@@Moriarty2007 I don't think blackmagic could make money on a 2.7k $600 camera. canon and sony have much larger volume of sales, so they can get away with $600 cameras. however blackmagic is still a smaller company. even the original blackmagic pocket was $999. and chip shortages+ inflation have pushed up prices up (would likely be $1200 today). Edit: the cost saving between a 2.7k super 16mm and 4k m43 sensor are likely less than $100. so it would more like a $1300 pocket 4k, or a $1200 super 16mm. Hahaha!!! I love it. Good thing I watched till the end because I was going to disagree with you. But I saw what you did. So I'm going with "It's NOT a waste". The new Arri Alexa 35 shoots ONLY 4.6K. And that's because Netflix FORCED them to raise the resolution, or else they would've kept it at 3K. According to Arri, they didn't see the need to go to 8K or 12K because most of the Hollywood Cinematographers feel 6-12K is not necessary(their words not mine). As long as it had latitude, it could be 2K they didn't care. So to me this camera is not a waste of money, especially if you're shooting indie films. Hell, I still use the original Ursa today in 2022 and my clients LOVE IT. It's not the camera is what you do with it. Nonetheless, I LOVED your argument. I enjoyed the video Cheers.

I'm definitely in the camp of dynamic range over resolution. I feel 4K is a sweet spot with anything bigger having diminishing returns - particularly if you are shooting uncompressed raw like Alexa does and have to deal with all that data.

Great video! I love my Pocket 4K and yes - it has it's flaws. You mentioned them all and it was good, honest review. But there is one thing more: color science. Blackmagic Pocket 4K has unique color science that makes your image look EXPENSIVE, Hollywood style. This one thing is worth to consider before purchase. I started filming two years ago. Last week my documentary was shown on (legit, 22-year history) film festival. Each scene was shot with that camera. I don't know if it was Blackmagic or maybe I am a fast learner. But without that camera it wouldn't be possible :) Not a waste of money for me. But it can be for someone else. Cheers!

Truth is: Sensor size has NOTHING do do with low light ability. Only Pixel size counts Pocket 4k sensor: 4096 x 2160 (resolution) / 18.96mm x 10mm (size) = 0.0046~ Pocket 6k sensor: 6144 x 3456 (resolution) / 23.10mm x 12.99mm (size) =0.0037~ So in fact BMPCC4K has physicaly bigger pixels and so, able to catch more light. This was my reason to get the 4K
@mikafoxx2717
@mikafoxx2717 11 ай бұрын
Only if you crop in to 100% on them.. but usually you just show it at the same screen size, which means more higher noise pixels average out into, in the case of a 2k projection, quarter the pixels and quarter the noise. It makes no difference once it gets scaled and you have extra resolution as a benefit for those that can take advantage of it. File size and video processing should be your main concern.

Micro 4/3 is not a problem. When your shorting a dark scene you just need more lights. It's more important to light the scene. Too many people are always worrying about cranking up iso. Filmmakers are rediculously spoiled nowadays. No one needs anything over 800 if the light it correctly and ideally you can make pretty much anything at 200-500 iso. Pro dps still shoot between 2-800 iso on big feature films. Only rare circumstances is it even higher. Back in the day people where shooting on 0.50 iso film with night scenes and it looked great because they lite it properly. I'd only use a high iso if I'm looking for a particular look to create more digital grain naturally from the camera or to raise my blacks higher so there harder to crush in post to remain Grey. M43 can do all of these anyway. I shot open gate on my gx85 M43 and I love it because it is so versatile with lenses which is far more important.
@ChristopherMichaelLaw
@ChristopherMichaelLaw 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you about lighting but these cameras are targeted at budget film makers who maybe don't have the resources to have a big lighting kit. That's when the low light capabilities are very useful. The trend in the industry, big or small, is smaller lighting packages. Even Arri recognise this with the new Alexa 35 having an enhanced low light mode.
@justinwking
@justinwking 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChristopherMichaelLaw my bmpcc4k shoots 3200 native... It doesn't take a lot to light 3200 iso... ND filters are more of an issue with budget filmmaking, because budget filmmakers are probably more likely to rely on natural light, and getting depth of field with natural daylight and regular shutter speeds requires ND.

@3:57: The BMPCC 4K sensor is "only half the size of a full-frame sensor... That means that in low-light situations, you're going to have to increase your ISO." Wrong on both counts. An MFT sensor has only one-quarter the area of a full-frame sensor, but that doesn't mean you have to increase its ISO setting to compensate. Exposure settings on different cameras work the same way, regardless of how large the sensor may be.

Thank you for mentioning the 6k/8k post-processing cost. Very few people mention how expensive it can be to edit/store high-res footage. I got the bmpcc 4k when it came out because I knew it would still be relevant 3-4 years later and more, and that by then I would have a more robust system to handle the footage. Plus, as an indie filmmaker, if you want to distribute your film, the majority of distributors accept the 1080p format anyway in 2023.😏 It's a great camera.

I have a Samyang 16mm cine-lens as my widest lens without noticeable distortion. I've got great shots with it. Using a Metabones XL on the P4K with only a 1.1 crop is going to be emancipating.

I just picked up a 2nd hand pocket 4k in mid October 😋. My needs are 4k 50 frames or more, decent pro video codec that doesn't macroblock in high frame rates 10bit 422 and raw, audio in, headphones, possibly shoot long live events to Apple prores LT in HD and 4k, raw video for occasional drama/horror films, i would have also liked SDi out but full size Hdmi will do. USB c recording is a bonus, selling my ef to nex speedbooster to get a m43rds booster, I already have many sony NPF batteries and plate to 12v, I had to buy the DC cable to run external power, I already have many EF, MD, OM (old), M42 lenses, I do have to buy more Sdxc 170MB cards and external SSD. Not as good in low light as my old Sony a6300 ( clean at 15,000 iso) from my first quick filming tests my medium spec pc can easily handle raw and can also handle prores422 HQ. My choice was between BMPCC4k, Z cam E2 4k, I was leaning towards the Zcam because it runs off Sony NPF, but the pocket appeared in a Local CEX store for £770 and I had to grab it😇

I love my BMPCC4K. Although, I have experienced some issues mainly regarding gimbals. Due to the size of the Cine 4K, I’ve had to sell my Ronin-M and go for a gimbal that has a larger cradle and I’ve made a bit of a loss. Also, due to how the screen is covered by the VMount battery when it’s rigged up I’m saving up money to purchase a monitor that can control the settings of the camera in the same nature as the native screen which is NOT at all cheap by any means. Whoever is looking to purchase this camera, please be aware that it will come at a cost to build it in a way where the system is quick and efficient, but honestly the rigging journey and tinkering to find the solution best suited to your needs is incredibly worth it. From rigging, to shooting, to editing in BRAW and LOG I can genuinely say the pay off is something I would like all budget film makers and price to performance enthusiast to experience.

Unfortunately, full frame cameras will not drop in price. Current data show just the opposite trend - in order to accomodate for declining sales, producers are successively raising prices and cutting functionality in lower tiers.

It's an excellent camera if you understand its strengths and are willing to deal with its weaknesses. This is not a "run and gun" video camera. There's no IBIS, and the autofocus is basically useless. The battery life is awful. It's not useful for still photography. This is a cinema camera designed to be used on a movie set, probably in a rig and/or on a tripod at all times. You will need to use manual focus. To get the most out of the camera, shoot Blackmagic RAW. So, if that's what you want in a camera, then this one can give you a beautiful image. For me, it's not what I want. I want a run-and-gun, hybrid photo / video camera.

@ChristopherMichaelLaw
@ChristopherMichaelLaw Жыл бұрын
@@thammerhammer3543 Well they are all good. Depends how much experience you have. If you're running around following people for your documentary then maybe something like the a7 iv with its auto focus would be useful. If you're after pure picture quality then the 4K or 6K. Remember cameras don't get worse over time, new ones may get better, but if you like the image from the 4k it will still look that way in the future.

I am still holding my sony a6300 and guys, that is a 6k low light beast....It´s not prores, but when you grade you scenes decently onset, there´s almost no need to push curves on color grading. Besides, it´s saving me a ton of hard drive using less bitrate. And it does great with sigma lenses and is a great photographic camera....24MP. I really enjoyed this video. I have been looking at the 4k and 6k pro. Never got into video but looks fun just as a hobby. The last camera I bought was a nikon d70 to take macro shots of my saltwater aquarium (which even less than a year old I managed to get for 500.00). Data storage is probably one of the best arguments. Data hording gets expensive. I have a 20 tb server now and its almost full. (although easy enough to expand but that still costs a lot). Hey Great Video and Channel, I thinking for beginners the way to go nowdays is GH5 in Combo with BMPCC4K and buy used gear as well as vintage and Chinese TT artisan,Zhonghij speedmaster very fast lens. I learn a lot about composition,framing focus pull WB etc...because I had everything Manual. As well for people shooting Multicam like myself of concert or event. My Blackmagic are the tripod camera and GH5 are my run and gun handheld with cine lens shooting style... The paper list is imho the best way to go...and I agree for wide shoot my S5 FF is maybe better but I did not try the new Panasonic Leica 9mm 1.7 f...which should be great. And I don't agree with you about full frame look MFT is really close to it with lens like T1 Speedmaster Zhongghie 17,25,35 mm Wich is equivalent of 34,50,70mm in MFT depending of the camera you use (GH5 sensor is true MFT crop 2 BMPCC is slightly different 1.85 if I remember) But yes FF look is easier to achieve with FF cameras and lens but you can trick an MFT camera to look like that to a certain point... Yours Fil

The only issue with my copy is that the HDMI out got fried by a faulty cable, so I have to use an eyepiece that fits onto the LCD. Overall not bad. I just used it to pick up some inserts for a film that I shot on the URSA mini pro G2.

4K rolling shutter is not too bad, especially if you use an aspect ratio crop. But I agree a 4K g2 or Pro would be cool. I think the fx3 and Alexa 35 prove it’s not all about resolution and plenty of people would like a 4K camera with other improvements.

Anyone who complains about available light doesn't know how to light a scene properly. If you look at the sets that are set up in terms of lighting in Holywood movies even the night scenes have a ridiculous amount of lighting.... People who say it's about available light never learned how to use lighting properly.
@ChristopherMichaelLaw
@ChristopherMichaelLaw 2 жыл бұрын
I take your point but there are other possibilities too. Maybe they don't have access to a great lighting package. Plenty of directors and cinematographers have made their first films with only available light. Lots of lights mean lots of crew - not always possible with limited budgets. 8K? 12K? Its hard enough to find 4K content aside from KZbin. Hardly any 4K broadcasts ether and its been what? 10 years? 8K and 12K will never become the industry standard in our lifetime. No IBIS or AF kills it for me though. Even 8 year old Olympus M43 cameras have IBIS and AF and you can get them off eBay for pennies on the dollar basically. Depends how bad you want 4K 60

I guess it depends where you live. Most the sports channels in the UK are available in UHD, as well as a few entertainment and movie channels. Japan has 4K and even 8K broadcasts. Netflix has a big 4K library. There's other things to consider other than resolution too, bitrate, dynamic range, colour science, RAW recording.... there's more to the camera than just 4K 60p. It depends what content you want to make, AF may be essential or irrelevant.
