Yes, of course Techno has desires that he always works towards, but when it comes to "honor" and remaining consistent in how he does things, he fails utterly. The only modicum of consistency he displays in when advocating for personal freedom and when disrespecting authority

@@rainbowlemniscate2761 Lawful characters are still people and they still have emotions and therefore sometimes go against their personal codes or morals when in they feel particularly strong emotions such as the death of a loved one/all of their cows, and techno when he eventually calmed down didn't kill George because it was his emotions controlling his actions not his code. As for the festival, he was put into a much different situation then he was expecting so of course the plan changed to accommodate the new environment, lawful doesn't mean idiot. Also he absolutely has honor he never stabbed anyone in the back he was clear and concise in his intentions and motivations and that he would destroy any government as to prevent corruption.

In this case you could argue that Techno is loyal to the laws of anarchy as well as his personal beliefs. Chaotic alignments tend to be more flexible and subject to their whims, but Techno's motivations have been very consistent. It may have seemed chaotic to summon two withers against his former allies, but he did it because they had used him in a way that went against his personal beliefs. He fought alongside them to overthrow a government, but when they set up a new one in its place they effectively betrayed him and what he stood for. Again, this is just friendly discourse! *Counter Argument: He's neither.* 1) Techno follows a specific ideal- not necessarily a code. His main goal is to stop the government but it's just that- a goal. A chaotic character may still have a similar "main goal" like this, which drives their actions most of the time. It doesn't necessarily mean they're lawful, just that they're heavily motivated and that their actions and identity are heavily linked to one main goal. Basically, his "lawfulness" isn't attributed to a _code_ , rather a driving desire to destroy the government. 1.5) In addition to this, chaotic characters can have lines- things they will do, things they won't do, etc. The best example of this is a chaotic character who doesn't kill or murder. They'll injure people, they'll commit arson and torture and terrify, but they wont commit murder themselves. Just because someone has hard rules / limits / desires doesn't necessarily mean that they're lawful. 1.5.5) A lot of the arguments I see here are "Techno has a code of ethics", which is a kind of moral code or key set of values. Which I understand entirely, but it's just that- ethics. Morality. Good and Evil. Techno's motivations fit into the Good / Neutral / Evil category of the chart, not necessarily the Lawful / Neutral / Chaotic part, which dictates how the characters achieve their goals. 1.5.5.5) I'm gonna get a lot of people arguing with this one, but hear me out. Lawful characters should follow a set of laws imposed by a group or by society. Be that the Hunter Code for a morally gray ranger, a Deity's code for a cleric, or even just the laws of society. _Everyone_ has things they will or will not do. That just comes with being human. People won't do things they think are morally wrong except for extenuating circumstances. Therefore once we've established that Lawful characters specifically follow an external set of rules as opposed to an internal one, we can see that Techno is very much Not Lawful. 2) This being said, he doesn't exactly fit the bill for chaotic either. Chaotic characters are more likely to achieve their goals _while_ creating chaos, or achieve their goals in an atypical way in order to create more chaos. As mentioned in the video, Techno doesn't always seem to do things for the sake of the chaos, more so chaos is a result of his actions. 3) Resulting chaos should also be factored somewhere into the chaotic argument though; while it can be argued that Techno's main goal isn't chaos, that doesn't mean he doesn't often intend for chaos to occur, and knowingly and happily cause chaos regularly. 4) This is where things get tricky: defining what the alignment chart means. Because while the _book_ gives a lot of the abstract concepts listed in the video, it's purposely vague. But we can dive a little deeper by establishing that Good / Neutral / Evil set a character's desires and motivations, while Lawful / Neutral / Chaotic establish HOW they accomplish those goals and desires. Sticking to your beliefs and morals doesn't make you lawful. But abiding by a code that governs your actions/ how you achieve your goals even (and this is important) when it hurts you or impedes your progress on said goals? That's what makes a lawful character. 4.5) You wouldn't say that a Chaotic character regularly deviates from what they want, right? You wouldn't say that a Chaotic character hardly obeys their own set of morals, right? It's more about the methods through which they achieve their goals, not necessarily how strongly they believe in their cause or goal. 5) The abstract concepts mentioned from the PHB in the video are good definitions in general, but they get a little complicated the more and more human / ambiguous a character gets. But one really, really important thing to remember is that Neutral characters are basically supposed to be the embodiment of whatever extreme they go to. Chaotic Neutral? Their only goal is to cause chaos. Neutral Evil? Their only goal is to, well, be evil (or impede the party, but the 9 square alignment chart gets pretty tangled as you take it out of a D&D context). Lawful Neutral? Their goal is to follow their law or code, *and they place that law or code over what their own goals are, or what they believe is right / wrong.* Technoblade believes the government is wrong, and therefore any Lawful or Chaotic restrictions that you'd put on him would conflict with that main goal. *Here comes my argument: He's True Neutral.* 6) Preface this by reiterating what the original creator talked about at 5:24. People are more complicated than a nine square box. They're not going to fit perfectly, no matter what you do. That's part of why I, personally, see Techno as True Neutral. He doesn't (again, in my opinion) fit into any of the other categories enough to qualify placing him there. 7) I mostly agree with what the video said in terms of what makes him Neutral in terms of good/bad, but disagree with the statement that Neutral characters will fluctuate between Good and Evil (I talked about it a little bit above, but I can't go into it too much because of space). 8) Neutral in terms of Lawful / Neutral / Chaotic is typically defined as following the character's "law" (or code, whichever is applicable) until it impedes them from their goals, in which they switch to more chaotic methods (or methods that break whatever law is imposed upon them). With this definition in mind, it seems that Techno is very True Neutral: for the most part following the law (again, a term which I use liberally) until it's not helpful to him or actively gets between him and his goal. 9) True Neutral's whole thing is that whatever the True Neutral character deems important is what is the Most Important, and they'll try and achieve that goal through whatever means necessary. In this case, Techno's goals are (probably) 1. Destroying the government and 2. Protecting Phil. They don't care about _anything_ else that strongly, just that their goals are accomplished and that they / the people they care about are safe / happy. *In Conclusion* I can totally see either side of the argument, but to me Techno seems more True Neutral than Lawful Neutral or Chaotic Neutral.
@OwenOfElliott4 жыл бұрын
I'd argue that you're raising the bar too high, true neutral isn't the "none of the above" option, that's unaligned (though tends to be reserved for creatures too stupid for morals) it's not just that techno has rules, it's that he's funded and destroyed the same revolution just to stick to his principle. Tbh I'd argue that he's lawful evil, using his principle to do the evil, though there introduction of technocrat as cannon muddies that a bit. And I absoloutely disagree that lawfulness must be imposed externally, we all have things we don't *want* to do but a lot of people are willing to compromise with it, lawful people not among them.
@augurly4 жыл бұрын
@@OwenOfElliott I totally get what you mean about the true neutral being "none of the above", I just kinda feel like it's more ambiguous than lawful / chaotic (in the sense that Techno's too chaotic for a lawful character and too lawful for a chaotic character). Again, my interpretation of Techno's character only really fits if you view alignment as Good/ Neutral/ Evil for motive and Lawful/ Neutral/ Chaotic for method, which is how I usually interpret the alignment chart. That was my argument for most of 1 through 5- that Techno's "rule" isn't actually a rule or a code, it's just "I believe that government is wrong, and therefore want to destroy any forms of it I come across". It'd be the same thing if a character was like "I don't like cats, so I'm gonna attribute my entire life to killing cats". Just because they stay true to an end goal, and put that goal above everything else, doesn't necessarily mean that they're lawful. In regards to your Lawful Evil thing, I can kinda see where you get that? Mostly I just think it's hard to categorize Evil outside of D&D, and that it's mostly just who we view in opposition to the protagonist (and it's hard to determine who is the protagonist in a media with a lot of really well developed characters and points of view). Anyway, thanks for the response!
@OwenOfElliott4 жыл бұрын
@@augurly I tend to see good/evil as how much they care about morality and lawful/chaotic as how much they care about prestablished rules/principles. The reason I think technoblade is lawful evil is because he's done multiple massacres without really looking for a less murderous alternative. Dream SMP works on video game logic of little consequences so it's a bit difficult to tell, not to mention technochat. Killing cats isn't really a principle as much as a desire, if that's the whole of the character, CN. I will say my definition gets shaky with both evil characters and that most people who act on principles do it because they think it's right.

I feel like I should bring up that in the D&D community there's long been a push to abolish alignment for the stated reason that actual characters don't fit into 9 little boxes. My largest objection to this alignment chart is Wilbur as NE and dream as CE. Wilbur blew up L'manberg for the sake of it, causing harm without reason, intentionally severing all bonds and encouraging any evil he came across (evilbur of course). That's a pretty blatant CE. Dream on the other hand has always had the single minded motivation of antagonizing Tommy. Dream makes allies when necessary, backs off when necessary but will to whatever it takes to steal Tommy's most prized possessions, his single mindedness is what keeps him from CE as much as he talks about "being on the side of chaos" pretty clearly NE

In my opinion he’s lawful good for 2 reasons 1. Every “crime” he’s ever committed has been an act of revenge or a way to avoid needing revenge in the future. 2. He’s never actually betrayed anyone first he will abandon those who’ve abandoned him rather than try to redeem a friendship but that dose not mean betrayal that means acceptance he follows the ideals he believes but at no point hides them from his ally’s.

I really like at the end where you make it clear that characters, and people especially, dont tend to fit perfectly within one axis or catagory perfectly or in the same way as others who fit into a similar or the same axis. Instead its much more like the Political Compass where it is an introductory generalization of someone to start from, where you can get more specific and down to earth to how they really are from there. Or in characters used for the beginning phases of a character creation like in D&D. People need to differentiate easy and vague generalizations from the actual reality of who someone is and why they are, in order to gain better, deeper understanding of other people, not just relying on streotypes, generalizations, personas, etc. This especially goes for streamers and youtuber who have lives and many different sides of who they are outside of what they show online.

Other noteworthy aspects of Law vs Chaos include their organization and lifestyle. Lawful characters tend to be stricter and more organized, rarely deviating from whatever path they choose for themselves whereas chaotic characters tend to adopt more haphazard and spontaneous mannerisms, almost never forming any long-term plans nor codes of conduct.

I'm about to contradict the person above me but: the alignment chart isn't a personality test, it's an incredibly dumbed down organisation of a person's values. Quite simply the lawful-chaotic axis is how loyal somebody is to principles, whether their own or somebody else's, lawful people will almost always stick to them, neutral people will disaobey them when try necessary and chaotic people will usually ignore them

As a big DnD nerd: Technoblade is 100% lawful neutral, he has his own code. This code is his moral system just as a lawful good paladin's code (or tenets) are their moral system. Just because someone embraces and wants chaos doesn't necessarily mean they are chaotic. Chaotic Neutral means that someone will do *anything* to keep themselves alive, while not purposefully trying to spread malice or malcontent. CN doesn't have a moral code aside from their own personal goal. Techno follows his own personal goal, but he's always up front about it and as far as I can see hasn't ever lied to try to get his way.
@gooddoggo28314 жыл бұрын
For me he is chaotic he will do anything to achieve there goal he barley has a moral code he just helps the people who help him with mutual gain and achieving no government is his goal and he has no laws of not hurting people or not stealing

y’all realize “chaotic” does not mean “random”??? a chaotic character is one who does not believe in the rule of law. someone who thinks society is better off without rulers, without supervision, without hierarchy. technoblade is exactly that. he literally believes in chaos as a guiding principle.
@gooddoggo28314 жыл бұрын
No what they mean is that techno follows there own personal laws while I do think he is chaotic I think that because technoblade doesn’t care about his actions he only cares if it achieves what he wants. chaotic to me feels like you don’t have any rules to achieving your goals
@Hazel-xl8in4 жыл бұрын
@@gooddoggo2831 i think not caring about methods is usually more of a neutral thing, but it’s also all very relative. a character who wants to help people by any methods necessary should probably be considered neutral good, unless the law interacts with their methods. if the law is helpful in that regard, they will be cast as the lawful character, but if the law is prohibitive and they actively fight against it then they would be cast as the chaotic character in the story. if you don’t care about how something gets done, only that it gets done then you’re not necessarily chaotic, because if you use the law to get that done then you’re at least for the time, lawful.
@gooddoggo28314 жыл бұрын
@@Hazel-xl8in not caring about methods is a chaotic thing in my opinion because what else is there only doing methods the worst way possible because that’s just lawful again what I consider lawful or chaotic is how unhinged is the person achieving there goals if they have to obey there own laws there lawful if they’re laws are more like guidelines they’re neutral if they don’t have any laws there chaotic

He genuinely believes that a lack of government will really only lead to less conflict (which is unironically true on the Dream SMP, every death and every war on the server is directly caused by the selfish actions of characters like Tommy and Dream who wanted to create a government and hold power). Arguably he's more comparable to characters like Thanos who believe that their actions, although morally dubious, will lead to prosperity in the long run.

Can one really put Technoblade as a lawful neutral character, when the only laws he follows is his own? Everyone has their own set of rules, their own set of morals. Technoblade can be seen many times choosing war over peace. As seen in the festival, he killed everyone, just to kill everyone. It's not like it accomplished much, he just felt like doing it. He plans to kill the government at the cost of his friends, and no matter how it gets accomplished. As stated by the D and D handbook "A chaotic neutral character is an individualist who follows their own heart and generally shirks rules and traditions. Although chaotic neutral characters promote the ideals of freedom, it is their own freedom that comes first; good and evil come second to their need to be free." I believe this description perfectly fits Technoblade, and will be developed when he eventually is imprisoned by Dream in the super high security compound.

@mothking57254 жыл бұрын
There's a technical chaotic element to Technoblade which comes from the chat's influence. In most ways, Techno is lawful because he follows his own code and has stated that he would never betray his own personal beliefs. However, the chat is pure chaotic neutral; the chat often wishes for chaos just for the sake of chaos with no moral alignment to be found. Because the chat (canonically referred to as the voices in Techno's head) has an influence on his decisions, this makes his character seem chaotic. Granted, Techno as a character has also said that he is actively trying to ignore the chaotic voices, so what it really comes down to is whether or not that struggle is internal or if the chat can be considered an external conflict. If it's internal than his character fluctuates between chaotic and lawful, but if it's external then he is a lawful character fighting a chaotic influence.

the problem is that people dont understand the chart or the roles at ALL. when they see evil, they see bad guy, when in reality it means being more self centred and selfish, like you mentioned. and the same for good. they dont understand and the popularized view of the chart is very warped, not really pertaining to the original meaning of the roles. wilbur simply understands the chart and roles properly, all the people saying "chaotic evil" just say it because its the most popular allignment, due to misconception and everyone's secret fantasy to be abad guy i personally agree entirely with wilbur's chart. he gets it, he understands and he applied his knowledge to his friends and associates

technoblade's laws are chaos: he creates chaos because That's Better Than What's Happening right now, so lawful neutral would be a good pick (as chaos is, as stated, neutral towards both good and evil)

A chaotic alignment doesn’t mean they don’t or follow any form of ideals, think of captain Jack Sparrow, in my opinion the apex of chaotic neutral, yet he still has the ideal of freedom. Because that’s what alignment represents, in my opinion, they represent one’s IDEALS, so saying that techno blade is lawful because of a personal code would make almost every character lawful. A lawful personal code would have to be something more like batman, that although he disobeys authority by acting as a vigilante he has the one rule, that he never breaks. Techno doesn’t have any rules like that, he has a convection that government is bad, and a determination to establish anarchy and freedom, a world without rulers or rules. Sure techno is loyal, until you are against his goals, and he is calculating, but that's more like his personal traits, not his ideals. My final argument is that when you make a character in D&D you pick a background, and those come with a couple of guide lines to help you develop your character personality, you can see where does goes in the character sheet in the video. They are: Traits, little quirks or general behavior; IDEALS, your belief, in the book most suggestions come with one alignment related to it; Bonds, your connections, friends, family, loved ones, workplace, hometown etc. and finally flaws, some personality trait that can be exploited or put you into trouble. So every alignment has it’s ideals, it’s what makes them.
@StoryTeller7962 жыл бұрын
Honestly, Tommy isn't "good", he's just "innocent", as in, he has trouble differentiating right and wrong and so therefore, doesn't usually think through nor comprehend the outcome of his actions, he just does things he thinks he is perfectly justified in doing. He is growing into being a "good" character though, all he's got to do is to grow past his co-dependence on Wilbur and only stand up for what's right, which is what he usually does but he still needs to follow a more proper leader like Tubbo or Technoblade.
@AgentS12854 жыл бұрын
I'm reminded of my lawful neutral warlock owen west who was prominent member of a dark noble family where his grandfather was a vampire. He lived on a simple code of honor, loyalty, second chances, and the family is always first. He would commit many crimes and fix many problems in the world, with the end goal being securing his families position and protecting his friends any promise he made he kept any alliance honored. But when it came time to unite the world he often threatened and blackmailed world leaders into it, he wanted to do good but most of the good he did was by accident.
