I played a concert grand C. Bechstein once in a piano store many years ago.. I’ve never forgotten the experience. The bass was superb, the sound was unlike anything I’d ever heard from Steinway, Fazioli or even Bosendorfer. If I ever strike it rich, a Bechstein will be my choice! And this video just brings back all that emotion from hearing such an exemplarily instrument in person!

The tone is very jazzy but at the same time very hotel-lobby music warmish...love it !! I think one of the best sounding pianos you've ever featured in this class !

I love the C.Bechstein sound! I should drive to this Kim's piano store. It's only 58 miles from my home. Great review!

The best is always subjective but this is a superb piano. Fazioli will compete as well and Bosendorfer VC, in my opinion. The treble sparkles, depth of tone, clarity, character, it's all there.

I definitely can hear the wonderful quality of this piano. I'm still sticking with Bosendorfer as my favorite but C. Bechstein could come in as a really close second. Also, you played your test piece so nicely on it. It must be very empowering.

Yes fab. The bass has bite and treble has the typical Bechstein tone quality I think has been best described as translucent. I encourage everyone to try a Bechstein if haven’t had a chance. They are the choice of many great musicians. I feel they often have quite even but distinct and beautiful voices bass, tenor, alto, soprano where the Steinways have the one impressive tone quality all the way through. Happy to hear others thoughts though.

Wow what an amazing balance of tone. Reminds me of the Yamaha S7X you previously played on. Too bad about Claire de lune copyright strikes. The bass test piece I love to play on a new piano is always Chopin Nocturne #13 in C Minor op.48 no.1. Give it a listen. I'd love to hear that on some of the 7ft plus pianos you try. Keep up the great work!

Great and informative review James! Would it be possible to review some more obscure or older brands of pianos? I'm sure you will be surprised by some of the 1800s-1900s brands built by smaller European builders.

Finally you played a Bechstein!!! Just consider that the so called "big four" are considered to be Steinway, Bechstein, Bosendorfer and Bluthner ... the crystalline tone of a Bechstein is unique.

James, a great review of the Bechstein B. This instrument is fantastically ALIVE ! It's the only word I can use to describe what I hear. The sustain is awesome. Seems a bit bright for a European piano. And I mean that in a good way. How do you have it miked for this presentation? And the hard wood floor may add to the brightness. The bench: Is this a Bechstein product or is it a Jansen. Or what? Please send the bench manufacturer. Your walk-around failed to mention the extra thickness of the rim. Seems very thick for a piano under 7'. Please send this retailer's internet address. I'm waiting for your review of Bechstein concert grand.

The brightness is typical of Bechstein, you definitely have to try one because it's the only manufacturer that can really compete with Steinway on a stage. It's far from being a "standard" european tone. Here in Italy you can find so many that I had the occasion to try different B212 from different era. This clear crystal tone it's typical of the brand and has nothing to share with other european or other german grands. Maybe just a Feurich made in Leipzig before 1981 (a real Feurich, not the Hailun made current ones) could have a comparable tone, but still Bechstein is recognizable over the others for brightness, sharp dampening, deep basses, clear attack, long sustain. They are usually equipped with Renner action (some elder ones could have an original Schwander which is actually the same model, different manufacturer) and they always have a very carefully projected key length proportion and the action feels sturdy and precise. I also played some very worn ones, still having the Bechstein character, it seems they are really appreciated by professionals in their own personal studios.

The treble has a warm clarity almost crystalline without the cold brittle aspect. The tenor and bass rich warm and deep. A Yamaha by comparison seems shallow and brittle. Steinway doesn’t have the depth and warmth of bass and the Steinway bass seems sterile lacking character. Is the C Bechstein plate wet sand cast? The warm character it possesses makes me think perhaps. Anyway. Great review wish you could have played some more on that wonderful piano. Thank you.

Geez. How are you gonna beat that with a digital piano. That's as good as they come. Feels like each tone has a 'depth' to it, as in you can do more with the tone. Hope that makes sense, hard to explain. How much goes this masterpiece go for?

I dont think we can compare any digital piano with a real one. One has speakers the other has real strings. Speakers will never sound and vibrate the same as real strings. Not to mention that there are missing sound frequencies with a digital speaker. But to me the biggest difference is that at a real piano you can "feel" the sound. A digital can sound beautiful but you will not hav the same feeling as with a real piano. P.s.- I think one can test this out on a hybrid piano. (If there's any WITH real string)

If money were no object... And space as well. It does sound wonderful. I could imagine hearing anything from classical to cocktail music on it. I'm a little curious about the copyright issues with Clair de Lune. AFAIK, Debussey wrote it for piano, so it shouldn't be an arrangement copyright, and I'm sure he's not complaining.
