There has been a long standing engineering debate for and against LSDs. There is a serious advantage with and open differential which is high speed stability. When you're making a lane change at 150 mph a torsen-type differential will not distribute power as safely as a open one. The magical achievement of the late 2000s was the electro-mecanical locking differential with the a first serious appearance in the f10 m5 (2012) and in the 458 (2010). A very good example of the two sides of the pro LSD or against LSD debate is BMW vs MB in the development of the e92 M3 and w204 C63 respectively. The w204 was released fall of 2007 with nearly 500hp and an open differential. Mercedes opted that technology had come to a point when they would be able to manage excessive slip with through computer but BMW knew from experience that this wouldn't work. Later during the release of the next generation c63 (the w205) Mercedes effectively admired that it was foolish for a near 500hp car to run an open differential. The thinking in the development of the the previous generation c63 was that they would be able to manage the car through their brilliant new TC and ESC systems and fit an open differential which would be better and safer. I believe the same thinking was applied during the development of the current DB11

I used to work with the (totally separate) companies who made body panels, seats and wing mirrors for Aston Martin. Engines were either bought from, or developed largely with Ford or Jaguar. God knows who made other parts. Point is, car manufacturers often assemble a collection of parts purchased from elsewhere and brand the package as their own. Anyone claiming that the DB11 isn't an Aston because it uses Mercedes parts would struggle to find ANY modern Aston that is an Aston by their logic. The use of Mercedes parts is just that bit more high profile so people are more aware of it. As for needing a V12 for it to be a proper Aston... Just no. Aston had no V12 tradition until the DB7 Vantage, which was already Jaguar and Ford parts-bin special. The DB5 was a six cylinder. Enough said. The DB11 is real.

Hey Sid, Good review of a lovely car. Just one problem, I kept getting distracted by the lovely steel bezel Omega 300M that you were wearing. To answer your question, I think that the DB11 is a superb GT and very underrated. It is also great value as a used proposition when you take both the performance and exclusivity into account. I still far prefer the sound of the previous naturally aspirated V12 but a twin turbo V12 is still a great thing.

Sid need some advice... DB11 (V8) or C63S? Thinking about moving on from the C63 and toying with the Aston DB11 (V8) as a potential replacement.. however the only niggle I have is that it has the same 4l AMG engine for twice the cost?

Interesting! Ive just traded my C63s coupe for a DB11 Volante, no regrets, only thing I missed, was the "Distronic" semi autonomous cruise control - which actually makes you very lazy! I'm over it now, and re-living the Aston Dream (its my 5th Aston..) It sounds good in Sport+ mode, but not as "Dirty" as the 63 did, obviously more enjoyable with the top down - Go for it, I say!

@@Stoic511 I've got the launch spec, which is Arizona Bronze with Winter Wheat Interior and Mocha accents, smoked tail lights and alloys (10 spoke). Aquamarine Black is nice, has blue metal flakes in, and Skyfall silver looks nice too, just to give you something to think about, before you sign on the dotted..!
