Galaxy 2 is not a bad game, not in the slightest! But there is just a magical feeling thats missing in this game that the first game did have though. Galaxy 2 is just more optimized for gameplay, meaning you get to blitz trough the levels. And while the designs get more creative, the first game was more about exploring.

Man its hard. I genuinely think if both games were to combine it would've been the perfect Mario game ever. I truly think the power ups and gameplay in Galaxy 2 are just iconic and so fun, and if they just had that fun with the emotion Galaxy 1 brings, then thats truly your perfect game. I never even knew 2 was a retelling, but now that I know this it just hurts! The Evil Luma using Mario and going for revenge, somehow bringing the comet observatory right next to Marios head and being able to visit it from a launch star (or maybe even designing it into a level while its under attack couldve been a cool stage for this betrayal and boss fight.) Ditching the big purple loaf to have Rosalina be the new tour guide, and maybe even continue her story from the first game or having a new element for closure. I want to love Galaxy 2, but what they dont do really hits too hard for it to be considered a good sequel imo. Revisiting Galaxy 1 recently after 10 some years left me disappointed to find out that some of my favorite Galaxy memories (gameplay wise only) were from 2!
@vDREEGONv6 ай бұрын
I actually think the intro of Galaxy 2 is quite genius. You start off in 2D to reflect Mario's last adventure most likely being Super Mario Bros.Wii or just mainline Mario games usually being 2D. It's peaceful at first but then as you make your way to Peach's castle you see Bowser has taken control of it, almost as if you are discovering it for yourself once you make it there instead of the game telling you through a cutscene. It's a genuine surprise. In 2D Mario games you never run around Peach's castle, it's just kinda there, so once you make it to the castle the 3D element is introduced to let you know this is gonna be a 3D Mario adventure. I think calling the opening uninspired is missing a lot of the symbolism actually used in it. And while Galaxy 1's opening was beautiful and iconic I always felt it lacked a bit of color, something Galaxy 2 kinda fixes by using more popping colors. Galaxy 1 also makes it look like the mushroom kingdom is on a small planet, not really being faithful to how it looks in other games, but Galaxy 2 fixes that by making it actually look like the mushroom kingdom which makes it truly feel like you are stepping from the mainline mario games universe into a interstellar adventure, where in Galaxy 1 it kinda feels like it was always in a different universe than other mario games cause of how it looked. Galaxy 1's opening is definitely still better cause of how grand and beautiful it is, but Galaxy 2's opening does a lot more than you'd think at first and improves certain elements as well.

Exactly! Bring in the most iconic gameplay elements of both games and add a couple more..give every single Galaxy a sense of life and a real place rather than obstacles in the sky. I loved Galaxy 1 because almost every level either felt like someone's home planet, or you were on desolate trash. Aesthetic continuity was the driving factor of that first game forsure, and just having that in 2 would've easily made it top the 1st one. But Miyomoto just doesn't think like that apparently. Wow, I watched your Super Mario Galaxy video just yesterday. Great timing! In my opinion, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the better game mechanically. However, Super Mario Galaxy is great for an amalgamation of things. The atmosphere, soundtrack and story were just as important as the gameplay to make Super Mario Galaxy what it is and, aside from the OST, the sequel lacks in these departments. I don't even feel in space while playing Super Mario Galaxy 2. In any case, it's still a very good game.

I highly disagree though; I think music im Galaxy 2 is better and I love its atmosphere more than 1 for how happy and classicy it feels. I agree quite a bit that the story is... story. Inshort, I think 2 is the best game in the series (my fav game of all time) with how gameplay go so far where it kinda lacks with story and such. I agree with a lot of what you said but a couple of places where we deviate: 1. Yes, Mario Galaxy 2 has less story and atmosphere but I don't find it disappointing. I think it's a great tradeoff. 1 has more emotion and complete story, 2 has more fun levels. The linear world map I'm ok with but I guess I like linear things more than most. I like seeing how close I am to the end of something as motivation to keep going. And it also seemed like they knew we had gone through the emotional wringer of the first one and made it clear they were not looking to do that again, just wanted us to enjoy the cool new levels, and I'm fine with that. Don't get me wrong, the emotion of the first game really moved me, but I didn't need it in the sequel, and I realize it's rare to put that in a Mario game, so I'm used to not judging Mario games based on that. 2. I am not a fan of the final Bowser fight. I think in a final boss fight there are 2 major components: presentation and actual challenge. Often games will use a masterful presentation to hide the fact that the boss is easy as fuck. And I think that's what happened here. Yes, it did look really cool, don't get me wrong. But it was painfully easy. I felt no sense of challenge at all trying to kill Bowser, just the illusion of challenge. And yes, the battle style was creative, but it couldn't make up for the lack of challenge to me. Bowser was also kind of easy in the final boss fight in SMG1 but I felt like you were usually still going to die a few times first, especially if you took victory for granted. In this one, I'm not sure I ever die when facing Bowser, it feels like a joke, and I feel like it undermines the grand presentation of the fight. I was kind of hoping you would have at least mentioned in passing how easy the fight was. But I think your main points I totally agree with. It's not a bad sequel and it's a tremendous game. It could have done more story/atmosphere wise. I'm not sure it needed to to make me happy but yeah, it could have made it more special had they put in the extra effort to craft a more complete story. And maybe that is worth talking about. Maybe this game could have been one to bring us to tears too.

In Galaxy 1 1: Good Egg, Honeyhive, Sweet Sweet, Robot Reactor 2: Space Junk, BattleRock, Star Reactor, Rolling Green, Hurry Scurry 3: Beach Bowl, Ghostly, Buoy Base, Bubble Breeze 4: All of them 5: All of them 6: All of them (except snowcap) The original had fewer galaxies but each of the main ones felt like they were given more depth in comparison. I just don't find many of 2's galaxies to be that memorable. I'd give Galaxy a 10/10 and Galaxy 2 a 6/10

Galaxy 2 is my favorite game of all time, but admittedly it's only a sequel in concept. I think they wanted to do a sequel but also needed to make it different, and so they traded in the atmosphere and story of the first game for far expanded upon everything else. The gameplay mechanics, level design, music and difficulty are all cranked up to 11 where all those things (except the music) were more so in the 8-9 range in Galaxy 1. I'd argue that there is still atmosphere, just a completely different one than what Galaxy 1 had. Where Galaxy 1's atmosphere was deep, quiet and peaceful in a way, Galaxy 2 has an energetic and exciting atmosphere that matches all the cool new stuff and ideas that are taking place and honestly this invokes a serious sense of joy and magic when playing the game. It really depends on what kind of person you are as to which you prefer but both are undeniably masterpiece 10/10 games and always will be.

This might be a slightly unconventional opinion, but i actually think that SMG2s story mirrors SMG1s quite brilliantly. Sure, there's a few hiccups during the opening, but keeping a lot of it as subtext served the story quite well. Lubba getting to see Rosalina again was genuinely touching, even if Lubba as a character might have been a little unexplored. Also, one detail I remember quite fondly was how, whenever you are on a space near a worldportal on the map, the portal itself actually showed up on the faceship skybox. It's the little things like that that made young me absolutely fall in love with, not just SMG, but its sequel as well. (P.S. Galaxy 1 still reigns supreme in terms of storytelling, soundtrack, atmosphere, etc. But where Galaxy 2 shines is in replayability. I don't think any of the levels in Galaxy 2 were unfair or annoying to complete (except some of the green stars and perfect run.) In addition, the timer that appears after every mission makes it fun to try for new best times, even on levels that aren't racing based. Finally, the green stars were a much better way to unlock the final level compared to replaying the entire game, cutscenes, textboxes, and all in the first game. some of Galaxy 2's levels do feel like they are obstacle courses floating in the sky though, and the frequent use of the "blue sky and clouds" skybox really sells that feeling. However, they are still much more fun to replay than some of the stars in the first game. I still like Galaxy 1 more though but would replay both any day.

I think Super Mario Galaxy 2 is to Super Mario Galaxy what Tears of the Kingdom is to Breath of the Wild, a sequel that builds upon the original with more ideas, more content, and just overall a bigger game, but nowhere near as innovative or creative as the original (even though Super Mario Galaxy 2 has slightly better level design than Galaxy 1 imo). That being said, I like Super Mario Galaxy 2 more than 1 for Yoshi, the levels and the soundtrack, and I like Breath of the Wild more for it’s creative innovation, the 'fresh new world exploration' (Tears of the Kingdom did a good job at reusing the same world, but no matter how much they changed it doesn’t change the fact that I’ve been in this same world before, and the first time around exploring this world WAS a fresher and more intruiging experience than revisiting the same world with new clothes).

For all the game's faults in terms of storytelling and atmosphere, I just appreciate how Mario Galaxy 2 gave us one of the most batshit insane Bowser fight. That almost looked like something straight out of Bayonetta. It is criminal that this game didn't get included in the 3D All-Stars

I think I’d disagree with the idea that galaxy 2 has no atmosphere or is lacking in it. Rather instead it simply goes for something different. Galaxy 1 has a melancholic and dark (in the literal sense) atmosphere, it takes a more grounded idea of space. While I’d argue that galaxy 2 was simply going for something a bit brighter and more colourful. I think the best way to see the difference is in the box art. Galaxy 1 has the dark backdrop of space while galaxy 2 has a bright blue sky. Furthermore you equate story and level design as equal. While it certainly depends on the game, I’d argue in Mario games in particular the gameplay and level design is far more important. That’s not to say the story of galaxy 1 should have not wait and lack of one in galaxy 2 doesn’t matter, all I mean is I’d argue (as you said yourself) that galaxy 2 has much better levels and improved gameplay which imo is more important than it having a compelling story.

I think galaxy 2 is meant to be a more simplified version of Mario Galaxy like in a traditional lore format while Mario Galaxy 1 has a deep lore narrative

i like starship mario way more than the comet observatory for 2 reasons: - It’s a lot easier and faster to navigate to different levels (it’s literally just one button) - There’s so much more to do on it. Comet observatory didn’t even have any starbits on it!

I’ve seen lots of people bring up how Galaxy 2’s story isn’t as good as the original’s and I’d just like to say to everyone that it’s the same as the original’s so I have no clue what makes Galaxy 2’s story not as good. Also the only reason the Star Festival happened again is because of the Universe Reset essentially resetting the Universe thus technically 100 have passed since the first game because the Universe reset. Also also, I saw somewhere that apparently Lubba was supposed to have a backstory but it got cut I think? Also also also, currently the closest we have to a backstory for Lubba is the fact that him and Rosalina know each other
@Cheddar_WizardАй бұрын
It is absolutely and unequivocally not the same. The presentation is far more epic in Galaxy 1, from the cutscenes, to the music. I’m not sure what you’re talking about and it makes you sound like you didn’t pay any attention when playing the first game.
@generalcrab0009Ай бұрын
@@Cheddar_Wizard It’s the exact same story. Bowser kidnaps Peach. Creates a galaxy in the centre of the universe. Mario must travel to the centre of the universe to save Peach. It’s the *exact* same damn thing. Galaxy 1 just has extra flair, because why retell the exact same story the exact same way for a second time?
@Cheddar_WizardАй бұрын
@@generalcrab0009 Buddy, it’s the EXACT same story every Mario game. Does not mean presentation and story beats can change, like the star festival being crashed by Bowser and Peach’s castle being abducted, the somber moment when the Lumas sacrifice themselves to save the galaxy, when Bowser’s Galaxy Reactor theme plays when you approach Bowser’s final platform… Is nuance really that difficult for you to comprehend? And you seriously liked your own misinformed comment?
@generalcrab0009Ай бұрын
@@Cheddar_Wizard Exactly. It’s the exact same story every single time. Galaxy isn’t unique. It’s literally just the generic story with space theming. Also, I didn’t like my comment.

@@generalcrab0009 You are truly dense dude. Did you even read the first half of my comment? When in Galaxy 2 do the Luma’s sacrifice themselves? When does that ever happen in any Mario game for that matter? Just because the overarching story is the same (rescue Princess Peach does not mean every story beat, theme, and journey is the same, as is apparent from what I just said about Galaxy 1. Again, you are clearly not mentally acute enough to understand nuance, themes, and story moments.

One thing I loved about the first Galaxy is actually how different it was to everything that came before it, but it definitely still felt like a Mario game. Galaxy 2 added back a lot of those elements that weren't in the first one (yoshi, checkpoint flags, the world map, a lot more music tracks from older games than the first game, and literally importing an entire level from 64), and many of the new elements in that game (i.e. those red & blue sided platforms that flip when you spin) became mainstays in future games, making the game feel less special overall. Also, the soundtrack in Galaxy 2 is much more generic and less inspired than the first game. Not to mention that there are a handful of things from the first game that are just not in the 2nd game at all, like the Red Star. The only two times I felt any emotion playing the 2nd game was during Cosmic Cove Galaxy and hearing Bowser's Galaxy Reactor at the end of The Perfect Run.

Hey, I enjoyed this video once I realized it was more of a review of the game, despite certain disagreements with how we view it, but I was sort of surprised of how little the idea of what makes a good sequel was discussed at all in the video. Maybe it’s reductive to summarize, but the conclusion I drew was that your answer was like “sure I guess it depends on your taste idk” rather than talking about the nature of video game sequels and why this game in particular is an interesting case study. It felt like the title is misleading or maybe the vision of this essay got lost somewhere. Sort of irritating, but I still appreciate the effort put in.

I love Galaxy 1 and 2 both equally. I got special memories with Galaxy 1 because when my brother and I were kids we played it together and these are some of the unforgettable moments you never get back. Galaxy 2 brought so much more new Ideas but the Story overall was very stupid. Before Mario Odysee only Galaxy 1 had a really good Story of all 3d Mario Games. There are some things the first game does better while on the other side the sequel stands out for creatively changes. Both masterpieces on their own whose level, ideas, atmosphere, music and gameplay mechanics complete each other. In my opinion the Galaxy games are the best Mario Games!!

No offense man, but are you sure about that final Bowser fight? I've heard people call it one of Bowser's worst final fights because that second phase is way too easy. But I still respect your opinion of course.
@NuiYabuko Жыл бұрын
The problem is that people online usually view those things through only difficulty, easy - bad, difficult - good, when there's so much more to it.
@avocadeous Жыл бұрын
Difficulty isn’t the only problem imo. Bowser is easy in 1, but that feels like a better final boss because it feels like bowser is pulling all the stops. He utilises most of the skills that you have learnt in game in order to create a boss that feels like a test of your skills. Bowser will turn into one of those rock things that you see in the first level, he’ll turn into a spiky ball which you need to use the green plants to counter and he’ll spin attack you, which you can counter with your own spin. Galaxy 2 doesn’t have this. It’s simply the same fight as before, but with more lasers and fire, which we’ve already seen. The setting is also a big point. In galaxy 1, you’re in the center of the universe. You can see the massive reactor whilst you’re fighting. In galaxy 2, you’re in the same void you were in that last two times. The difficulty is the cherry on the cake here. There are other factors, like the buildup and payoff, but I’m only focusing on the fight itself here.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 (imo) is an absolute gift. It’s almost the absolute perfect platforming type game. They genuinely take everything possible from the previous game and make it even better. I much enjoy the story and much enjoy how they added levels from the original game to World S. I actually really like the HUB and very much like how you go from level to level. There are things I like more about Galaxy 1, but more I like about Galaxy 2. I’d go as far as to say Galaxy 2 is my FAVORITE game of all time.

The problem about Galaxy 2 for me is not only atmosphere and story, but also how little each Galaxy is explored. Each Galaxy only has 3 stars max, one of them being a comet. The progression we got in Honeyhive or Battlerock is just absent, and semi-open spaces open for exploration is also nonexistent other than Starshine Galaxy. Galaxy 2 might still have better levels individually, sure, but does it have a better collection of levels? Not necessarily so.
@callinater6133 Жыл бұрын
On the other hand, galaxy 1 has a crap ton of 1 star galaxies. The galaxies with 6/7 stars only make up 15 of the galaxies. It’s give or take really.
@joshuachang5210 Жыл бұрын
@@callinater6133 It's not give or take. Galaxy 1's approach makes more sense because some galaxies are better as 1-offs and some have more room for exploration. Galaxy 2 tries to fit every galaxy in the same mold, and in the end made some galaxies underutilized and some galaxies containing irrelevant missions (Melty Monster Galaxy being the most obvious example).

I will love both games for different reasons, some shared, some not. The fabulous mystique of the original, or the incredibly fun galaxies of the second one. The sense of loneliness mixed in with beauty of the original, or the whimsical and wonderful environments of the second one. I am glad that Super Mario Galaxy 2 decided not to be 1 but again, exploring different concepts of the boundless posibilities of the cosmos was done in very beautiful ways in both games.

I’ve never played part one and tried to on an emulator but the controls make it a bit hard to emulate and I don’t have my Wii remote anymore to connect so I still haven’t played Mario galaxy 1 but Part 2 was the game I fully completed with the exception of 1 star (my brother kept erasing my file though he was younger and didn’t know better) and man I replayed it over and over again. It was amazing to me plus the music was probably the best of any Mario series. I think I enjoyed this music over anything else

Galaxy 2 to me was just as good as Galaxy 1. I remember being excited when someone told me there was gonna be a sequel and counting down the weeks until release once I found out the release date. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and it was the highlight of one of my middle school years My only complaint is like you said with the atmosphere and background. There seemed to be more levels with blue skies and clouds than starry sky levels which takes away the whole “galaxy/spacey” aesthetic. All in all though, it was a solid game that holds a special place in my heart ❤️

I really hope that Nintendo makes all Mario Games available on Switch. At this point, they know how much their customers crave for these games. However, I also understand that the resources they have need to be considered, and not everything can be done at the same time. And they always need to check if they can provide them in the quality they originally had, and if and how this quality can be improved. Nintendo, please take my money 😢 Edit: Forgot to mention that I love your videos, and if Nintendo doesn’t pay you, they really should. Every time I see one of your videos, I want to play the games instantly 😂 Good job 😊

I grew up with the first Galaxy was a huge part of my childhood. Galaxy 2 on the other hand I had never played because I only had ever owned the first game. The biggest problem with sequels in my opinion is the fact that they can either make or break a series. A sequel has a lot to live up to when it's in the shadow of the best games ever made. When this said sequel is announced people hype it up and have massive expectations. This can lead to disappoint because people were expecting more. Or they thought it wasn't enough to satisfy them. On the other hand if you have a bad first game many may believe the sequel will be the same which isn't always true. SMG2 experienced the first way. Where it had so much to live up to and may have soured some people's expectations. Since it wasn't what they wanted. This of course does not mean it's a bad game. it's rated almost just as high as SMG1 which is Insane! SMG2 was indeed a success for a sequel. It's always important to set expectations because you never know what your gonna get. Some may like it while others may not. What's most important is if the game builds in what it did so great and tries to go even higher. I think this is what exactly SMG2 did. It succeed in doing what the first game did so great in it's own new way! I have never played it though but judging from what people have said it seems just as incredible as SMG1. I plan on watching this video once I play SMG2. I love these videos so don't worry I'llbe back.😂 I can't wait to play the sequel to my childhood game. To see what made it so special just like the first game was for me.
