The hatred of greaves and arm protection is easily explainable from a cinematic standpoint, they're the things that slow the actors down the most. The fight scenes look more impressive without them, which is why you tend to see them on actors who are not required to move around much in that scene. That's kinda why Björnsson is the only one who wears full armor in a fight scene. Not only is he meant to be a little slow, it... well, it's Björnsson. He could wear a bathtub and still be dancing. Helmets also famously get actors hurt, because it restricts their vision. Still, it is annoyingly distracting sometimes, I agree.

The Mountains greathelm probably wasnt too big either. Crusaders wore greathelms as big as that or bigger and they weren't (being depicted) as 8 foot tall and 700 pounds like the mountain is in GoT. With a greathelm like that you would likely bell wearing chainmail that covers your head and face, a small iron helm and THEN the greathelm. So they were obviously massive. Not all of them were that big because not all were designed to be worn over another smaller helm but a lot were and that's why I am perfectly fine with the Mountains helm right there.
@JruJewJitsu7 жыл бұрын
Not trying to be sly but the Mountains greathelm is too big? No greathelm would be that big? Have you seen a crusaders greathelm? They were massive because they would have to fit their chainmail AND another helm under the greathelm. I believe his greathelm is perfectly fine considering that.

I liked that he was swinging the sword like a tree, even with very little technique there are very few people in that universe that would parry such a hit and not be effected by his brute strength.
@CrazyBoyAndyTV8 жыл бұрын
In a real fight then you would use his momentum to step into his open reach and easily get the cut off. A wild, readable swing is no good against any trained opponent. You don't have to get a full block with it, you just let his sword knock your sword into a better position for an instant counter. If GoT was real then Mountain would be little more than a buffed up guard. Being a knight means you should train to be skillful with the blade. Either that or he should use an axe/hammer. Swing a sword as hard as you like against plate metal and sod all happens.

Most of the one-on-one fights we see don't occur where shields would be practical to carry. Shields are heavy, unwieldy, and uncomfortable to carry around when a fight is not expected, which is when the vast majority of GoT characters fight each other. Most times we see large or prepared battles, characters DO use shields, and others use two handed weapons that wouldn't allow for a shield (see the Hound, though he actually is given a shield during his fight with Beric)

@maciejjagowski31698 жыл бұрын
But you realise that what one should always avoid while commenting fantasy genre is comparing it to our real life? The main goal to achieve by every good fantasy writer is to create a fully exomimetic world, which means more or less the world that has its own rules, reasonable enough that one could believe such a world could really exist. This refers to armor as well.
@tSp2898 жыл бұрын
Good fantasy has a few select areas where you need to suspend disbelief: the existence of magic, non-human sentient species, dragons etc. However you can't just throw the rule book out of the window, because then it becomes incoherent fantasy. "How did that guy travel 800 miles in one day?" "Don't question it! It's fantasy!" "No but really though, there is no mode of transport in the setting that moves that fast." "Shh! It's fantasy!" "You're an idiot." Of course, in this case we are talking about the rare exception of something fairly practical that doesn't correlate to our own history. I think that is fine. Usually 'fantasy' elements are stupid because they do not understand how those things work in real life, and they don't care. In those circumstances, you SHOULD compare them to real life in order to point out how the fantasy element is completely impractical. And you know, maybe one day someone will listen. Probably not though.

For the most part, good video. Few problems though. 1) Most of your criticisms are based on whether or not someone is being stupid and wearing or not wearing armour in the correct places. Which doesn't really comment on the realism of the armour itself. 2) Look up difference between pauldron and spaulder. Robb wears Spaulders, covering the shoulders and armpits. Jaime only wears pauldrons, which only cover the shoulder, not the armpits. Historically, people (rich or poor) chose to wear pauldrons even when spaulders were available. Why? I don't know, maybe for increased mobility of the arms while fighting, maybe not. But... 3) it's unfair to call a choice of armour that was made by people in real life, an inaccuracy. 4) Continuing with the mobility argument, unless you're wearing full plate, you want to have a degree of mobility while fighting, whether in it's the arms or legs, doesn't matter. So the choice of pauldrons over spaulders or lack of leg armour can be validated. Not to mention, more armour, faster tiring, happened to the French at Agincourt. 5) Criticism of Gregor Clegane's helmet is wildly inaccurate. The Starks (and many people historically) wear/wore unvisored bascinets, leaving the whole face exposed. Coverage of the face is a question of vision and when it's hot (as I'm guessing it is on King's Landing) or you're exhausted, the more covered up your face is, the less air you can get. Happened to the French at Agincourt, dropped their visors to protect themselves from the English longbowmen, and after advancing through a muddy field they were exhausted. " lack of oxygen in plate armour with the visor down... meant the French men-at-arms could 'scarcely lift their weapons'" - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Agincourt
@sonny2dap8 жыл бұрын
Great comment, my advice to anyone if they want to get an idea as to what it's like to fight in armour is go take up Tae Kwon Doe or similar and do some sparring, full protection gear is a soft shin guard, a soft forearm guard, a chest piece and headgear, it's not particularly heavy, but it is extremely hot and after 3 two minute rounds of fighting I promise you will be feeling every ounce of extra weight on you, scale that feeling up for various mail/gambeson/plate and the weight of a weapon and it becomes very easy to see why people would have chosen to forgo armour in certain instances.
@DoubleBob8 жыл бұрын
+sonny2dap Maybe you'd forgo that extra weight after some sparring, but I believe you would change your mind, if you had a life worth of training behind you and people ready to take your life in front of you.
@maxtripp29758 жыл бұрын
FernestHall Oberyn chose to wear light armour for increased flexibility and movement and until he tried to get The Mountain to confess, it worked. He could move around The Mountain who couldn't hit him in his clunky armour. And ten live's worth of training isn't gonna change the effect of dozens of pounds of weight. Need I again retell the story of Agincourt? Tire your heavily armoured enemy out and a life's worth of a knight's training doesn't make a difference.
@DoubleBob8 жыл бұрын
Max Tripp You keep repeating Agincourt as an example why heavy armor is bad, because it might fatigue the troops, if they march through a muddy field. What you don't emphasize enough is "it was a SHITTON of mud!", "recently ploughed field", "recent heavy rain", "sank up to their knees" and "7000 longbowmen". Every soldier, no matter the armor, would be fatigued, if he was marching knees deep across a field while being shot at all the time. Stupid tactics defeated them, not the armor.
@sonny2dap8 жыл бұрын
FernestHall Maybe, maybe not but I would point to modern day soldiers, wearing ceramic armour and even soft armour for lower power calibres, what do these soldiers always want? less weight, in the case of elite units special cuts of plate carrier are made which basically consist of a trauma plate front and rear over heart/lungs and little else, the soft armour around the upper body is cutaway and the lower section is raised this is to increase mobility and lessen the weight burden for troops being deployed for prolonged periods, armour is and always will be a trade off of mobility and endurance vs protection, hence my taking exception of people criticizing certain armour as poor, some of it may not offer full coverage or offer vulnerabilities but it may also offer greater mobility, my point is that the critique was clearly done as if full plate is the ideal in all cases.
@fenrirunshackled43198 жыл бұрын
The Lanister armour and kingsguard armour is ceremonial in nature. If you had read the books (perhaps you have) you would know that the kingsguard is chosen for political reasons and does not form the brunt of the king's protection. Ceremonial armour can definitely be seen in history, such as armour sets found constructed purely out of gold. It would be much like saying that the Swiss guard doesn't have a an airforce and is therefore a poor protective body, rather the security of the Vatican is in the fact that no large groups wish to attack it and the attackers will always be vastly outnumbered.

I have a question inspired by a fanfic I read once. What would happen if someone used a shield made of taffy in a one on one duel? In the story, the sword gets stuck in the shield at the first strike.
@JruJewJitsu7 жыл бұрын
Wesley Molt It depends on the sword. Some swords were quite blunt on purpose as to not lose what edge they had during battle. A very sharp swords edge is very brittle and will dull in battle whilst clanging among the multiple metals one would encounter. Swords that are just fuckn sharp m8, would lay that taffy shield in half by all likelihood. When you really sharpen something, it is almost unbelievable how much damage it can do to soft targets.

@SnapJelly8 жыл бұрын
It really isn't that heavy, usually around 30kg (with chainmail) and most of the weight would be supported on your hips so it won't hurt your back.

@cjdabes8 жыл бұрын
Being able to move around freely is great and all, but if you have absolutely nothing protecting you then it doesn't help against a well trained swordsman who has more room for mistakes. Regarding the "massive sword" thing; swords are not heavy at all. I don't even know of a sword that is 5 pounds let alone more. Longswords, such as the Mountain's (although his is sized up for visual purpose to match his stature), only got to be around 4.5 pounds. The weight isn't as important as the balance between blade and hilt. If it's balanced well (for the sword), then weight isn't an issue anyways. Regarding stamina and endurance: yes, armor does wear you down a lot quicker. However, being without armor means you have to be considerably more cautious with parries and strikes. Let us remember what actually happened in the Viper-Mountain fight. The Viper does a bunch of spinning and shit, something that historical sword masters would unequivocally warn against simply because 1) it's pointless and doesn't advance a fight and 2) turning away from your opponent is an extremely stupid thing to do. Furthermore, fighting without armor doesn't mean you don't get tired easy too. I'm a member of HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) and co-run a local chapter with weekly practices. We fight with pretty minimal armor sometimes and with more maneuverability than full steel armor, yet we still get tired after a a few minutes of intense sparring. Also, the Viper only disabled the Mountain with a schnitt (drawing cut) at the heel and when he did this, the Mountain basically stood there and did nothing (as you see with many film and TV fights). Game of Thrones fights are, in my opinion, 'better' than other films and shows, but they still fall into some tropes. If you're interested in a HEMA person's perspective on the fight of Ser Arthur Dayne (who is called the greatest swordsman Nedd Stark ever saw) at the Tower of Joy, look up "Skallagrim Arthur Dayne" here on KZbin. As he puts it, Dayne isn't a competent swordsman because he's good, he's just 'more competent' than his opponents. :)
@wurstbrot90108 жыл бұрын
***** Viper was kind of arrogant. He drinked alcohol before the fight, and he brings the mountain down. If he just finished it ... It was over. And to be fair, the mountain also died due to the injuries. He came back as Frankensteins Monster. I would call that a draw at least. The Viper didnt lost his live because he had no armor and no strentgh, he lost it because of he was blind for revenge. Imagine the Viper wearing a heavy armor when his primaly "stat" was agility. He had no chance against him. His best chance was agility vs the strengh. Only Wun Wun can take the bruth strenght of the mountain. As long as you are able to make no mistakes, you can win the fight if it goes longer and longer. The wildings and Dotrhaki are fearsome warriors and they need no armor. The best example is bronn vs Sir Vardis Edgon. Bron is only using a sword and has no helmet. Sir Vardis has a much more heavy armor and even a shield. Bronn made no mistake and Vardis is exhausted even the most hits are not leathal. yeah he was walking away, using his ability until Vardis is exhausted, then he cut him so often until he cant even stand a chance anymore. "You don't fight with honor." "Well.... He did..." Viper simply was personal involved, Bronn wasnt. In a big battle it is necessary to wear a big armor, in a one on one it depends of your skills and your weapons. Or take all of the Dorne girls. No armor at all, but they only have to hurt you once and you will go down because of the poison.
@cjdabes8 жыл бұрын
The Mountain's armor isn't as good as it seems at first glance. He has plates but they are not overlapping, rather they are liked with gaps between every plate. That is terrible if you expect to defend any thrusting, the blade would just slip between the plates. It's the reason why the Lannister's "scale armor" is overlapping.
@SnapJelly8 жыл бұрын
Indian ''mail and plate'' gets away with it though
@cjdabes8 жыл бұрын
True. The difference is that the Indian plate and mail has mail between the plates. The Mountain's is just plates with rings at each corner linking it to the adjacent plates, thus leaving gaps between each plate. :)

YOU have to take that into consideration also, just saying

@Adones098 жыл бұрын
Did you watch your own video? You yourself pointed out that they all weren't exactly the same. That Jaime's' armpit/shoulder area was not covered, less protection, vulnerable. That also means that he can move his arms more freely. I will admit that i have not worn armour or swung a blade (Old roommate collected swords, LOTR, 300, Samurai, etc.) in the TRADITIONAL sense. But I have Played football and i can tell you that different positions use different shoulder pads. QB's is going to be lighter, shaped so that he can use his arms to throw the ball. I played Outside LB/DE, i could feel my own pads squeezing my neck, choking me from the sides, as i raised my arms because they had more padding for hitting. A DB or WR pads are shorter in the front, chest area so that you can have more mobility at your core and less on the shoulders so that they may raise there arms. An OL/DL has more protection, extension so when you tried to do a crunch/situp it would dig into your abdomen. I'm 6'3", 218 lbs, i'm big, but i'm not fat. I can also tell you as a Marine that wearing armour, even a flak jacket is very constrictive at your core, as you are wrapped like a sausage, but your arms are free, as they are not protected. I'm not saying that you didn't have your points, BUT for example, you pointed out the Hound for missing pieces of his armour, but you were showing a pic of him when he was traveling with Ariya, he left Joffrey and was on the run. Even you have to admit that Knights didn't really travel in full armour all the time, one of the reasons they had squires was to help them in and out of their gear. Hell Oberyn used his speed, skill and maneuverability to take down the Mountain (someone that you pointed out for having good armour). Something that he could not of done if both he and the Mountain had the same gear on, of course his version would be scaled down for him. The only reason that he lost was because he got cocky and didn't finish the fight, started to trash talk. Truth be told i can go on and on, as a kid i was fascinated by knights, samurai and any kind of warrior. Pretty much anything to do with there weapons, armour and tactics. For example, i know that a knight would not wear the same armour that they used for jousting, that was more specialized for protection for riding and not getting knocked down form the horse, most of the time they would need a crane to sit them on top of the horse, immovable tanks. I would check out books at my local library, this was PRE-INTERNET, when you really had to do some RESEARCH to follow up on subjects that interested you... What's that smell? Smells like you are done. You can respond if you like but i'm going to ignore you now, better things to do. Notice how I did not curse, name call and i that i actually used valid examples
@TheAsj977 жыл бұрын
Adones09 Historical armour is not football gear. It's incredibly articulated, you don't lose any mobility or speed when wearing a good suit of armour, you just tire a bit quicker. So it makes no sense to have shitty armour with plenty of gaps because they won't be a lot more mobile, if at all, unless they didn't have the money to buy good armour, which is not the case with the kingsguard. And skill doesn't work like that, you can't just have bad armour and compensate for it by being really good, unless your oponent has never fought in his life. If the best swordsman in the world had shit armour and fought an average knight or soldier with very good armour, he'd die 9 times out of 10.

Serious question here, how much would a mace, flail, club or anything similar (Blunt trauma basically) affect armour? I assume gambeson, leather and mail are really really weak against blunt weapons, but again I'm likely wrong. I imagine a shield, helm and plate armour reduce the impact, but you might still get winded, jarred or even knocked out. If anyone knows, please tell me I'd love to know.

I could not find any... most types of lamellar armor are made horizontally while the Hound's is made vertically
@Helxas8 жыл бұрын
Yes. It's brigandine, or (maybe) a well-fitted corazzina. A lot of the "brigandine" that you see online are actually coats of plates or jacks of plates, which is what Robb Stark uses (and the Mountain, but improperly). A coat of plates is made up of two pieces of leather or some type of fabric, sewn together with steel plates in between them. The top layer is very important, because if it's not there a blade will simply slide to the side of a plate when making contact, and cutting through the bottom layer. The top layer stops the blade from sliding too far. The Mountain seems to want to utilize this, but he's got no fabric layers.

Hey SnapJelly, just wanted to point something out - t 3:30 you mention the gap in the Mountain's helmet. It appears to look a LOT like what we see in 15th century military art, especially concerning painted depiction of the Battle of Crecy. Soldiers wore more open helmets so they could see. Oftimes, faceplates would even be discarded during a melee (especially where certain helmet types, like the bascinet, were concerned).

The (second) helmet that the Mountain uses is based off a sallet without a visor. Some historical manuals seem to suggest that the visor was mainly to protect from arrows and may not have been used during melee combat. Of course, removable visors did exist. All that said, the chance that a thrust straight to the face is what "does you in" in a duel scenario is highly unlikely.

The kingsguard armour is a mixture of practicality and ornamental, also the mountain has a variant on a frog-helm specifically for jousting.

I'd just like to point out at the start, I highly doubt the "rich and powerful" Lannisters actually do any fighting whatsoever, their armor is like wearing really expensive designer clothes, it makes no difference it may even be worse, the point is that it's to showoff that they're "Leaders" and so forth. However I do agree that some areas of their armor is overlooked.
@pityu1908 жыл бұрын
Rich and powerful nobles are still nobles, they are knights, who fight in wars. Jamie Lannister is one of the best knights in Westeros, and also a member of the Kingsguard (he is the leader in the last book, i dont know if he is a guard leader in the show), he fights a lot, so he needs a real armor, not just a transparent of his money.

Something you should consider about Bryenne's and the Mountain's armor: Chainmain is heavy as fuck! a 'slightly longer' chain mail lower part on her armor would increase the weight a lot, and she's already wearing a heavy one. A heavier armor would surely hurt her aggressive fighting style. Now check the Mountain's armor... those fucking chainmail arms must weight a fucking TON. Of course it's only to stress how strong he is, but check again: he's got a lot of plating and also a lot of chain armor. I practice with armors every week and I'd never dare to try that armor. Bonus: Chainmail is actually not that big of a deal against thrusting. If all he's got under that chainmail was his gamberson, he'd be royaly fucked against a spearman as good as Oberyn
@SnapJelly8 жыл бұрын
a mail shit for and adult male would weigh about 15kg, most of the weight resting on the hips
@zaratrustamaster8 жыл бұрын
15kg at most. The one I wear weights about 10kg. Oh, something else: too long chainmail, or excessive loose lower armor (like in The Mountain's case, but longer/heavier) can actually hurt the fighter's stability as it jiggles around during the fight
@abelbabel84848 жыл бұрын
Most of the weight on the shoulders. Everything above the belt weighs at them.
@abelbabel84848 жыл бұрын
The mail shirt I got is short (goes down to about mid-thigh), has short sleeves and weighs just shy of 14kg. It's not especially well made or dense either, just the cheapest mass-produced stuff that's actually riveted. A full hauberk made like it probably is heavier than 20kg. Also, good point about the loose stuff. It's also a danger that it snags somewhere or someone gets a hold of it and pulls you off balance. Especially when grappling, just like when the judoka grab each others bathrobe. :)

Jamie Lannister seems to be wearing a different suit in the second picture. In the first picture, the pauldron is obviously way too small and doesn't even fit (and it looks like he's only wearing one, for his left shoulder). In the second picture, the pauldrons now fit his arm but still there is no armpit protection. And not much protection for his groin, either.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong. Jorah Mormont had the best armor in season 1. Watch his fight with the blood-rider (S01E09) he has everything, plate, chainmail, greaves, a gambeson, his pauldrons were big enough to overlap with his breastplate, he had a gauntlet on at least his right hand, his chainmail covered the weak spots where his armor didn't overlap on his joints. The only thing he didn't have was a helmet and sabatons. Stannis Baratheon had decent armor too, not a lot of plating, but still better than a lot of characters. Also, the helmet on the kingsguard is ridiculous. It might have scale to protect the neck, but the top of the helmet is super dumb. The helmet is supposed to deflect a strike, not catch it and make it break your neck.
@SnapJelly8 жыл бұрын
you're right... sooo how does this prove I'm wrong?
@Tetratronic8 жыл бұрын
You Said Brienne had the best armor, which simply isn't true, that's all. And like I said, the Kingsuard helmet that you said was "good though", is actually complete trash. The scale is alright, but the three massive ridges on the top completely negate any kind of quality the scale provides, because if someone was to hit you from the top of the head, the blade wouldn't slide off your head, but instead catch one of the ridges and either break your neck, or break the side of your face, when it pulls the helmet to the side. That's why real helmets kept evolving into more rounded or bullet-shaped tips, except the Vikings, who got it right from the start.
@SnapJelly8 жыл бұрын
No, I said: ''what I think is the best set of armor.'' when talking about Brienne and the ridges on the helmets of the kingsguard would be a problem against heavy weapons like hammers yea.. but agains a sword not so much. It's not preferable but hardly worth calling them trash.

For the kingsguard armor it's ceremonial so it's mentioned to be mostly functional
@1Buttonmasher7 жыл бұрын
Is that why they go into battle wearing it? Like in the Battle of the Blackwater?
@koreancowboy425 жыл бұрын
@@1Buttonmasher it is meant for ceremonial, but they were named to the kings guard for no reason. Those are are good with the sword are put to the kings guard. Like Ser Sebastian Selmy (I forgot his first name so I guessed lol) He was the best fighter in the kings guard and had no problem wearing the armor. So depending how good the fighter. Also the battle of the black water only two of the kings guard fought is because Joffery ordered them to go with his uncle to fight and represent the king in battle. And the kings guard had to wear that armor and can never change the armor to some other armor unless they were relieved of their kings guard oath to be free.

@sergarlantyrell78476 жыл бұрын
Historically, armour was used to keep the wearer alive (also to show off, but that is secondary), so people would wear as "much" of it as they could afford. The goal being suitability sometimes you need to trade ridged plates for mobility, which is why there are significant differences between cavalry and infantry armour and between tournament and battlefield armour. GoT is meant to be set in an equivalent to about the wars of the roses era, so ~1450 and given the descriptions of the armours some characters have, it fits this time. Armorers at the time could cover 90% of the body in large plates of steel, while ANY GAPS would have been covered by mail. We do not see this in GoT. There are gaps left right and center, arms not covered, legs almost never covered. And when they are, its often just strips of leather with gaps. Has nobody in the costume department heard of mail? They only needed a little strip at the bottom and small patches at the joints, nothing too expensive. These people were knights for the most part, and they've got armour made of strips of leather for a joust? The breastplates we do see made of metal are usually too long and would stop people bending at the waist. hence the "wasp-waist" look of medieval armour. Helmets are another thing, they look silly and inconsistent in the show. Guard types would have open-faced sallets or kettle hats, something like that, cheap, protective enough for purpose. Knights and lords, typically have more expensive visor-ed helmets, bascinets or armets mostly. Wouldn't put them on at all till they were needed then only use the visor sparingly. Knights without helmets in battle is stupid unless its for some story reason. If its for audience recognition reasons, have distinctively DECORATED armour, use colours. Kingsguard - WHITE, Jamie - (shiny) GOLD, Tywin - RED (and cloth of gold) etc Use cloaks of house colours, have house devices on the armour and shield and cloak etc. It's not hard to make them look unique AND functional.
@SpaghettiToaster8 жыл бұрын
Joffrey's armor is decorative/ceremonial; it's not meant for protection.

I always thought the mountain's helmet was perfectly sized for a great helm, due to the fact that they would often be worn with a lesser helmet underneath. The thing that confuses me is that it doesn't appear to have proper suspension, so the helmet rests on his shoulders instead of floating from a point on top of his head.
@gyllkrans8 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't actually say that the Mountain's first helmet was too big, especially for a tournament. Compare with the Pembridge helm for instance, that helm is quite massive. would say however that the front is too flat, and the visor too vulnerable for a tournament. For that type of tournament the knights tended to have helmets that would make a lance glance off the helmet and the eye slits tended to be very narrow.
@Raptor3028 жыл бұрын

A gambeson is pretty good protection indeed but if your enemy gets a good strike in.. you're probably screwed
@aaronsmith34848 жыл бұрын
true
@HalstenSnowborn8 жыл бұрын
A gambeson is just a padded jacket, filled with cotton, wool, or linen as the padding. A sharp sword can get through it quite easily, and the gambeson on its own does nothing to protect against blunt force trauma, so if you're a medieval soldier and you're caught on the battlefield with your best protection being a gambeson, your chances of surviving are not very good at all. What it IS good for is padding underneath harder and heavier metal armour, like chainmail, plate, and scalemail, as it helps to cushion the body from any kinetic force applied to the outer armour that might otherwise travel through and hurt the wearer, and thus helps prevent injuries to spots like the ribs, elbows, chest, pelvis, etc.
@Staremperor8 жыл бұрын
scale armor as neck guard. I wouldn't do that. Scale armor isn't good in stopping upward blows (especially thrusts). Neck is quite high and thus is more likely to be hit in upward direction.
