No, there was no stolen victory. Even assuming it was a blown call (it wasn't) that's football. Utah couldn't score in 3/4 quarters. They also scored off of a bad facemask call before the half. They had so many chances in the final quarter to put it away. Byu kept going basically 3 and out, and utah could not capitalize. They lost this game. They gave it away.

The point in the game should have nothing to do with a call. It was the correct call, a definition of DB holding. What other rules don't you want the officials to enforce? The official saw it and called it. Stop your whining Mark and Kyle. A most disappointing response from the Utah leadership.

That bothers me too, in all sports. “You can’t make that call at that point in the game” why?! What he did was illegal. If Mark is saying they stole it. Then go take back the 7 points on the touchdown on the facemask call with wasn't a facemask but his jersey he grab which happened on a 3rd and long that would have been BYU's only sack in the game which would have pushed them to about 4th and 15. In this rivalry game players do stuff at the end of the game which if you take it back to the beginning it has always been like that and he got caught him at the end doing something stupid. Then Mark made it worse by going on the field during the kickoff at the end of the game. All the Utes gave the game up at the end which they have been doing all season after the king went out for the season and they lost all hope at that point. Utes go back to the WAC!!!

I'm a retired referee. (This is long) 1. Holding was the right call. We had a saying I've heard at every level: If it's a penalty in the first minute, it's a penalty in the last minute, period. 2. The Utah player was smart to duck his head when his jersey was grabbed by the BYU player, selling it as a facemask when it wasn't. Kudos to the Ute. Poor call. Utah scored a touchdown after that blown call. 3. BYU stopped Utah in 3 of 4 quarters. Both teams have elite defenses. They use the same scheme. BYU's Defensive Coordinator used to be Utah's. Why didn't Utah stop BYU from kicking the field goal to win the game? 4. The bad attitude of the athletic director is all over the non-athlete population at Utah. And if Utah had scored on their last drive where they ended up throwing the laterals all over the field, it would have been nullified because their stupid athletic director had walked onto the field to yell at a referee while the play was live. WHILE THE PLAY WAS LIVE! That's what got them the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty 'on the bench' at the end of the game. Now to be a little personal: I went to BYU. My wife went to the 'U'. Because of everything that's gone on during our 47 years of marriage and her watching me referee High School football (even turning down an offer to referee college football because I had young children I didn't want to leave every weekend) that she has switched loyalties from Utah to BYU. Yes, there are jerks that go to BYU and cheer for them. But far fewer than go to the University of Utah. I've dealt with both fan bases for years and I can tell you the Utah fan base is a lot rougher around the edges than the BYU fan base. And like everything else in life, there are exceptions. I used to work with a guy who hated the Mormon church yet cheered for BYU and had season tickets to football. Maybe he still does. I've lost track. In any case, Utah gave the game to BYU. But BYU still had to take it. They won fairly and are the better team. This year. Will Utah come back and be better next year? Not with this AD. He needs to find something else to do.

There was no stolen victory. Get real! A hold is a hold. Tapes were reviewed and several holding calls committed by the Utes were not called. Reminds of basketball where people complain about a late foul call and always say let the players determine the game😮 B.S. Dude clearly committed a hold in an attempt to not get beat by the receiver. The Big 12 needs to learn about Utahs programs. They do nothing but complain at every turn. There A.D. should be canned so the program can go in a better direction. They played in a weak conference and now, after losing 5 in a row in a real conference are losing it. Welcome to the Big 12 Utes. Leave if your unhappy. The WAC is calling😅

Utah has been the replacement team for Big 12ers to hate on this football season now that Texas and OU are gone. Mark Harlan was upset about the game. He would have been smart to take an hour or two to cool down prior to making any kind of statement. In all fairness to him, I think we all have said something or done something during the heat of the moment that we have later regretted. Rivalry games often bring out the worst in people, whether it be a game like Michigan-Ohio State, Alabama-Auburn, or Texas-OU. I believe that vloggers are compounding the issues with these kinds of threads. This only causes more hard feelings.

The PAC 12 is no longer a power conference and if it were ever rebuilt and Utah joined them, they would be joining a group of 6 conference. The truth of the matter is is that Utah isn't as good as they think they are. The only other power conference they may have a chance in joining is the ACC, but even that conference may be losing its power status. So where would that mean for Utah? B1G and SEC won't take them because their media market is worthless to those conferences, so that leaves the Big 12. I'm perfectly ok with Utah leaving the conference. And it starts up again...BYU didn't really win the game, and snuck their way into the Big-12 Championship; just like they really didn't win the 1984 National Championship because there was no playoff system. It never ceases to amaze me how some in sports media try to find SOMETHING to denigrate and dismiss BYU's accomplishments. 1) Sitake's time-out call was in time. 2) The holding call was a legitimate call, if you review the available video angles and the ref had the best angle. 3) The "facemask" penalty against BYU was NOT a good call if you review the video. He had the top of his jersey and shoulder pads. 4) The Utah AD was on the field while play was going on. The Commissioner should also ban him for 5 years from being on the sideline. You along with many other sports pundits have begun to sow your seeds of doubt regarding BYU's accomplishments. However, their record speaks, very loudly, for itself. Why not just give credit where credit is due, or are you too steeped in Baylor green and gold?

My suggestion to any Big 12 team is to play each game towards building up a Margin of Safety so that when the last quarter of the game starts that their team can more easily obtain victory (despite any last minute tough calls) because they did their job during the first 3/4 of the game to dominate their opponent. What Utah forgot to do was score some more points during the 2nd half. The W-L record of teams that don't score any points in the second half of a game is abysmal. So, even when you build up that Margin of Safety then don't forget to keep on scoring & working hard to keep the other team from scoring points.

The problem with the attitude of you can't make that call in that situation is that when you do, you run into what happened on the 2 point conversion in the Bengals and Ravens game. 3 facemasks grabbed, 1 defensive holding and what looked like a pass interference on the intended receiver all on one play, but not a single flag thrown. Those arguing not to let the officials decide the game with a flag are also the same screaming at a play like that, of how can you not call it.

Since when is a penalty a penalty based on when it occurs, it's still a penalty in the 4th qtr as it is in the first qtr, the call is good or bad based on your allegiance to the teams playing, in the second qtr of this game BYU was called for face masking call that kept a drive going for Utah which they then scored a touchdown. instant replay showed there was no face masking but in real time I thought it looked like a face masking and I understand why it was called, again Utah lost this game by getting only 79 yards of total offense and 4 first downs in the second half and not stopping BYU from scoring enough points to win this game.

Ok let's get something straight. Many of my colleagues in media regardless of the sport have this fixation with a myth that the rules of a game do not apply from the beginning to the end. I often wonder how many of you have ever taken a physics or math class because you seem to think there is this magic moment when rules no longer apply. 1. The call was clear. Neither the Time Out or the flag were late. You are NOT smarter or more experienced than over a dozen long-time professional officials including 3x Superbowl Veteran and Dir of media officiating analysts for NBC Sports Terry McAulay who all said it's a clear penalty. You might not love the call but what does reality and time frame have to do with that. I am fairly certain that Baylor teaches natural law. As such... 2. You cannot go skydiving at 10,000 ft and free fall 9,000 ft, pull the rip chord, discover your chute is tangled and while plummeting to your death say, "Wait God you can't make that call in this moment, it's not fair, and I should get a (splat)." Natural law is God's way of teaching us that rules and laws apply in life 100% of the time. Law must be enforced at the kickoff and until the end. When you don't enforce the law like that, a so-called superstar like Michael Jordan is allowed to push off on Byron Russell in two game six events in two separate NBA finals and sink the winning shots without an offensive foul making the Chicago Bulls the champions twice and the Utah Jazz forever #2, twice. Everyone on the planet knew Jordon had gotten away with that not once, but twice in his NBA career. We'll never know if Chicago would have won both games sevens because the officials decided the rules of the game did not apply at that moment as time ran out. But the LAW says the Bulls should have been required to win according to rules enforced from beginning to end. Both times Jordon committed egregious offensive fouls. As a basketball analyst (USBWA) I stopped watching and caring about the NBA the second time that happened. Your attitude about rules is lazy fare. That cannot be how gamesmanship or professionalism works. To be a member of the media and take the pathetic whining Rick Nuheisel approach to that call is simply bad form for professional media. It's not that you argued the official made an error. It's that you argued the official should have not flagged the penalty. You have lost credibility by not admitting in the first moment that the call was legitimate. L. E Deaux FWAA 1982-Present

As a cougar fan, I've known Utah has a side of their culture that is difficult for us to deal with but their words and behaviors the last year or two have been shocking. The Utah brand has been driven into the mud and the program has become the heel of college football. Petty, reactive and entitled.

I can't comment on the Utah/BYU game specifically, but this happens in every conference and more as it gets to the end of the season. Conferences don't want their big money schools losing to a lesser school in the conference. It is bad for business.

I would love to know what had gone on before that play that influenced the ref to throw that flag. The Utah defense is known for getting up in bump cover and really making it hard for recievers to get off the line. I love it! They get up into it and blitz hard and just see if you can beat them. It's an aggressive and fun type of defensive football. At the same time, you're gonna have times where guys are bumping too far down the field or get their hands on a jersey longer than the rules allow. Watch video of Utah and it happens all the time. If it were possible, I'd be very curious to hear what led up to that call. Had the ref had conversations with the player warning, hey, watch your hands when you're the reciever is getting down field, etc.? Refs don't call everything that happens on the field often they are managing the situations the best they can through conversation and warning. There is far more management talk that goes on during the game than any of us know unless we're on the field. I don't know, but I'm curious if there was more that led up to the call being made.

I was at the game an honestly despite my hatred for BYU it was an unbelievable game from both teams. I have had season tickets for a decade and i have never heard the stadium that loud. From someone who witnessed it in person Utah stuffed them over and over. BYU had 1 timeout at that point, somehow they called timeout after the snap and for some reason wasn't charged a time out. Next play Utah D stuffs them for a safety or so we thought. D holding on the outside wirhin 5 yds completely outside of the play is very sus. The reality is BYU (despite my hatred for them) is the Big 12 s only chance at a CFP playofff spot. From this fans perspective not a single team in the Big 12 deserves an invite. So be fans and support your team but we should all be hoping our schools put better product out there.

It seems to me that from time to time refs make questionable calls or miss calls that help the higher ranked team win. the reason is money. Penn State will get a lot of money for their conference if they make the playoffs. In the OT vs USC the refs missed a DPI and a Defensive holding and Penn state won. Vs Washington they missed two DPI by Penn state and two holding calls on their offense that helped them get two TD's. In that game it did not matter as Penn State completely dominated Washington but the USC game that is a different story

Utah fan here. First let me say i'm learning teams in the Big 12 so give me some slack. That said I think the Big 12 has greatly underestimated the teams coming out of the the PAC 12 (oregon). From my perspective the Big 12 as a whole is weak. The games are entertaining but only because the sub pat football (including my boys). At the end of the day there is no team in the Big 12 that stands a chance against the real power 5 teams. Lastly, if you are a football fan and you think that call was a good one you need to check yourself. If this happened to Baylor you all would feel the same way. And please do NOT pretend you understand the rivaley between these two schools unless you are from here. I dont care what game it is, No game should be decided by the ref on some ticky tacky BS call. I look forward to future games with Baylor and their incredible fans.

The majority around the country disagree with you on the call. I haven't heard one person say that wasn't holding. They might disagree whether or not you call it in that situation, but no one thinks it wasn't holding. You have the current rules analyst for Sunday Night Football (former NFL Ref) saying it's a textbook hold every time and in every situation. It's a weird thing to say that the Big 12 has underestimated the PAC 12 schools. I think maybe your team underestimated the Big 12. This is a more physical league than the PAC 12. A mediocre BYU team went 5-0 against your vaunted PAC 12 in '21. Everyone knows the SEC and Big 10 are better, but we don't crap where we eat and crap all over our conferencemates.

@@RVcoug Exactly and spot on! The PAC12 was the weakest of the 5 conferences. It's curious why Utah would leave such a "prestigious" conference as the Pac12 in the first place? They should have just stayed there and been the darlings of the Pac12 for generations to come. 😂

The Big 12 probably wishes it was basketball season. Because, nobody is taking your football prowess football seriously. The Big 12 is still flyover country for the SEC and Big 10. But, distress not because you do have tougher than nails wrestling programs that are fun to watch and to be taken very serious.

This win had nothing to do with a Big12 team making the playoffs. Regardless of record or ranking, whoever wins the Big12 will be in the playoffs. Sorry, not sorry, for your delusion pain. "The 12 participating teams will be the five conference champions ranked highest by the CFP selection committee, plus the next seven highest-ranked teams." "The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and will receive a first-round bye. The fifth conference champion will be seeded where it was ranked or at No. 12 if it is outside the top 12 rankings. Non-conference champions ranked in the top four will be seeded beginning at No. 5. Because of this, the seeding, 1 through 12, could look different than the final rankings."

You can sugarcoat it any way you want, but if that penalty isn't called while Ratzleff is getting sacked, Utah wins the game. It's that simple. It's one of those moments in a game that completely determines the outcome. BYU was out of TOs and Utah would just have had to kneel a couple of times to end the game. So, it's pretty disingenous to trot out all of the other factors/details when, in reality, the game was over the moment that a tentative change of possession took place.
