I returned my Milwaukee 2767 after two days it broke. I was perplexed and very disappointed. Just bought a new Ridgid with higher torque for $150, and 2 4ah batteries with charger for $100 from home Depot website (on sale). I paid more just for the Milwaukee impact alone and it's less powerful.🤷

This just stinks of the engineering department being punished for overachieving a la GM. I doubt the executives look at anything but sales data and production costs. There is probably some agreement between the parent company and HD that involves exchange of funds or sales quotas and those numbers not working out so the simple increase costs to increase profits. I try to never overthink executive decisions, there probably isn't any logic in them. They are probably several separate decision that together seem confusing.

I really hope this is just the parent company testing the bones of the new Milwaukee high torque in the ridged colors. It looks like they realizes the batteries were to good and had to handicap the impact to not take away from that Milwaukees

TTI brands (Milwaukee, Ryobi and AEG) do not share engineers, patents or other design info. They also work in different cities. They sometimes share a factory, but not always and that is pretty common across the industry. That is not to say the parent company does not have a finger on what projects to work on or general tool quality of the brands. Torque Test Channel is likely right on the chip shortage, container shipping costs and general manufactuing pains atm being the driver behind this. Also no rubber overmold means they are easier to recycle

A TTI rep told me that Ridgid didn't sell enough of Octane and wanted to make the batteries consistent. Like now Ridgid has the standard batteries and then a max output battery. Beforehand they had a standard, a higher output and then the Octane. And like someone said, the two companies are owned by TTi but aren't sharing much. They structure Ridgid to be an affordable tool that can contend with higher end tools.

The Ridgid name is licensed to them from Emerson to make tools specifically for Home Depot. Home Depot has a lot of input of what's released under the Ridgid brand when it comes to power tools.

It's sad to see "our best offering" performance apparently slip backwards, but, just intuitively, it does seem like making a Max Output battery with some 21700 cells would remedy a lot of this issue. BTW... if Ridgid is getting a little too close to Milwaukee price/performance territory, I have a suggestion for TTI: How about innovating the Milwaukee lineup and improving its performance, instead of hamstringing Ridgid? Nobody likes intentional degradation. Yes, I am speculating wildly here, but that's how a lot of us will interpret this year's developments!

This wrench is on sale right now at HD in a kit with 2 4ah batteries and a bag for 249. I'd been looking at impacts for quite some time, and finally pulled the trigger on this kit. Makes you wonder what will happen next with this wrench and batteries. Looking closer at the current kit batteries at HD, it's hard for me to tell how they match up with what I've seen on this and other channels. The look of the battery seems to have changed. It's like they've slapped a new sticker on "something else". The kit part number is R86211B-AC93044SBN on HD's site, and the child part number/description is R87004 18V 4.0 Ah Batteries. I'd love to hear any input you'd have on this kit/battery current combo. It's your fault I'm even looking at this (huge LOL). UPDATE: The tool and battery kit arrived yesterday, with 2 4ah batteries as noted above. Something that was a bit annoying was the "bag" that came with the kit did NOT fit the wrench (like the kit in the video did), but only the batteries and charger. It seems that Rigid is now selling the battery kit separately with different batteries (not max), and without a full size bag. The tests shown above compare the new max batteries in that particular kit against an older "octane" I think. The kit I received appears to have has something different than either of the above batteries. Makes me wonder how this particular battery would compare in the test. I guess at least it not the MAX battery, which seems to "nerf" the wrench. Man, this is why I had been shopping for a corded high torque impact, but couldn't find anything in the 1/2 inch spec that were as dominating as this wrench, and for a somewhat reasonable price. Most of the 1/2 corded wrenches (even the Bauer corded) just aren't in this league, and seem like they have sketchy build quality I did call and complain to HD about the misleading bag, they agreed it was deceptive/confusing and got an additional 10 percent off the order. I'm now in the Ridgid LSA registration queue for the tool and batteries. We shall see how that goes. Since I bought the tool from HD's website, I don't expect any problems. Sorry for all the details, just wanted to document the purchase and battery experience on this channel in case anyone is interested. The wrench is like holding the Hammer of Thor!! It's definitely a two hand tool.

On the job and in real world I can't tell a difference. I don't torture my tools like vcg construction does. So as long as I'm not putting 100lbs of force behind a drill, or trying to sprint while cutting a pice of plywood, or hang all my weight on a recip cut, etc... I've found that any battery bigger than 2ah does the job just fine. I like the octane, but they are much larger and I've found their size to get in the way at times.

I just picked up a pair of octane 3ah open box batteries for $80. Both had 0 cycles confirmed with bluetooth. Really woke up my gen 5x mid torque compared to the 4ah batteries I was using. It's a shame these are going away but there are great deals to be had right now.

Picked one of these up for $140 new from Direct Tools Outlet today. Even though a high torque won't be a tool I use every day, there have been a few times that my mid-torque Ridgid barely cut it. I already own two 3.0 Octane batteries and one 9ah so I can maximize the power out of this beast.

I've seen this from all the top brands including Milwaukee and Dewalt. They optimize performance value until they reach a certain level of "reputation" so to speak. Then optimize for profit with a new line claiming to be the next big thing. I would bet that the new batteries are cheaper to make and that they will cash in on the reputation they built with the octane. I've seen Milwaukee do this with some of their tools where the new gen is clearly under performing with their last gen with loss of performance and features. I've not seen them really do it with the batteries though. I've also seen Dewalt do this. Most recently with their venerable chop saws. It's like they build up reputation of one kind or another and then cash in on that reputation until it starts to hurt sales again and then the cycle starts over. I think part of what drives this is the whole fanboy mentality. Another part of it is the fact that once you get someone to buy into a line they feel "stuck" in that line because the amount of investment they have put in. It's enough to make me consider buying into multiple brands. My M18 fuel hammer drill just past it's warranty, and what ya know, the chuck is wobbling. Not a lot, but enough to make drilling holes a huge pain. I have multiple other m18 hammer drills and never had a chuck wobble, with extremely hard use. Worse, they changed their chuck screw with this model and it's nearly impossible to get a new chuck, and that's assuming it is the chuck and not some thing deeper. Which I'm not convinced of after having the chuck off and possibly seeing wobble from the chuck mount.

Exactly why i was never a fan of milwaukee enough to dive deep into their platform. I only got what i needed that proved to be better than other offerings. The m12 3/8 stubby and high speed ratchet.

It's always interesting to me that you seem to find the batteries based on a single row of 21700s perform better than those based on a double-row of 18650s in parallel; the specs indicate that 18650s should have well over half the current rating of 21700s in general, so unless they're losing a lot with some very inefficient battery tabs, I'm not sure why it's happening. Fascinating results nonetheless.

The 21700 cells don't suffer from voltage sage the way 18650's do which likely has a lot to do with that. Makes me wonder how much better the DeWalt and Milwaukee 6ah 21700 cell batteries are!

@@vhateverlie Voltage sag is basically just another way of describing cell internal resistance, and for a given chemistry (current-focused in power tools) and geometry (cylindrical in this case), is mostly just down to total cell size and capacity. A 21700 isn't twice the capacity of an 18650 and shouldn't be able to output twice the current with the same voltage sag as an 18650, yet TTC often gets better results with the single row of 21700s rather than the double 18650s. Something else must be afoot; better control board FETs/traces, better battery tabs and spot welding, smarter cell monitoring allowing the tool to pull the pack lower without triggering undervoltage protection... who knows.

@@siberx4 voltage sage is when you ask for a large output and to achieve a higher overall output the voltage drops and the amps increase if you can maintain that higher voltage and same amps you're getting much more power. You don't think that new, bigger, better technology batteries wouldn't achieve that they output more amps, have less sag than 18650's the only drawback is less surface area to dissipate heat but they don't usually operate long enough to heat soak.

@@vhateverlie 18650 cells can have their specs wildly different. 18650 can range from 1300mah - 3500mah and 20A-50A discharge. What's going on here is the cheaper way to make a high output battery is using tool grade 18650's that are pennies compared to the 21700 versions. So you get under performing double 18650's compared to one 21700. Ridgid knows that most home owners wont know the difference so they make more money on marketing the cheaper batteries.

I heard that the Octane 3Ah battery was the only Octane battery with 21700 cells. All other Octane batteries have 18650 cells. I believe you used the 3Ah Octane battery in your test vs the 4Ah Max output.

The Bluetooth feature is so sweet, you can leave your tools at the job site and lock the batteries so the clients kids couldn’t turn them on! Not only that when the painter put a tarp over your batteries and you forget them(Because you can’t see them) you can go on your app and see the last place you had them. I just got into the Ridgid platform. Got the 4 set brushless (hammer drill, 1/4" impact, recipe saw & oscillating multi tool), octane 7 1/4 circ saw, octane router & jigsaw, orbital sander, 3 panel light AND I just received a BRAND new octane 3.0 battery purchased on home Depot's website that stated could be registered with LSA. So I registered it and it's pending, along with all other tools. My only concern is IF the LSA goes through for it, and IF I ever need to get it serviced, that they'll replace it with a MaxOutput or whatever current battery they have 😖 fantastic videos, thank you so much!

Got a makita drill and 1/4 driver on sale supposed to have 3ah batteries but they where sold out so I got 4ah same price. Really like them bought a grass trimmer makita. Takes a very long time to run the batteries down. Just a home gamer. I gave up on off brands awhile back. They just don't last or they keep changing batteries

I'd love comparisons about the different battery management circuits. Dewalt makes an XR adapter for older drills. A cheap adapter with no smarts that uses Rigid batteries might be as good or better. I'm basically obsessed with the idea of sourcing one battery and using it on whatever tool I want in case you haven't noticed. I'm thinking about making a Dewalt battery adapter for my Ryobi and just sticking the entire Ryobi battery circuit board in the adapter, and doing the same for any other tool I might get; Dewalt/knock off batteries and Dewalt charger, done.

I have been using ridgid 18v tools for a decade now. I have old 4ah batteries, a slew of octane batteries in different sizes (3-9ah), some new high output 4ah, and some non high output 4ah. On the job and in the real world.... I can't tell an significant difference between them (except 9ah, it is drastically more powerful). Outside of a test one can't typically feel a difference in 20 ft/lbs in the real world. Whether it be on a grinder, impact, circular saw, or recip. I just grab a battery and use it until it's dead. Never have I said to myself, "the octane battery could have made this cut 1/10th of a second faster. I should only use them"......

These are both on the same dyno. Are you talking about the newer face plate? The size of the face plate doesn't matter as long as it's not flexing. Bolt tension isn't dependent on these dimensions. Besides, we calibrate the same way before test day each time.

In that light I am looking at getting another 1/2" battery powered impact but will wait a while longer for some tested revelations above the marketing and shenanigans.

Have they changed the model number for the beast ridgid? From what I can see on HD's website the beasts model number is R86211B and the Gen5X style wrench is R86011B, but that seems to be opposite of what you guys have listed. Are they switching the model numbers so people go looking for the beast but buy the gen5x? What's more, I have an old gen5x wrench that is indeed listed as R86011SB in the warranty registration. What model number should I be looking for if I want the best ridgid 1/2" impact wrench? Thanks guys

Did anyone notice the variance in torque at 5 seconds across the three runs shown (meaning the 5 second run and 5 second into the 10 second and 15 second runs)? The values comes in at 594 ft-lbs, 524, ft-lbs, and 563 ft-lbs, respectively. Makes me curious how many runs are completed for each test before concluding a torque figure. Based on what was shown here, there appears to be a fairly large variance from run to run. The same discrepancy can be seen for the 10 second torque comparing the 10 second run to effectively 10 seconds into the 15 second run.

The Max Output® batter was slightly weaker than the Octane® because you needed to use the Max Output Octane® for more torque. For super torque use their Max Output Octane Power Plus®; otherwise if you want a balance then use the Max Octane Power Performance Plus®. I'm glad they don't make it confusing at all.

No percentage lights, just resistors and maybe a small board to overcome the new short comings with their new line up for those of us with older tools? Pretty disappointing results from the "new and improved battery". I bought the exact setup you have here. I've been scouring the web trying to find some 3ah octane with no luck (unless you want a 2 pack for almost $200) Mine is just my garage/truck impact so max torque numbers aren't that important, but I'd like to have a non handicapped tool. What other octane batteries are running the same cells as the 3ah?

So this is still the octane r86211b impact not the new "brushless" r86212b, I like that the octane batteries are holding their own still, I don't know the big deal with running the smaller 18650 in most batteries when 21700 was used only in the 3ah

Bro for less than the price of a tool only Milwaukee High Torque I just bought this new one with a Octane 3.0 a bit ago at a smoking deal that I couldn't pass up. I'd like to have this soon to be Unicorn of an impact with a lifetime warranty as a back up if and when I need it. I'm pretty much invested in the M12 M18 platform, but that being said even Ridgids latest battery's are close enough in power to the Milwaukee. If the minor drop in power is a concern just go out and pick up some new octane batteries while you can. I know they sell Ridgid to Milwaukee battery adapters for $25 so im going to try one out with my HO 3.0 Milwaukee battery. BTW I came back to re-watch these awesome videos TTC Puts out on this bad boy after my purchase🤣. No regrets for me tho👍

Seems like the dream is over for us with ridgid. I own nearly the whole range of ridgid minus the radios and the grease gun. I've noticed on my weekly HD trips that they are massively increasing their tool range with a lot of cheaper models particularly in the drill driver areas. They look, feel and are cheaper in every way. They clearly felt the need to knock ridgid back down a peg. I'd say going forward you'll want to be very careful of the model number when you want to pick up one of their tools.

I’ve noticed this too I always been a Ridgid fan and bought a 6 tool kit combo they had on Black Friday and noticed that the drill was so cheaply made I was like what the hell they accidentally put a Ryobi a painted it orange lol

Everyone talking smack about these batteries need to chill. Unless the tool has the extra two battery connection tabs on the side like the R86115 does, than the battery is not being used to its full capability. Look at the maxoutput battery connections, look at the tool connectors. They have two new side connectors and that's what the tool needs to have to fully utilize the batteries power. AND ITS NOT SPECULATION. i use ridgid on the job site every day and the old octane and gen5x tools had issues performing tasks that the new MaxOutput line makes a cake walk of. Don't jump to conclusions just yet

That’s a real shame about the octane batteries. Sounds like they flew too close to the sun and got knocked down a peg as not to upset the hierarchy. Still, the tool itself seems like a beast. Might have to pick one up before they are gone for good.

The issue is that Octane batteries were insanely expensive to make, as a result of having one of, if not the most technologically advanced battery platforms on the market. Combine that with the price ceiling than M18 effectively creates, and you’ve got a low to no profit battery.

I didn't think tti would allow Ridgid to outperform Milwaukee for to long it was probably a miscalculation didn't think it was going to perform as well as it did and couldn't get the performance out of Milwaukee they needed without going over budget

Nah, predates that. It just talks to your phone's app and tells you charges cycles, temperature, status, if it's been over heated, whether it's a Virgo or Leo and it's relationship status.

I looked up the FCC ID (i read it to be 2ADHKSAMB11 in the video) and it isn't, it is BLE (blootooth low energy) only microcontroller (with supporting circiuitry), but i can see the similarity. (Also, it says atmel corp on the board, and it would be a sad day to see them repackedge a competitors product)

The new brushless impact driver outperforms the Octane. But that looks to be the exception. The rest of the new line looks to be a step up from the brushless Gen5X, but a step down from the Octane. The new batteries are probably an improvement overall, but until we see the new 6Ah, the Octane 3.0 is still the battery of choice. Yours is the first test I’ve seen where the 4Ah Maximum Output held close to the Octane 3.0.

I just purchased a 6ah MO this weekend. Have not tried it yet but they are available now. It was kind of pricey but until now I've only had 2,3 and 4 ah packs and wanted something bigger for my circular saw.

we've tested it with a 6ah, and it's very close to the 3ah due to 18650 vs 21700. BUT we have not with the 9ah, and based on recent testing of a similar flavor we'll show shortly, I imagine it would be bonkers.

We briefly borrowed a friend's 6ah battery early on and the batteries traded places enough times during the testing we deemed it not interesting enough to include, edit, data chart so we stopped testing. I believe the 6ah had a slight edge but it was changing by the run

The 3AH octane is samsung 21700 30t is the goto cell for current. The 30T is 3000mah rated for 35A continuous, where is the best for 18650s are sony VTC6/samsung 30q which are only 15a. So a 6ah 2p 18650 pack wont hold up to a single string of 21700s. I have a Ryobi P195 pack rebuilt with 40T's and it will outrun any of ryobis packs, even the 9AH HP. I wish TTI would release 2p 21700 packs for ryobi/rigid, but its definitely just there for market separation. The Milwaukee packs are just too good to bring to the other brands, but I can dream about a Ryobi 12AH pack.

I think tool quality should be really taken into consideration here. I work in a shop here in Canada and I prefer Hilti for cordless. I have had a tool in my hand at least once a day for the past 25 years, I have tried them all, I have abused them all. The hilti is king based not on it's power figures from a torque dyno but because of heavy heavy usage without failure which I've seen and experienced with all the other brands. I've seen a good amount of ttc videos but have never heard you even mention them.

This channel is 95% focused on impact wrenches. Hilti's impact wrenches aren't going to do well here either considering this channel is also focused on performance first. Hilti's best wrench is about 10 years behind the competition.
