Well that takes me back to when my daughter was 5 and made her first harvest. She sure was proud ( not as much as I was) when she carried that groundhog into the taxidermy shop and asked if they could tan the hide… it hangs on the living room wall. They sure made her feel special!!!

Thanks for bringing the 788 back out. It is a classic rifle in a classic cartridge. My buddy has a .222 Remington chambered in an older Sako model. Absolutely high-quality rifle construction. It shoots as good as it looks. All the best.

The 222 Rem is still one of my favorite cartridges and rifles. I've used a 222 for 45 years now in a Remington 700BDL and a custom BR rifle, and the BDL has taken everything from squirrels with reduced loads to hogs and deer with 63gr Sierra SMP's. Three decades ago, that 63gr load was used to take my son's first deer. For many years, it was my go to crow and prairie dog cartridge, and it has taken many thousands with various loads and bullets. Super accurate with consistent ragged hole groups, efficient and easy to find great loads. The BR rifle has been nothing but spectacular, and through the years, it has won a few matches and taken its share of varmints. Today, most people shoot the 223, and it is often hard to find a good rifle in 222 anymore. Sad, for it is still a great performer for what it was created for, and it still holds a few BR records set decades ago.

I’ve owned a triple deuce my whole life. Got it in a Parker Hale and my son has it in a a Remington 700 BDL. Sniper calibre man. Filled our freezer many times. White tailed deer and black bear up here in Canada. Wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I have a Love for the .222 Rem. It all started in 1980 I bought my first one a New Savage 24V 222/20 and stated Reloading for both with a lee loader and a Loadall the hardware store where I bought the reloaders , sat me down with and showed how to reload with both . I still use IMR 4198 powder and a Sierra 50 grain varmiter bullet in mutiple 222 Remingtons I bought a new Savage 340D clip feed bolt 222 Rem. Used Rem. 600, Rem 7 bolts actions , T/C contender barrel 10" and 24" MGM custom barrel and a Ithaca Tikka Turkey gun in 12 ga./ 222 Rem. over/under. Did you ever try IMR 4198 powder ? I see use H4198 , IMR powders are more available. I do use H4895 in quite a few rifles , I reload for .but never bought any H4198 ! Keep the Great Videos Coming ! I watched all 3 of your videos on the Rem. 788 .222 Rem. ! Stay Safe Healthy ! God Bless !

Study back in the 50’s or 60’s on the hunting habits of the Inuit people showed that the preferred cartridge at the time was the .222 Remington. They would shoot polar bear and large walrus, and just follow them from a safe distance until they bled out. They preferred the .222 for the same reason the US military switched to the 5.56 - weight.

40gr to 60gr bullets, 2900 fps to 3500 fps. I'd say it's the sweet spot. Nice long case neck, nice handy size, centerfire. .223 Remington is overrated, I vote the "triple deuce." .222 Rem magnum probably got heavily overshadowed by .22-250 Rem and .220 Swift, is my guess. Even Winchester's attempt at the .225 Winchester quickly peetered out.

I also have a 788, per serial number made in Jan '77. Yes, it will hit a dime at 100 yards. Once I got a similar 5 shot group (dime size) at 200. That load was pretty hot though and over pressure. I don't know if I could that the same again with a more comfortable load or not? The .222 rocks though, there's no doubt about that!

Yet another entertaining and informative video, Sir! I love the .222. I've kept a Krico (mini Mauser action, from the '50s) and a full stock Sako 461. Great little stalking rifles. Also have a SteyrSL in .222Mag. More interesting than my .223s! FYI, I consider whistle pigs, especially the little ones, to be entirely edible. The muscle appears somewhat striated, but isn't grainy in texture. The heavy fat is not marbled and trims off easily. Brunswick Stew! Great channel!

Great video Sir ! An uncle of mine that lived in the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia Canada. ( That is right up near Alaska).Had this exact model of .222. His was a little different though. It was given to him in the 1960's by a fellow that bent the first few inches of barrel, buy using it as a pry bar on a stuck vehicle. Old Uncle Jim cut the bent part off ,recrowned the muzzle and used that rifle on his trapline. That old .222 took many a critter on his trapline ,as well as many dozens of blacktail deer. It was in continual use until his passing 19 years ago. Your video today brought back memories, Thank You..

Some of this video makes no sense, I have a Remington 788 in .243 Winchester I bought in 1981, and it is a tack driver with 80 or 100 grain bullets, I free floated the stock and redid the stock, sanding it, staining it and putting 7 coats of finish on it. Who or why would a grown white Christian man be afraid of a ground hog or a wood chuck digging thru a concrete basement foundation? My best boyhood friend Ray, the top ranking Eagle boyscout in the St. Louis neighborhood Baden, Missouri we grew up in, has a family farm outside Redbud, IL., and there are a couple of raised ponds they raise catfish in. 40 something years ago there were woodchucks digging holes thru the raised catfish ponds and Ray would say this is a woodchuck, this is a woodchuck with a .22 hornet hollow point in the head. They didn't pitch the pest's carcass, they skinned and cleaned and cooked them. In the near future people could be thanking Jesus Christ for a pot of rat meat rice pilaf. With this clot shot scamdemic the prices on Remington 788 and 660 rifles and many other guns have gone insane. An older friend of my dad had a Sako bolt action rifle in .222 Remington, and John would say at 200 yards what eye do you want me to put the the bullet into iiving target in.

The 222 Remington was a premier bench rest cartridge back in the day replacing the 219 Donaldson Wasp. Things progress with time. The 222 was modified by shortening the neck and lengthening the case to create the 223Rem for the AR15. Theoretically the 222 is inherently more accurate due to the longer neck but in the real world it is minute. I've had two factory 223s that would shoot 3/16" groups so hence the 222 though a great cartridge fell by the wayside. These days if it's not offered in an AR platform nobody cares. I'd buy one in a heartbeat having stupidly sold one too many years ago.
