I wonder how much the anti kickback function plays a role in the test. If your test bolt doest dead stop the tool and keeps turning then the Milwaukee may be throttling the torque and only ramping as the resistance becomes closer to a dead stop. It may be a factor and it would be interesting to see what Milwaukee says about that. They have been pretty straight forward and I haven't known them to need miss represent the tools they produce. I would be willing to bet it is capable of at least closer to the claim because that was to much discrepancy to not throw up a red flag. I think I will wait just a bit before I purchase. But it would be awesome to get feedback from Milwaukee.

Well considering a 12 inch bar gives a 1:1 so if you put 100 lbs on the bar you get 100 at the bolt. Putting 100 lbs on 24 inches gives 200, n so on n so forth

@@benmiller5015 The only issue there is that they calibrated this rig with an older IR impact gun and used its claimed torque rating to compare against other tool brands so the torque displayed here is not the actual measured torque but more of a comparison of how the tool stacks up to that IR impact that was used to calibrate the setup. That is unless they recalibrated to an actual torque wrench since then but I have not seen a video released on that. The comparison to me is useless because I actually want to know what the tool is exactly capable of rather than how much one tool company lied compared to another one.

@@kuhrd I completely agree that an accurate torque measurement of what the guns are making would be nice n comparing a torque wrench or breaker bar on this setup wouldn't be the most accurate. I was just offering the gentleman the rule of using cheater bars n what the affects leverage has on torque. Another way to look at it is with the actual equation of force applied x distance from bolt, divided by 12 = actual torque

@@kuhrd The myth that there IS an exact ft-lbs torque capable number will persist forever. 150 ft-lbs on this greased 1.5" custom bolt and pitch does not equal 150ft-lbs at your house on your lug nut due to a list of reasons. As an attorney who has written product marketing-related language, here are my thoughts on each manufacturer’s written torque claims as shown in your video: 1. Milwaukee: The language used does NOT claim that the tool produces “220 ft-lbs of nut-busting torque” EVEN THOUGH those words are an exact quote. Rather, it is those two tiny, easily glossed over, lead-in (aka, qualifying) words, “up to”, that make all the difference. Whenever you see those magical limiting words “up to” preceding a claim (in this case, a torque claim), it means that literally any amount of torque-from as low as ONE (1) ft-lb-makes that claim valid. If they removed those two words, then-assuming your test unit accurately represents a typical unit of that model-they might need to prepare for a class action lawsuit. In short, these two little words lead me to reasonably conclude that a lawyer wrote and/or edited this claim to protect his client. 2. Kobalt: This language-“generates 180 ft-lbs of torque”-is a clear claim subject to objective testing. Either a typical unit of that model does what they claim, or they’ve lied. And, as your testing shows, they did NOT lie. Therefore, I reasonably conclude that either this was written by an engineer and/or marketing person and never reviewed and/or edited by an attorney, OR an attorney did review it and made the engineer and/or marketing produce objective proof of the claim’s validity before s/he approved it’s publication. To me, this looks like a classic business strategy of “Always deliver more than you promise (aka, underpromise & overdeliver because it leaves the consumer feeling like they got more than they paid for).” DISCLAIMER: NOT LEGAL ADVICE.

I’m nowhere near a professional, but I like to be handy and try to fix things myself. For my DIY projects they have been perfect, even their outdoor equipment (24V weed eater / blower combo) have been great for the size yard I have. I originally wanted Milwaukee just to buy the best of the best, but for around the house and recreation building/fixing things, the Kobalt line has really impressed me, never feel like I’m making a bad purchase with them so far! Plus Lowe’s customer service has been wonderful at my local place. Not to mention the military discount Lowe’s offers that Home Depot doesn’t, Just makes my dollar go a little farther👍

I have the M12, and have had really good luck out of mine. Being an equipment mechanic I run into all kinds of seized and caked on bolts, and haven't had many times where it didn't do what I needed. Maybe I got lucky with mine, but I really can't complain. Oddly enough I bought my tool used off the Cornwell truck. Some guy traded it in like a week after they bought it saying it couldn't remove torque converter bolts out of some car they were working on lol. Either way, being in the field I don't have enough room on my service truck to justify buying another tool with a different battery just because it hits a little harder. I already run half a dozen chargers from Snap-on 14.4, 18V, Dewalt 20, Milwaukee 12, 18V and misc. tools plus my company laptop charger. Another aspect I look at is reliability. The big box hardware store tool brands like Kobalt, Rigid etc. really aren't designed for industrial use anymore. They are marketed and built for the home gamer more often than not. Honestly the only tools that have failed me so far have been Snap-on, but I have owned them the longest and used them the hardest over the years. I would say IMO that the 18V Snap-on tools really are not worth the money and almost everything except 14.4V impact and ratchets are completely useless. The bit driver and 3/8" drill are latterly the worst battery powered tools I've purchased. aren't worth the money anymore now that the other brands have caught up and are much cheaper. I have been slowly phasing them out and relegating them to home toolbox duty.

I do want to point out that the Kobalt one is technically just a standard 24V Max model, not a premium XTR model which is like the Fuel line from Milwaukee. Sadly Kobalt only has 5 XTR tools for the time being if I'm not mistaken, so there isn't an XTR version of this one. I guess one isn't entirely needed, but the comparatively small number of tools Kobalt makes is definitely the biggest weakness of the lineup.

Half the voltage means twice the current for the same wattage. Current determines the required size of the conductors. The motor's wattage is what matters. Doubling the voltage would double the wattage for a few seconds until it lets the smoke out because it's wound for 12 volts, not 24. Even if it was wound for 24 volts, the wattage would probably still be the same because it would still have to dissipate the same amount of heat and maintain the same form factor and price point. There's also the discharge rating of the batteries to consider.

I gotta be honest. I'm still going to buy the M12 right angle impact. For working in auto body, tool clearance takes priority over beans. As much as I'd love to have silly amounts of torque, anything above 80 - 100 ft lbs is massive. Unless it's something like bolts for a truck box or lug nuts, then I need much more obviously. Even then any mid torque I'd have to be careful or would probably snap bolts/studs.

I think it’s more about rewarding the brands who are honest. That way you end up pleasantly surprised when they beat your expectations. Obviously most stretch the truth, but it would feel silly not to encourage honesty a little on these rankings. Max score of 100 keeps it balanced in the charts as well I think. That way there’s no incentive to under-claim as a way to beat the test methods

These companies know exactly what they are doing. They make a whole lot of money by putting higher numbers out than their competition. People walking around in a store can't complete that value formula before they purchase it without inputting their torque claim into the performance category. If the only place in the world these brands get dinged for being overzealous with their advertising is on a made up rank list on a small youtube channel, they should consider that a lucky break.

As a general rule of thumb, I have never been particularly impressed with milwaukee's 12v line. Love their fuel line, but the M12..Just MEH. Kobalt is a tool I've picked up here and there because while they do tend to be a bit inconsistent, every now and again they really knock one out of the park. As for smaller power tools, I just tend to stick to Makita unless something really jumps out to warrant a battery change. The Sub compact line uses the same 18v LXT batteries as the regular LXT tools, performs closer to the full sized versions than they do against other compacts and are usually the same price range as Milwaukee's 12v while vastly outperforming them. Outside certain specialty tools the M12 line is just really really weak.

How do you like the subcompact line? I've been on the fence with investing in them.
@OmegaGamingNetwork
@OmegaGamingNetwork 3 жыл бұрын
@@bent1208 I know about the battery adapters and I forget Everytime I'm looking to buy a new tool lol. I've been very much impressed with the sub compacts honestly. The smaller form factor and the much reduced weight is a real winner for me since they have plenty of power to cover 90% of the tasks I'm doing. Basically I only really pull out the bigger tools when absolutely necessary. I'm not terribly keen on the 2ah batteries they usually come with as it feels like they suffer in power with those. However since they are lighter the 5ah packs don't feel as unwieldy as the bigger tools and I can run far longer. I find myself reaching for my sub impact more than anything else. The recip saw definitely lacks a little power compared to it's full sized brother, but that doesn't make it weak. It fits into spaces the other just won't. Having used the Milwaukee hacksaw, it fits into basically the same spaces and has equal or more power though you really can't go wrong with either. I really feel Makita undersells them. They meet or beat the performance of basically every "cheaper" brand in the same category, are effectively the same price and give you the option to use any Makita tool if you need without having to buy into another battery line.

The Kobalt is very impressive! I'll have to wait for the next gen milwaukee, since I don't want to add yet another battery system.

I purchase 12v tools. I use cheater cords with alligator clips for attaching to the automotive battery. In-line fuse protector keeps it safe.. works great, more power

OF COURSE THE BOXES LIE. Them's Searz Horsepower figures, pard. I haven't bought an angle impact yet (retired now) but I noticed that the Bosch 14.4v impactor was just as powerful as my Makita 18v and my new freebie, a Milwaukee 24v. Tests like these comparisons are extremely valuable to potential buyers, and we thank you for them, guys. Domini domini (a little blessing there) ;)

Getting ready to buy one of these kobalt impacts because of this video. If that isn't advertisement I don't know what is. These manufacturers should be groveling to you gents.

Those torque numbers are important, but quality of build and durability also factor in. I work in a foundry that's constantly being wrenched on, and we're talking the harshest environments you can find. We chew up cheap tools and spit them out on a daily basis. Harbour Freight stay away! We have an extensive 1" airline system throughout the building pushing out 145 psi, so pneumatic tools are the preferred. But we all have Milwaukee cordless for convenience and they seem to hold up the best. Now, our supply house is a Milwaukee dealer, so they push that over all else. I would be willing to give that Kobalt a shot to see how durable it is. For the price, I can buy two for the price of one Milwaukee.

I actually own and use a Makita right angle impact at work. It's a pretty old style tool with a brushed motor, and I'm sure it's not going to compete with the tools you tested today, but it does take a beating. I have put some serious miles on it in the last 5 years or so. XLT02Z is the model, it boasts a whopping 44 ft. Lbs.

44lbs?! Is it an impact, or just a right angle ratchet?

Recently purchased the Kobalt right angle 3/8 drive impact wrench. My Lowes had it on a buy more, get more promo. Couldn't turn it down. It fits nicely between my 1/4 and 1/2 impacts.

Thanks a millionxbillion. I bought the Kobalt for $99.00 during the Lowes's sale. I already had the battery and the charger. My only complain is that it's difficult to get in the engine area.
