Another one to add to it's collectible status is that the 997.2 were the last models to be made by Porsche as a stand-alone company before it was absorbed in the VW Group. Subsequent models were heavily influenced by the corporate parent. They got more modern, yes vastly improved interiors but also tamer and blander. Same as what happened to Lamborghini.

Eh, not really. I own a 997 and it still uses all VW/Audi electronics. The biggest thing that makes the 911 unique is a bespoke chassis, suspension, and engine. Every mechanical bit on the car that affects how it drives, is made specifically for a Porsche. Specifically for a 911 or a Cayman/Boxster/718. Really the only difference between the 911 and the mid engine variants is that the rear seats are traded for the engine and they put a little trunk in the back. The modernization of the interior is about the same between the 993->997->991. The 996 was... different. Why a 911 is so expensive is definitely partially heritage, but it's also because they make one body, one engine, one suspension, for one specific car. They don't make a modular platform and make everything from a "roadster" to an SUV with it like many modern carmakers do. They don't make one V6 engine and put it in every car they make. They make a flat six motor and they put it in one exceptionally rigid chassis. THere are no compromises for a sports car because the platform also has to be able to support an SUV. That's also why Porsche purists don' care that Porsche makes SUVs and whatever else people want to drive. The Cayenne is an exceptionally sporty SUV but it also shares a lot of mechanical components with a VW/Audi/Lamborghini Atlas/Q7/Urus. The Taycan and Audi eTron GT are basically the same car. The day Porsche lets VW use its sports car chassis for another VAG product is when Porsche is no longer independent.

Totally agree.. the wide body still looks transformative and distinctive for this generation... the base size of the following gens.. 991 and on were too wide to start with and thus the 4S increased width no longer had that special impact to the rear

I always wanted to own a 911 but I don’t like sports cars with back seats, a midship engine with a lower centre of gravity is too compelling for me to resist. In 2006 Porsche killed my 911 dream with the introduction of the Cayman and sealed my fate with the 987.2. However the 993 and 997.2 are the ones I would own if Porsche never produced the Cayman as these models are the right size for our very tiny London roads with bigger cycle lanes. The 997.2 is a better value proposition with reliable engine but both cars are Fantastic with classic Porsche proportions. Nice content Raj

I was able to pick up a 2009 997.2 Carrera 4 a few years back, and am very pleased that I got it. Would have loved to have bought a 993 at the time, but they were already going astronomic on prices. Love the analog steering and the look (and everything else about it).

I get your comment about engine note. I've had both and a 997.2 (especially without PSE in my experience) does have an air cooled note to it - more than 1 porsche enthusiast friend has commented the same

Another very informative video Raj. As owner of both 993 and 997.2 I had never considered the similarities before. However I agree both are milestones at important changes in 911 history and I agree both are special in their own ways which make them stand out. Especially in manual rear drive form.

Nice video! I have the the s version with the same black wheels. I love it. Where do you get the covers for your cars? Are they originally from Porsche? Best regards from Switzerland 🇨🇭
@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Peter, most of them are from Porsche, either the white soft indoor version or grey shiny outdoor version. They cost the same in the UK, and there is 10% discount on them with Porsche Club membership too, hopefully the same applies in Switzerland. Thanks, Raj

Great video, Raj. I bought my 2012 C4 Cabriolet 997.2 PDK wide body Porsche last March, it was a low mileage car. Sounds like I bought it at the right time. What do you think the market value will do on a cabriolet here in the states?

I agree with most of the points made in this video, however, I would have thought a 997 Carrera GTS would have been a more direct comparison to the 993 Carrera S. Both are rear wheel drive, wide bodied cars and both were run out models. The rear-wheel-drive cars are also obviously lighter and feel nimbler than the four-wheel drive variants. As the 997 Carrera GTS is the only rear wheel drive wide bodied car made (with the obvious exception of the GT models), I think buying a good low milage rear wheel drive 997 Carrera GTS would be a very shrewd move.
@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE2 жыл бұрын
That’s a great point Graeme, and I do agree. I don’t get GTS very often so used the C4S, but the GTS is the ultimate widebody rear wheel drive for sure. Many thanks, Raj

amazing car but it doesn't sound as good as the 997.1 c4s ..... I think the 997.1 is a way more raw/ mechanical experience where the .2 is very composed and predictable (in a good way)
