There seems to be this stereotype that studying engineering is hard. I’m not surprised that people think so because the internet is flooded with ridiculous memes. So in this video, I’m going to explain why engineering isn’t as hard as everyone makes it out to be with 6 reasons! Timestamps are as follows:

This was my biggest insecurity, not being smart enough to study engineering. I have hard work ethic, but I wasn't good at math growing up. I am now almost 28, starting school for EE. Thanks for the motivation.

Good for you, man! I'm the exact opposite. Always had a natural aptitude for maths and physics, but had exactly 0 motivation to improve upon them at the time. This only got worse as the courses got harder and I still had a bad foundation (which made me feel overwhelmed all the time) plus got frustrated way too soon when I couldn't do the intermediate practice problems or didn't learn the subject at first glance. That all changed once I decided to go back to college, tho. It just "clicked". The thing I was missing was context. I had no idea WHY I was studying all that stuff back in school, but now that I actually get to apply that hard earned knowledge and solve problems with whichever method I deem appropriate, I gotta say that I was missing out big time. Brings me joy like nothing else, and all the "hard" stuff is absolutely worth it once you know you're doing it for a higher cause. Each fail is a lesson learned, not a sign of stupidity.

I thought I was strong at math in high school, but then I went to university (in London) where the class was majority Chinese and Singaporean, and I got absolutely owned. With hindsight, it's crazy how little math is taught in British schools. I had to work my ass off to slowly catch up to my university classmates who were literally sleeping through every math class (or not showing up at all).

Before watching this video I was shocked at how you could have such a viewpoint. But you made some pretty good points to why it’s not so hard. I would agree that anyone can do engineering. But I’m not so sure about an engineering degree. Something I felt that was brushed over a little quickly was how it’s like putting 7/8 years of studying into 3/4 years. I think that’s what precisely makes an engineering degree so hard.

I think the defining recognition that must be made is that there is a difference between a difficult major and a high work load major. I think few would argue against engineering being a high workload major, but as far as engineering concepts go, many are not insanely challenging. Granted, I haven't gotten to a lot of the higher level courses yet, so maybe I'm completely wrong, but so far through my college career, I've found what is said in this video to be very true. Prior knowledge is crucial, but with a good foundation, it's not that engineering is hard, it's that all of the other majors compared to engineering are ridiculously easy.

Totally agree with this, if you want a really hard degree study math or physics lmao. I'm in my junior year of mechanical engineering and decided to get a math minor as it's only 2 extra courses. Both of the math classes I took were way more involved than most of the math I have done in engineering. Writing up an induction proof or learning graph theory can be very abstract and intangible. All the math in engineering directly relates to the real world and I feel like it makes it 10 times easier to solve.

I ended up dropping out of college because the base physics class (physics 211 general physics mechanics at Penn State) made 0 sense to me and I dropped it 3 consecutive semesters because no matter how much I studied, I'd score no more than a 30% on tests. I learned none of what was in the class in highschool and the way they taught the course made it feel like you just needed to be some sort of genius savant who knew everything from birth. The breaking point was during covid when we were allowed to attend campus but had to do classes online. My apartment had no desks, and the only table we had was covered in trash because my 3 roommates were dirtballs despite being English majors and having hours and hours worth of extra time to clean up after themselves. I couldnt focus because I had to do my work laying down so no matter how many hours I studied I couldn't fully focus. I did great in math *until* covid. I failed calc 1 in my first semester, got the highest grade in the class in the next semester because i hunkered down, did great in trigonometry. Differential equations fucked me. The best class I had was chemistry. First semester I did just as bad in chemistry as I did in the other physics class. Second semester I buckled down and got the best grade in the class, then I got the best grade in the follow up advanced class. But I never found the same luck with physics no matter how much I studied or how I studied, and every chemistry based major I could do *required* the physics class I couldnt pass in order to graduate. So yeah, if I could ever describe what Hell is like, Engineering college is HELL. Most STEM majors are HELL.

I feel like it really depends on where you study. I’m a third year mech E student at probably the highest rated university in Germany for technological degrees and I can tell you that even the smartest of the smartest are struggling here. I know guys who were straight A students with no effort in Highschool who are failing many exams or are even dropping out and not because of their work ethic but because of the level of difficulty of certain courses. The exams get harder every year. I’ve had situations where I would study a lot for and ace old exams and practice questions but in the end still end up failing the test. One of my friends is studying civil E at a lower rated college but technically he has the same math courses. He once showed me one of their exams and compred to what I have to deal with it looked like a Highschool pop quiz. Last but not least I have to say that I don’t mean to brag about how good my university is or anything like that. If you really want to study engineering but have doubts about your abilities and skills not being enough to achieve the degree, study at a lower rated college and you will probably be fine. It will still be harder than what most of your friends from school will be doing in other majors but I‘d say it’s achievable with the right work ethic and will power. Studying at a renowned university or college has its perks, especially when it comes to your career entry salary but don’t make your life harder than it should be. If you believe in yourself and have the dream of being an engineer you have to commit to it.

Studying engeering is not hard. The thing is, University the way it works is quantity over quality, meaning that they dont guide you with the real knowledge you need to organize your mind. In other words, University bombs you with concepts, so you end up not having your mind organized (meaning you only know how to solve book examples). Just knowing bareley superficial concepts that you remember to have studied at one point on your life, but dont end up assimilating.

I think most students just don't get how to study engineering. Most of my friends do study groups and solve lots of problems I mean lots! All the book problems all the old exams. They end up with good grades but sometimes on different idea in the exam throws all of them off. I've seen it happen more than once. The way I studied which worked great for me for all my engi curses. Was to just understand the concept. I would sometimes sit on concept for more than an hour without writing a single thing. After I'm familiar with the concept and how it came to be I try to solve the example and compare the answers. More than not I'm right first time. That's why I never brought 'cheat sheets' cause if I can develop the equation from its fundamental law (whether its conservation of mass or energy or whatever) no need to memorize. The only advice I would give a engineering student is understand the concept not the numbers
@grjesus9979
@grjesus9979 2 жыл бұрын
@@azez2218 Totally agree. But the thing is, University dont give you much depth and time to deeply understand a concept, so it is up to the student to choose what to learn and what not. Also the books and other resources are not that much of help since they assumed you know certain things that you really dont know, making it harder trying to understand a concept. As for me, i think university gives a very high overview of what engeeniring looks like, making their student to not think to much and be good at programable task (meaning that you know the recipe of how to do it, yet you dont quite understand it).

It is hard. A degree being hard is not only about how smart you have to be to graduate from it (in fact I don't think this is the main reason), but about the skills it requires you to have and how hard it is to get those skills in our society. Other degrees like laws or medicine are not easy, but they require you to memorize a lot of concepts that may be easier to grasp to humans, and we usually get a better preparation on humanistics related subjects in school, since they are easier to study for (attending lectures, reading, memorizing, etc.), and we can relate more to them. However subjects like math and physics generally aren't taught very well in school, as they contain much more abstract concepts that depend one with each other, so for most people understanding math requires a lot of patience, building knowledge brick by brick, and doing a ton of exercises. Developing abstract and logical thinking is not easy for the mayority of people, because we are not used to it and we are not taught how to do so in schools. For most of us, this isn't how we naturally think! This is, in my opinion, the main reason degrees like engineering are way harder than degrees like laws or psychology. The way we learn matters a lot, and the way we learn is, most of the time, conditioned by the way we were taught to learn (and think about problems) in school. If we don't have good problem solving skills and the ability to think things in a abstract way, math and physics are probably going to be really hard in the long run. The good thing is, we can always re-learn how to learn ;) So yeah, in my opinion, engineering is definetely hard. But that doesn't mean that it is impossible, or that you need a high IQ to do it :) and it obviously doesn't mean that they can't be people who are just naturally good at it too. BTW, sorry if my English is a bit messy, I'm a native Spanish speaker :)

Question from those with more study experience, if you learn something in class is it better to recap it later that same day or recap it the day after? I guess the same day means it's real fresh so you won't forget. Doing it on the next day means it isn't as fresh, but you have a nights sleep between so your brain may be more geared up to remember it on a long time frame. What do we think is the better option to maximise productivity if you have little spare time to study (please don't say both, lol, I know both is obvs going to be the best)?

Thanks so much for making this video, I live in the U.S. in Seattle and am currently a sophomore. My state allows high school juniors and seniors to go into a program called running start. Where you can take college classes at a community college and earn an associate's or credits to transfer to a 4-year college. I plan on doing this but need to declare a major, I researched engineering and thought that one of the subtypes (specifically materials science engineering) would be a good fit. However, I got really nervous with everyone on the internet saying that engineering is for geniuses, or that it's the hardest major and almost no one can do it, or that if math isn't your strongest subject you shouldn't even attempt it... You, however, restored my faith that I can do engineering not because it's easy but because I can work hard and succeed. Thanks so much this video means a lot to me.

This is life. Some things are very rewarding but relatively "difficult", given a variety of reasons; you must work to accomplish challenging goals. Whether it be by intellectual challenge, workload, or both, you simply have to chisel away at it.

I do agree practice makes perfect, especially for math. But i just want to make everyone aware that there is something called dyscalculia. If u find that grasping simple math concepts are extremely hard. You look into it, and see that youre not alone. Im pretty sure there a progams that help people with dyscalculia, so never say never.

Depending on what type of Engineering you are talking about, some majors may be easier than others. However, for medicine, there are so many abstract things you have to learn and the workload is heavier because of the complexity of the human body.

1:12 im in med school in the Netherlands and our schedule is the one on the right, but without the gaps, and with an extra hour. 8 AM to 17 PM every day, and when u get back home u often have homework as well. Its ridiculous. The first 3 years were 80% free time tough, so it does compensate. Also med school is extremely easy compared to any engineering degree, its mostly memorization.

In my opinion it becomes hard because of the pacing of schedules for exams and quizzes because I have a prof where in he wants us to finish early all the time! Which means he doesn’t really give us enough time to learn the material and he ends up piling the study load because we also happen to have another exam on another math major on the same day! When supposedly this prof and his subject is supposed to be doing the exams at a much later date.

Does anyone here feel like they don't know anything? I'm in my last year, and I study hard and do well on the exams. When the class finishes, I feel like I immediately forget everything. Also, during many of my classes, I feel like I know nothing, and then everything just "clicks" during the exam and I do really well. It's disheartening because I get really good grades but I feel like I don't deserve them.

Firstly, I must say that I have quite enjoyed the content of your past videos as they were quite entertaining and educational. This video was quite confusing for me because there are a few things I am trying to understand from your standpoint. Firstly, yes engineers may have the same amount of social standing as doctors and lawyers, but not as much as you think. Secondly, they certainly DO NOT have the same salary or even coming close to the other two professions (even after 10 years of professional experience knowing that engineering salaries increases with time). Thirdly, engineering is hard because if the teachers are shit, you have to teach yourself the content. Then, it is no longer just a function of your intelligence or hardwork but more of how much time you have to allocate yourself (and as you've pointed out, engineering students barely have time with those busy schedules) Also, note that if teachers do not curve, nobody is passing the class. However, if they do, you failed at understandind the concepts yet you technically pased the course all thanks to the curving. I took engineering courses during cegep (Quebec system) and I can assure you that 16 weeks of classes allowed for a more fluid transfer of material from the professors to the students than a regular 12 ½ weeks of University semester. That's just my 2 cents.
@TamerShaheen
@TamerShaheen 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your 2 cents and I actually agree with what you’re saying! The main purpose of this video to illustrate that engineering is doable as it’s not about “smarts”, but it’s about work ethic.

Hell no nothing is hard or difficult in study and life it is just YOU that keep holding on to your pleasure and don't want to let go . They want to enjoy that's why they see studying as suffering and difficult but if you let go of your stupid self destruct pleasure in games , movies ,sex , addiction than you will see study as the most beneficial things in life and you will see things differently. I remember people always say dude it will be difficult for you t study science stream since you are art class but the truth is it isn't difficult for me because it is my hobby and it became my life's work. The only thing I love is study and work while my friends and my brother will think of games while studying as if they still need it to survive and they say life is difficult to handle because there's still tiny part of you rejecting the responsibility and the hard work you need to do, so accept it and than you will see you can do far more than you could ever had . I am speaking from experience but idk is it the same for you guys . Just find the the right side of mindset and motivation 💪👌
