Is The Blue Lagoon Safe To Visit?

The Blue Lagoon announced that they would re-open their doors on January 20th in a statement on their website. This just weeks after a series of earthquakes and a volcanic eruption pretty much destroyed the town of Grindavík just 2 miles away from the Blue Lagoon.
But is it safe to visit?

An eruption did happen and it played out pretty much exactly how I predicted in the video. The Blue Lagoon is there fore closed for the time being. I predict the re-open just before the start of the next eruption. As usual.

I’ve been to the Blue Lagoon Iceland with my family - it’s fun. Having said that lava coming up from an unseen dike below won’t give any warning (unlike surface lava flow) - the water will boil in seconds… 😅😂

Thanks for the update. I'd pass on the Blue Lagoon, even without the earthquakes. Prefer something less crowded. Feel sorry for the displaced residents of Grindavík and to hear someone did die there.

To be fair, its less crowded these days 😅 but yea I agree. Not my first choice. It was truly sad that someone lost their life trying to fill in these bottomless pits. 😢

My concern is whether any disruption of the Svartsengi power plant might shut down the airport. We are returning to Iceland 17 March.

I'm curious if a lot of Grindavik residents work at the Blue Lagoon and Svartsengi?

Yes, it's quite a big workplace (800+ employees) and many of the employees are from Grindavík.

I would bet that most tourists to Iceland go to see (at least) the Blue Lagoon so I'm wondering if there is any pressure from the government and businesses to re-open it in spite of potential safety concerns.

Money is definitely a factor. This is a big place of employment. I could imagine The pressure is from the lagoon and the government might feel pressure to comply?

Volunteer lobsters. Get boiled alive! Doesn't everyone want to become a Ball Park frank? Wade in the Blue Lagoon, it's the hottest tourist attraction in Iceland!

We liked Sky Lagoon better but honestly spent more time in the cheap city pools. For a date night I suppose Sky would be the choice over the city pool. You are much more likely to die in a car crash going to and from the Blue Lagoon according to some guys video I saw on KZbin earlier this year than from lava.

Tbf there are plenty of other lagoons. Just not covered in lava. Suppose that should have been a clue. 🤔
