The ALL NEW GR 86 is ready for action and Toyota has brought some big changes for 2022. On the outside you will notice a totally new look with updated headlights, front fascia, wheels, duck bill spoiler and rear bumper. On the inside you will discover new interior bits including steering wheel, seats, and center console. Under the hood is now a 2.4L flat-4 that produces 228HP & is mated to a revised 6-speed automatic transmission. Is the 2022 Toyota GR 86 Automatic a BETTER sports car than a Mazda Miata?

Thanks Joe for taking the time to review the automatic GR86, I understand the excitement and enthusiasm for manual but I personally enjoyed watching a review of the automatic. It would be the one I would have to purchase because it would be my daily driver and would be in stop & go traffic three hours a day. I am also glad they brought over the eye sight safety, as those features would be critical for keeping me safe in heavy traffic daily. Keep up the great work Joe!

I just bought an automatic BRZ after watching this. I had reservations, not being able to do a manual due to injury, but your pure joy changed that for me. Drove it home yesterday and am so glad I have this car and not to mention all the goodies that come with the automatic. Honestly, on a normal drive it handles shifts just fine and I was still able to peel out using the manual control at the shifter. I found myself going 100 on the way home and almost couldn’t even tell the car is so absolutely in control of itself.

One thing I like about this car is that you won’t see these in the streets often nowadays you see all types of different years and models of mustangs, Camaros, challengers, chargers cause they’re “muscle” but as far as sports cars you don’t really see these cars in the streets and for the price tag it’s a very very tempting car to buy. Wish it had a little bit more HP but it’s still enough to easily have fun with in the backroads or on the track if you’re into that.

If I wanted a pure driving car I'd get a MX-5. If I wanted a toy that was more practical I'd get BRZ. I just don't don't think the Toyota does anything that sets it apart. The 86 has more HP, but the Miata is actually the faster car in both the 0-60 and the 1/4 mile because it's so much lighter. The MX-5 has a better clutch/shifter, a better power band(specifically in the low end), better gearing, and is a convertible. I also don't agree that this car looks more "aggressive" than the new ND Miatas. The older Miatas absolutely, but not the new ones. The ND Miatas have pretty aggressive styling, and I'd even argue the the RFs have an exotic look.

Got to be honest, I definitely see the absolute best-looking exterior feature of the Accord coupe on the 86.... those taillights. Interesting that for sheer 0-60mph. time, the Miata beats the 86 with 5.8 seconds. I mean 6.6 seconds with the automatic? My mid-size 2009 Mazda 6 sSport trim with its V6 engine can do 0-60mph. in 6.5 seconds. Something's not quite right when a significantly older family hauler can easily keep up with something like the 86 in straight-line performance. The BRZ, the 86.... why does no one want to talk about how underpowered these cars are? At least with the Miata's reputation, you don't expect a ton of horsepower. But even that one gives sub 6 second straight-line performance.

Toyota GR86 Or Subaru BRZ Manual Or Automatic They Are Fun Sports Cars To Drive

I’m all for the Nissan Z now, but this is my runner-up. Cars that are all about the experience of driving. Lightweight, connected to the road, and most importantly that it is affordable for what it is. The looks are great on this and the Z. If only the US had a competitor to these. Mustangs and Camaros are just too heavy and cost too much to get them to the same level in terms of handling and feels way bigger and cave-like in the drivers seat like you’re in a cheap coffin. Zero visibility out of the back 150 degrees of view. My 70’ Mach 1 feels much more open inside with better visibility than the new Mustang.

Nissan will definitely be more expensive, the premium may top out past $50,000 with the LSD option. The Nissan Z sport will be an open diff option with different rims. But If the Nissan Z premium is around $43,000 I am all there too.

I like this car Joe, but I am not sure I would compare it to the Miata. Besides being rear wheel drive they have some significant differences. The 86 is around 2800 lbs., 168 inches long, and has a flat 4 engine. (I have had many Subaru cars, this engine design is known for head gasket failure. It's not a gasket problem - it's a design problem). The Miata is around 2400 lbs., 154 inches long, and an in line 4 engine. Known for it's reliability. The 86 is designed as a 4 seat coupe, the Miata a 2 seat convertible. I would avoid the 86 because of the engine. For those who say Porsche has been using the flat 6 for years - yes they have, but much better design than Subaru at a much higher price point. Also old Porsche's did have oil leakage at the head gasket.

The oil issue will happen to alot of these cars later in life. Dont think the Miatas will have many at all with the Inline 4. The engine is one of the reasons im selling my Gt86 for the ND2 i want the reliability over the course of 10 plus years

Miata RF > GR86 > GT86 > Miata Soft Top is my opinion. The RF looks so good- straight up gorgeous, but if it did not have that going for it, i would go GR86 any day. Miata soft top i would not even consider, it does not look as appealing to me at all.

I’m getting a manual but the tough decision for me is choosing between the base and the premium. The premium seats and wheels look nicer but I’m concerned about the seats being too hot down here in the south. Don’t know if I’ll stick with either trims wheels or stereo long term. You think for the premium they’d have gone a little wider on the wheels or at least thrown in the optional subwoofer which you don’t get standard with premium I mean if the base still had the old 2.0 and the premium had the new 2.4 it would be a no brainer but is the premium worth the up charge if I’m going to replace all the “upgrades” anyways. I don’t know
