I think the problem here is why BWF don't open up about what has been changed on how the speed is being measured. There should be no secrecy in stats. It is why fans aren't taking the record seriously anymore. Heck, even we all know Hawkeye is far from perfect, with many blatant mistakes in the past.

if the sole question is to understand how fast was FHF smashing. perhaps an experiment to have current smashes recorded with both new and old measuring methods to get a correlation between the 2 sets of data and extrapolate from there. However it would consume alot of resources

Fu Hei Feng's Smashes still looks more powerful to me. He also could produce several barrages of quality powerful Smashes consecutively... Note, rackets nowadays have more improved technology. My other top pick for best Smashes are Praveen, Goh V Shem, Jung Jae Sung and Markis Kido. ;)

I agree with this video but you should note Axelsens 2019 record was for singles, Ivanov and Mads Peter Kolding both hit smashes in the 420kph range in men's doubles around/after that time.

The radar guns are located in the middle of the court, feet away from the initial contact point between the racket and the shuttle therefore the recorded speed will always be much slower than what it actually is. Shuttles decelerate very quickly, only less than half the speed will remain after reaching the other side of the court. I think what BWF did to the hawkeye technology is they figured out a way to measure the shuttle speed as close to the initial contact point as possible, thus getting the highest recorded speed. If we put prime Fu Hai Fung to today's court and measure his smash speed I'm sure he will be in the 500 kph range with ease.

as long as there is no neutral governing body to keep badminton records, all these hawk system numbers will remain sus. we should keep the radar guns as well imo

This video doesn’t address how racket technology is also changing all the time. It shouldn’t be all that surprising that new records are made as technology improves. You can compare this with swimming as well, where a similar pattern was observed as swimwear with less drag was developed. As badminton gets more popular worldwide, Yonex and its competitors will have bigger R&D budgets to make faster and faster rackets, so this trend might continue for a while.

@@vijayendranvijay457 I did not know that, but nonetheless, that racket was introduced in 2017. My point is more that eg when Fu Haifeng was Rankireddy’s age, it was 2006. The rackets were different back then. That’ll also impact smash records, etc.

Racket technology is not going to give 400kmph almost every smash. The point of the video is how the measurement is taken now. In The trajectory of the shuttle there is bound to be loss of speed. The question is this.

When you decide to measure the speed before the shuttle leave the racket any number can be made up. We need to bring back the old method of measuring and put it aside of the new one, you'll see how nonsensical the current measuring method is. The Fu Haifeng footage , the Kolding smash and other legacy ones are no doubt in the leagues of today shots.

Scissors kick smash most likely has more power (less angle). If you jump before smashing you can't use your legs/hips to generate any rotation force it has to all come from your arm and core.

maybe it is not because the method of measuring has changed but rather the technology in badminton rackets have evolved over time, hence what makes the shuttle travel a lot faster. That's what I think as a badminton fan. Edited: the context of this comment is about the recent changes in hawkeye measurements and not about the difference w the old radar gun technology

Couldn't be anymore wrong. Just 10 years ago pro players were struggling to defend smashes that were 280 kmph but you are telling me people are defending smashes that are 150kmph faster. No chance. Another good example would be to look at players like Setiawan and Ahsan who have played in the Fu Haifeng era and now. You think Setiawan is suddenly smashing 170 kmph faster when he is almost 40 compared to when he was in his prime just due to racket improvements? Do you know how stupid that sounds?
@MrJ4ckie
@MrJ4ckie Жыл бұрын
Youre objectively and provably wrong, though. If you measured speeds over a longer distance, nothing would change much, the only thing that's changed is that the shuttle is being measured closer and closer to the racket, providing a speed that's getting closer to what it leaves the racket with. If you watch the sport, it hasn't become that much faster. Racket technology, for the most part, isn't even advanced by the equipment companies themselves, but entirely different companies producing harder, more durable carbon materials that the sports brands then buy to make their rackets. It has allowed for lighter and stiffer rackets that can sustain higher string tensions, thus allowing for somewhat better defense, slightly higher smash speeds (not even close to 200kph, though) and more accurate play.

The thing is who plays badminton at decent level will definitely know that most powerful smashing technique is full jump smash not china jump not scissor kick jump smash you can't generate enough power with those both smashes than full jump now days a simple china jump smash or little or no jump smash from player also records speed at 400 that's pathetic that on same level one's full jump smash speed and one's no jump smash speed is same
