IS THE APPLE IBOOK G4 STILL USABLE OR OBSOLETE IN 2024?

Welcome to the world of Apple G4 laptop computers. Over a decade ago, I picked-up off of Ebay a 12-inch G4 PowerBook. Daily, I would carry it to the office and use it to watch both DVD movies and KZbin videos during my lunch break. For productivity, I had iLife '09, iWorks '09, Appleworks, and Microsoft Office installed. In addition, on the PowerBook line the Apple logo on the top "lights-up" whenever, the unit is powered on (smile...smile).

I think any Mac from late 90's on up can still be used for something. We are in a cool era right now, where someone could find a use for a 25 year old machine.

On a pc I installed Linux and modified xfce to look like macOsX Leopard. A 19 year old UI is still more beautiful than the modern ones.

I bought my iBook G3 in 2003, and used it for awhile. It had a display issue that had a 3 year extended warranty on it. It wound up failing 5 times, and Apple wound up replacing it with a brand new iBook G4 1.33 Ghz. I got that one right before the first MacBooks came out. It was a great computer at the time, but these days it's pretty much a boat anchor. I still have mine, but every time I get it out to look at it, it's just an exercise in frustration. As much as I liked the PowerPC era, it's best left in the past. The one you have there is in great shape. Keep it nice - they'll be collectors items someday! (maybe they are now?)

It’s definitely best if it’s left in the past unfortunately but yes, higher end power pcs are becoming collectors special and I think a lot of these especially in good condition are! And thank you!

Installing 10.5.9 is a good starting point. There isnt TLS1.3 so your going to have to compile that in order to get on most websites. Its VERY possible to achieve what your after, you just have to go old school and compile everything. Retro-Arch, NextCloud, and more can be achieved if your creative and patient enough. A device is only as old as the software running on it... Beautiful machine btw...

I had a 12” iBook G4 - what a great little machine that was. 10.4 was such a nice OS also, very responsive. 10.5 ran a bit sluggish on it. Your videos are great. Still can’t believe you haven’t got 50k subs!

I got one last year for $80 and i found it to be a good distraction free word processor. Not to mention all the other early 2000’s software you can run on it.

You could have created 2 partitions within Tiger- if you would have selected 2 partitions in disk utility, you would have been able to press the greyed out button, then you wouldn’t have had to do a fresh install- it wont let you create 1 partition from within the OS as it wont format an active drive, but you can create 2 partitions.. Also on the registration screen, you can just press command and Q and it would have closed the registration information page- just a couple of tips for next time or whatever 👍

U can change the hard rive with Ssd card boost the max ram , an excellent computer I still use from time to time

Yeah, anything powerpc isn't hugely useful because web doesn't quite work. If you can dual-boot to MacOS9, it basic doubles the games you can play.

the main problem is that one can no longer update any web browser the machine is capable of most websites it is just not allowed by no browser support!

You can install Linux on it to use actual Software. Adelie Linux still has a 32bit ppc edition.
