While the prices on these have gone up over the past 5 years, you have a lot more color and used options which makes up for it! Checking out the Demo Shop is a good way to get a deal: 🔴tidd.ly/3RZYq1c Or you might see if Sweetwater has a "Demo": 🟢imp.i114863.net/trogly My Website: 🐕www.troglysguitarshow.com

I've been contemplating buying my first new 60s Les Paul Standard, and on Black Friday I happened upon one with a GORGEOUS top in Ocean Blue at my local shop, and I had to have it. Not only does it play and sound great, but they were having a 10% off sale and also gave me a 10% Veterans discount! I also have a Silverburst Les Paul Studio that I bought new in 2009. It has an ebony board and the 490/498s and sounds completely different...but the necks are exactly alike! I have to say, with all the Gibson bashing lately, I have zero complaints. I just wish I didn't have to wait until I was retired to own one.

My grandmother passed away and my mother wants to buy us kids something around 3k to remember her for, something that lasts pref. whole lifetime. I was thinking this but the thing is I've only played for like a year, seems kinda too good for a noob but then again, if and when I keep this hobby up I might be able to justify it to myself.

I have a 2022 60s Unburst Standard. I love it. I tried the 50s standard but found the neck too thick. I changed out the top hats for gold speed dials. I grew up in the 70s and the Norlin era guitars I drooled over as a young teen had speed dials. The top hats are in a bag in my case. I am in my mid fifties and my family bought me my guitar, I feel really privileged. I live in Australia and a les Paul Standard is over $4500 Aussie dollars.

I love my 2023 LP 60’s standard in Ice Tea burst. QC is solid, still came with the “baby picture” and the case was Canadian made 🇨🇦. The top has a nice flame and imho it is a good looking guitar. More importantly it feels comfortable with the 60’s slim taper neck ( which I prefer) and I really like the sound and tones I get from the 60’s Burtsbuckers. It was a guitar I had been wanting for a while and it hasn’t disappointed. I picked it up last April at my local Long & McQuade during Gibson Month. It was $500 off at a little over $3k, with the Gibson price jump they are now just under $4k. It seems that any guitar price in USD is $1,000 more in Canada. Needless to say I was happy to get mine when I did. I really like the look of the classic white or the sparkling burgundy in the custom colours but I’ll pass. Kinda have my eye on one of the custom colour SG Standard 61’s in classic white. Great review as always Trogly. Thanks

If you are looking to buy a 60s Standard, a used Custom Shop R0 can be found for 3k-3.5k. And if you don't mind having a plain top, look for a "G0", they can go for cheaper sometimes

I bought a 2023 black LP Custom and had to send it back!! It was buzzy and came with a case that had cheap non positive latching latches that I could lift the lid and they would just come unlatched. Definitely not worth the 5K price tag! My Standards played perfect strait out of the boxes and had better cases. Definitely play a custom before shelling out the cash for one!
@rocktorrocks

@@racrx7 What a bummer! Sorry to hear the custom was a let down. Well said. I’ve considered ordering a custom shop from reverb or somewhere online but I might think twice unless I can try one out first or easily return the guitar. Phillip McKnight has a youtube video reviewing a Custom Shop R0 and he found a bunch of flaws/issues. At that price point should be able to order sight unseen but guess that’s not the case. Glad your standards have served you well though. Makes me know I’m not crazy for wanting to stick to my standard 60s. I’ve played a few custom shops and have hard time justifying the price difference.

I purchased the '60 "model" a couple years ago. Make sure you thoroughly check the QC on the guitar prior to purchasing (if possible) mine required a truss rod adjustment, sanded the nut slightly and I put locking Grover's on the headstock. The G loves to dive and I really have a hard time, in general, keeping it in tune. However, user error and inexperience with a Les Paul plays a major factor I'm sure! Always wanted one and this was a good opportunity to own a LP. I am thinking about selling it and checking out a custom. Rock on everyone! 🤘

I got one in ICED TEA SUNBURST. It looked the most like the photos of REAL Les Pauls from that era, that had not obviously been sitting in the sun for a long time. Still had some of the red left in the burst area. Financed over what, 30 months, no interest... I'm still thrilled. I preferred the 60s version for slightly hotter pickups, better tuners and slimmer neck. $2499.

I recently got a 60's Standard mid 2023 in Honey Lemon Burst at Guitar Center. Really great flame and something I don't see mentioned a lot is that the binding, and all the plastics are the cream type "aged" color. Really goes well with the finish. Also, they have the lighter back. A lot of people mistake my guitar for a R9 or R0 and honestly, it's the best Les Paul I've ever played and I've played several Customs and even spent time with a Collectors Choice. Granted this is the ONLY 60's Standard I've played and maybe I just got a really good one but it's a big win in my book and I will always recommend them and always recommend playing the guitar before you buy it if you can.

Please, continue showing close up video of the binding in the cutaway section. This is an important area that Gibson hasn’t necessarily been overly consistent in how they deal with it (i.e., thick binding, maple top showing, maple top stained to match mahogany body, etc.). It becomes even more of a focus with all these “new” color choices Gibson is offering.👍🏼

If I didn’t have to worry about money, I’d personally own a custom model or a model with the axcess heal cut. Though even then it’s hard to pick what Les Paul suits me. In terms of standards, classics or moderns and even traditional models. I thought for a while the 60s standard or classic would be my choice because of the slim tapper neck, but 50s rounded necks have grown on me recently. It’s especially strange given how I kind of detest fender C necks, but I suppose Gibson has a specific touch to their C’s that feels more natural around my palm. Of course that’s not even touching on specs, color options and weight for each one.

I think the Moderns give you the most bang for your buck. More tone choices, a nice curved heel. Grover tuners, Burst Bucker and Burstbucker +, and very nice colors (I just purchased a Seafoam Green one). I also own a new Les Paul Supreme which is a Modern with some nice cosmetic appointments. I also have a 2019 Standard which is like a Modern with the Push/Pull pots and a Les Paul Slash. In all 4. To top it off, I also have an ES-345 in 60's Cherry and an older CS-336 in Ebony. My next guitar though will be a PRS ( I already have 4 PRSs and I have been overlooking them recently in favor of Gibson.

I bought this exact 60s dark purple burst in December 2023. Mine arrived with a beautiful top and a misaligned nut. I liked the look and everything about it so I decided to spend just a little more money and get a bone nut installed. I was surprised a $3000 USA Gibson would make it out to a customer with such a glaring error, but I made the choice to keep it and do the nut upgrade.

From a Gibson employee: "I worked at the Memphis plant for a while. You will never know when you will have to work on Saturday. Usually, this is more often than not. They push numbers instead of quality, hoping the end result will meet the bottom line numbers. The masses will come back time and again to buy these guitars because of the name on the headstock. I have deep inside 1st hand knowledge proving that these guitars are anything but quality. Glue joints that have no glue, super glue on top of wood glue when the first glue joint didn't hold, truss rods that aren't even close to centered down the neck, should I go on?? I personally saved this division a pocket full of money with major obstacles I showed them how to overcome, (which they happily implemented) and I was never once rewarded, but on the contrary I was harassed by management and given an abundance of lip service, and unfortunately I cannot go into further detail at the moment. If you need a job because you are hurting for money, then look to this place as a temp solution. Turn over is off the charts!!" So yeah - screw Gibson/Epiphone. I have two les paul style guitars - both Fernandes, and both less expensive and infinitely better built than Gibson.

Prices are way out of my range, even a Tribute is too much. I picked up a PRS SE Tremonti because I wanted the “Les Paul” but with a tremolo and slightly hotter pickups. To get that from Gibson it would probably have to be an Access Custom Floyd rose for a lot more than I paid. Oddly enough, the bridge pickup is 4-conductor, but the neck is only 2… and that’s the same on the Core model. Very odd.

I can't handle the mother of toilet seat inlays for the price. The inlays are also more rounded because they are cnc bit cut. It they had sharp edges and looked more like the darker originals I would be happier. The could use laser for thismimo. Also the bridge screws go into a metal threaded portion instead of the body which also does not look original. So that all said they sound and play great but the mods to modern cheaper manufacturing change the looks alot from the 50s and 60s reissues we used to get not that long ago for the same price. I5 bothers me that whay used to be "standard" gets pushed forward a few thousand dollars per year. I don't see how it's that expensive to make.

Standards are perfectly fine guitars but, the Classic was a step above and for way less money. The Modern is also superior for the same money. I just don't see the draw to the Standard in recent years? I have 15 Les Pauls and none of them Standards because in my opinion the Standard is just too "Standard" for the price of 3K. I would never buy a current Custom either for the price. Back when I bought my first Les Paul, a Custom was about $100 more than a Standard. Now, double...

I have had many Pauls, still have 3, but recently I bought a Harley Benton Lemon Drop Les Paul. 129 euros only! It literally rips the shit out my Gibsons! Who knew? Coil taps, better neck shape and HALF the weight! What more?

Beautiful guitar, but I’m just not a fan of those burst buckers. They’re just way too bright for me. It’s definitely a personal preference, so please don’t take offense if you’re a fan of those. I prefer the custom buckers.
