Kinda sad that it isn't a genuine lore-extension and just a cashgrab. Because Pandora has so much culinary potential! There are 2 Na'vi Tribes we know a lot about, a few that were mentioned and shown, the human rations, the Avatar Rations, etc. Heck, make a chapter about Jake sully either intentionally or accidentily mixing his earth cuisine with that of the Omatikaya (make it the 'family fusion meal' chapter). Have some CREATIVITY, WRITERS.

and the cookbook looked so depressing. they couldn’t have plated the food on leaves and large shells like actual na’vi do? it looked like they just copy pasted the characters onto the book and added some concept art here and there… they had so much world building to work with 😭😭

We only get the barest mentions of their food in the og lore like their staple protein being a grub that tastes like shrimp but a bit sweeter. I could definitely see Scully grilling up "shrimp" burgers for the family.

I get the health mindful message that they were going for, but it would really hurt to add spices or foods inspired by navi culture? I feel they should've gone that route. Like hey they eat mostly fruits with their dishes, so here is slow roasted elk with cherry glaze and tons of fruits n nut for flavor. It the closest we can make to it 😂

From what little I know of the Avatar series, there is a surprising amount of lore and worldbuilding built around the movies and it's confusing that none of that was utilized for this cookbook. The recipes certainly looked interesting even if they lacked in tastiness.

To be fair, the human military would probably be looking to source their diet primarily from the planet they are stationed on, given how long it would take to send anything to Pandora via spaceship. Modern military rations have a shelf life of 3-5 years. By the time they got to Pandora from Earth, they wouldn't be fit to issue Also, military rations are generally designed as a short term solution to keep soldiers fed until an actual field kitchen can be set up. Keeping a field kitchen operational would probably require at least some locally sourced foodstuffs on an alien planet

It looks like it has potential with some of the recipes, I'd just double the seasoning next time and maybe add one or two extra bits into the spice mix to get some more flavour. They look good on the plate, but it does seem underwhelming

This is so disappointing to see- an actual detailed and elaborate Avatar themed cookbook with effort put into it would be amazing! I feel making a cookbook like that for this universe would be a goldmine. At least Disney World made some effort to create food and drinks that look like they could vaguely be from the world of Pandora.. and that's quick service food in a theme park! Thanks for the review :)

It feels like a travesty to have this sorta spiritual movie with a certain soul to it depicting natives fighting back colonists for their resources, having a pretty bland cookbook for it feels like a slap in the face ngl.
@Your-Least-Favorite-Stranger8 күн бұрын
I mean it's in line with traditional native american cooking at the very least; salt and sugar tend to be viewed as foreign fascinations. Pueblo cooking for example focuses on the flavor of the ingredients and how they play off one another rather than relying on salt, sugar, etc to bring out certain flavors; same goes for Inuit cooking (the podcast Gastropod goes into different traditional foodways if you're interested. Bile and controlled rot, like stinkhead salmon, are also favorable flavors). I don't think the cookbook had ANY of that in mind when they went the route they did, but it kinda unintentionally did that bit right. Seasoning, salting, sugaring isn't a Native American thing
@EncontheCrow8 күн бұрын
@Your-Least-Favorite-Stranger I mean sure, but the Navi are only based on those native cultures, not a one to one equivalent. It just feels a little disappointing to buy a cookbook and either have to add seasoning or purposely go in knowing when you make the food, it's not going to perhaps be as satisfying as you'd hope. Especially when it's based on a fictional alien world where you could do anything with the cuisine. I do enjoy foods where just the well cooked or prepared ingredients are paramount and do not need to add anything, really. I'd still try food like this as I've always had a love and interest in food and the culture that created it. It's a tap into a people and their lives and what I would consider the "soul" of most people. But I just want to clarify that this isn't bad, just sucks to see there's no lore writing and fun flavors at play. I also don't know alot of native cooking as you rarely know anyone who can and wants to make you those foods. So, I didn't realize that these were based on traditional meals that people have eaten for a while. If it were me, I'd have to season something well or even overdue it from most standards. I have problems with my sense of smell, which affects my taste. Otherwise, if I don't, I barely taste anything at all with certain foods, at least.
@BJD12thDoctor7 күн бұрын
I don't have this cook book (do have the other Avatar cook book, the Last Airbender one) but it looks like they could have developed these recipes more. And they could have been way more creative with the presentation. It does have some nice art work but in all it's just so un-creative.
@fietehermans99039 күн бұрын
A smoothie having avocado in it is like the ultimate vegan hipster joke. Shame they didn’t stick entirely to the theme: have the Navi dishes be entirely vegan to emphasise their connection to nature, and have the military rations be fatty with lots of meat. Would love to have seen a (possibly vegan, depending on the chapter) chilli inspired by that alien Native American influence
@g.waughan9 күн бұрын

on one hand I understand why Earth's food has no meat, given that Earth has become an overexploited planet having cattle is probably impossible, and the technology level doesn't really allow for stuff like synthetic meat...on the other hand this cookbook looks really generic, doesn't really provide much additional lore, the recipes don't feel "Pandora-esque" or Sci-fi-esque enough, it's just generic modern healthy food with fancy names. Kinda disappointing
