars once I graduate from my 2 year community college program insha'allah with no interest. This is for Ontario, Canada, I'm not sure about other provinces in Canada but this is what we have here.

Exactly same thing in California US Alhumdulillah. I studied in community College for 3 years. Now I have to study two and half year at UC Berkeley to get degree in civil engineering. I don't need to take student loan due to financial aid and some private scholarship. Alhumdulillah I can still take government subsidized student loan which I can pay back in 6 month after graduated without interest.

As far as I am concerned, it's not lawful to take such finance. In other words, what you are signing is that you are accepting the fact that you'll be paying interest if it exceeds the interest free period and you don't know for sure if it will exceed or not. I could be wrong, so do your research on that guys.

Because I spoke to the student loan department. They told that if someone dies the student loan is written off. Because the student is a grant from Government. But they put this repayment interest charges just to deter Muslims student joining universities. If you look at it is not interest as a such but again they put it something on it calling it interest. @@mhussein406 I get what you’re saying bro. That’s what I’m confused about as well. Riba is clearly haram. But we don’t have a clear-cut explanation if a student loan actually qualifies as being Riba. This might be the big change of our times. There were certain things and interpretations in the past where the majority of qualified Muslims at the time were giving fatwas about it being haram. Then all the future scholars gradually started moving away from those interpretations and they began giving halal fatwas for the issue because the times had changed so much. It’s most likely that the same will happen with “interest” in modern-day scenarios. It seems like in the near future, everyone will start saying that student loans are not the same as riba. May Allah protect us all from this fitna and guide us to the correct path on this doubtful matter.

My cousin who completed a nursing course with student loan is hesitant to work in the field ever since he came to know that it's haram to have studied using loan. His family was already struggling financially and had put all their hopes in him. Should he discard the nursing degree and start from scratch?

That is not an excuse. If you want to attend university then you’ll need to get help from family, or a Muslim community, or go to some sort of HALAL Islamic bank. Unless your life is threatened, going through haram means is not permissible otherwise.
