I'm 5"11, 195 pounds and love a 36mm Datejust. Very classy and comfortable. For a sporty watch I prefer a little bigger, but for dressy watch I like the elegance of a small watch.

I’m 6’ but only have a 6.2” wrist. All my watches are under 40mm and the best fit for me is my 38mm Aqua Terra. When choosing an Explorer 1, I went for the 36mm option and it looks great on my wrist. I could’ve worn the 40mm but going a bit smaller was right for me. By the way, it’s worth mentioning that the lug-lug length is important, sometimes more so than case width.

36 mm is the best. Most watches look to big and people think everyone is looking. So a new Roli at 40 or 41mm is extra bling but too big in my opinion. At 36 mm people who know the will see and be just as pleased. Understatement is cool. I go for vintage all the time 1940s to 1960s, so I wear 33 to 37 mm. Omega, Universal, Certina or Dugena and you can get a nice piece and keep 2/3 of the money that a Datejust Roli will set you back

I've got a 34.5mm vintage Omega, a 42mm Tissot and a bunch of sizes in-between. Like I tell people looking to get in shape, don't focus on the numbers, focus on the look. If you see a watch you like, try it on.

36mm is a classic size, we were use to rock watches under 38mm pre-1995. Panerai, Franck Mueller, Hublot, AP and many cheap fashion brands started the big watch trend plus 42mm in the late 90's. Eventually many luxury watch brands increased their sizes from 34mm - 36mm to 39mm - 40mm plus range. The size that matters is in the lug to lug length of a watch, not so much the width. Also the dial, design, finish, material and the size of the individual makes a watch look smaller or larger than it is. I'm 5'5 (short guy) average thin build, 7' wrist. I can wear a Big Pilot on my wrist, but from a distance the thing looks huge and stands out. A big guy 6'2 275 lbs. with a 6 1/2 inch wrist can wear the same watch. It may look normal on him, but it will wear too large in regards to fit on wrist. Too much lug overhang. A big guy like Tony Soprano can wear a 36mm Day Date and it will look normal. Again it's the design of a watch. In Tony Sopranos case it's a gold watch with a bracelet. Give him a 36mm IWC Mark 12 on a leather strap, it may look small on him. My advise, don't listen to KZbinrs who always complain about a watch being too small or too large. It may be for them, but not for everyone. Lug to lug, determines the size of a watch. Case design, material finish, dial layout, and dial color will determine how much or how little a watch pops on wrist. Size is objective and there is no right answer. It all comes down to how you feel and how it wears on you.

I’m 6’1 and 225lbs and I think anything larger than 38mm is pushing it for me. I have a few 39mm-40mm watches I still wear, but after just following along with the big case trend of the past couple of decades I realized a couple years back that 34mm-37mm is kind of the sweet spot for me.

If you have less than a 7 inch wrist stick to a 36 mm. 41mm is perfect for 7inch+ wrist size. Lug to lug size matters too.

I’ve gone back and forth on this issue 100 times. At 6’ 250 lbs muscular with a 7.5” wrist a 36mm pending which watch and bracelet, I feel could be too small. I don’t feel that way about the Rolex Day Date as I have one and pull it off. But a 36mm on a leather strap can feel smallish. When I was younger I wore a 34mm Movado on a leather strap but I didn’t know anything about watches at 19 years old. I always thought it was a bit small but that was 25 years ago so it was how it was.

My mom owns presidential day date that she got from a friend that owed her money, she doesn’t wear it, however the problem is the watch is on the smaller side, it’s smaller then 36mm. I’m not sure as a male it would suite me wearing, would feel kinda embarrassed if it were to small, it although it’s a nice time piece.. anybody has dealt with this type of struggle prior? All this 36mm coping. 41 all the way. You got all these points on the aesthetics however people who are about their money view rolex as an investment that they can flex. Investments you want them to perform well. A 41 will hold value and sell way better than the 36 if you decide to liquidate in the future. Anything 36mm/diamonds/two-tone = watches for women, niche market, harder sell than plain jane rolex 41mm steel.

I think large watches, anything over 36mm, are ugly and cartoonish. Some people having legitimate different tastes, I’m willing to push out to 40 mm for agree to disagree sake. I think it is mass hysteria that people think otherwise. Think about it. Large rings are clunky and garish. Large bracelets? Thin ones, ok in isolated cases, but remember thick ones are called manacles. Why would big watches be different? Unless your arms are 10 feet long and you need to read the time from a great distance, it makes no sense. Which is the reason why fundamentally it looks stupid. You don’t need a watch face that large. Since most of the time in the history or watches they have been smaller, even when making watches larger would be easier to produce, i predict most larger watches will decrease in value once people get back to the median and insanity breaks out somewhere else.
